The Gila Wilderness offers earth friendly lodging
Earth Day makes me think of places like the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico.  It's a perfect spot for an environmentally friendly hiking/primitive camping trip combo. It also offers non-fussy adventure in the midst of beauty.
My trip to the Gila National Forest, where the wilderness is located, was the most environmentally friendly one I've ever been on-except for two years in the Peace Corps in The Gambia, West Africa, … (0 comments)

hiking: Gomez Peak Trail near Silver City, NM - 04/20/10 12:31 PM
Gomez Peak is about five minutes north of Silver City. It climbs to 7,238 feet above sea level.
This hike is a demanding with vertical challenges a large part of the way. Whenever you come to another trail leading upwards, either on your left or right, take it and your reward will be a 360 degree view of the Gila Wilderness, the desert and mountain ranges clear to the Mexican border and virtually the entire town of Silver City, along with the Kneeling Nun and a good view of the Black Range to the East. Depending on your sightseeing needs, this can be a … (0 comments)

hiking: The Gila Cliff Dwellings - Silver City, NM 88061 - 04/12/10 11:05 AM
The Gila Cliff Dwellings are located 44 miles north of Silver City in the Gila (Hee-la) National Forest. You travel up Highway 15 through a beautiful pine forest with sweeping views.
The Mogollon Indians lived here over 700 years ago. You can actually enter the dwellings, see where they lived, look into some of the structures from above, and explore the cave walls where petroglyphs can be seen. The dwellings were built into cave walls 180 feet above the river floor. You can see the smoke where they had fires, round areas in the floor where they placed their pots, the … (1 comments)

hiking: Hiking Etiquitte in Silver City, NM - 03/16/10 11:20 AM
I wanted to talk briefly about hiking etiquette. Hikers are really good out here but I figure that it's a good idea to talk about once in a while.
I like to feel like I'm the first one on the land I'm walking so I don't want to see a lot of evidence of other people - - like garbage, fire pits, etc. However, I don't want to go off trail either since that starts the breakdown of the wilderness (stepping on grasses and plants, occasional bushwhacking). That's why we're really careful to hike out everything we hiked in.
We tend … (1 comments)

hiking: Silver City Sites to Visit - The Catwalk - 08/19/09 11:21 AM
 August 19, 2009

CATWALK OF WHITEWATER CANYON
The Catwalk is a trail that winds up Whitewater Canyon often hanging over the rushing water with metal walkways. It is a stunning spot to enjoy the ruggedness of nature as you walk up through high rock walls, rushing waters, tall trees and such. Toward the end of the Catwalk is a extension bridge that wobbles and sways over the river. The trail continues up past the rivine for those so inclined.

hiking: Arrastra near Silver City - what's an Arrastra? - 08/17/09 11:43 AM
August 17, 2009
This week-end I hiked up near the "Arrastra" Site just north of Pinos Altos.

Arrastra: rock-lined ore-grinding pit.  This is one of some 75 arrastras that the miners built in the Pinos Altos vicinity; it offers an insight into the hardship that prospectors would endure in their compulsive pursuit of gold.
Powered by a mule or a horse, "Large dragstones were pulled over a mixture of crushed ore and water," according to the U. S. Forest Service marker at the arrastra site.  Once a heavy mud formed, the operator added mercury [which, in concentration, can cause severe … (2 comments)

hiking: Silver City author, Dutch Salmon - 06/03/09 12:56 PM
Dutch Salmon is a local outdoorsman / author. He is the author of seven outdoor books including "Gila Descending", "Country Sports", and the novel "Home is the River". I recommend reading any and all of them; they're great reads. I especially enjoyed "Gila Descending" where he tells the true story of his travels with his pets on the Gila River. He helped me to see the hunter in a new light when he explained his hunting philosophy in that book. Another enjoyable read is "Country Sports" which is a compilation of his Newspaper articles. Informative, amusing, good stuff.  He and his … (1 comments)

hiking: An enjoyable week-end in Silver City, NM - 06/01/09 03:29 PM
June 1, 2009
I certainly had one of the nicest week-ends in a long time. Went to the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning where I ran in to 4 people I knew, noticed that the market is ever expanding in product and diversity, and bought a rocking pumpkin and dark chocolate muffin.
Then I went out to a friend's house where they showed me their "Hydroponic Green House". They are growing tomatoes, squash and strawberries using the Hydroponic method. Their plants are huge and already producing tomatoes. They use the water drip system to feed the plants 6 times a day … (1 comments)

hiking: The Mimbres Valley - near Silver City, NM - 05/11/09 04:31 PM
May 11, 2009
This week-end I was camping in the Mimbres Valley on John Fowler's ranch. It borders the Gila (Hee-la) National Forest and is beautiful with many canyons, trees, cattle and I believe that was an owl that kept me awake Friday night. Here are a few photos of the surroundings.

This photo was taken up on a  ridge on Fowler Ranch in the Mimbres Valley near Silver City, New Mexico.
If you look between the mountains, you can see a lot of green growth, These are Cottonwood Trees near the Mimbres River.

hiking: Walked some land on Tuesday evening - 04/24/09 12:49 PM

I walked a beautiful 10 acre parcel the other evening. It had some dams with made man-made ponds. We saw several rock formations, 4 deer and a group of Javalina (wild boar). The pond has a variety of birds and fish. And a nice stand of cat tails (reeds).
I thought you night enjoy seeing views of New Mexico that most people are surprised to see here. Namely water, greenery and pine trees!

This photo was taken in April 2009. I can only imagine the locale once it greens up in the next month or … (1 comments)

hiking: Cleveland Mine Rd. Hike in Silver City, NM - 03/06/09 04:43 PM
March 6, 2009
Happy 1st Birthday to my great-nephew Kevin!
Today we are having some cloud cover and it's a great day to hike in the woods. In the mountains behind my house, there is an old dirt road that was used to bring the ore from Cleveland Mine to town. This is an nice, easy hike that is close to town, yet rarely has anyone on it. So when I don't have a ton of time, it's good way to get out.

When I do have some time, like this morning, my girl friend Lynn and I take this … (1 comments)
