Altadena Community Resource Guide - 05/29/08 09:41 PM
As some of you may be aware, I'm one of the Directors of the Christmas Tree Lane Association.  We are constantly trying to find volunteers to help work on "The Lane" so that we can keep it from going dark in the coming years. Without community/volunteer help, Christmas Tree Lane would not survive.
Jason Tajima, of the County of Los Angeles, helps to put together the Altadena Community Resource Guide. If you've ever wondered what Altadena is all about...it's in there.  The link for the guide is: http://ceo.lacounty.gov/OUAS/pdf/Community%20Connection/08/Altadena%2008%20Eng.pdf It may take a minute to download it, but, it's so worth the … (1 comments)

Pasadena / Altadena School Scores - So Sad - 05/23/08 09:42 PM

According to results released Wednesday for the state's main method of measuring how individual schools are performing, John Muir High School and Altadena Elementary School (my alma maters) received the lowest possible ranking on the Academic Performance Index.
It was such a sad day to see this happen.  After all, I didn't turn out so bad. But, what a difference 30 years can make. Is it the upbringing of kids these days? Or maybe parents are so busy trying to make a living that they forget about their children's academics. Or maybe it's all the after school activities that … (1 comments)

Can You Find The Satellite Flying By? - 05/21/08 08:50 PM
Have you ever noticed any of the International Space Stations flying by in the sky?
I stumbled upon this website today and found it very interesting... http://spaceweather.com/flybys/
All you need to do is enter your zip code and you can find out when your best chances are for viewing. For instance, I'm in Altadena, California and it looks like I'll be able to check the skies in the west soutwest starting at 9:10pm tonight. There's supposed to be a super bright flyby if the International Space Station heading our way!

Who Will Win American Idol? - 05/20/08 08:58 PM
Tonight we get to see what David Cook and David Archuletta can dish out - head to head - vocal chords to vocal chords!!!!
I'm a singer so I really appreciate talent when I hear it.  At first I was a David Archuletta fan because David's voice was different and smooth. Then, out of the blue, comes David Cook. Though he's mostly a rocker, he can really sing anything - even Andrew Lloyd Webber! David Archuletta, I believe, needs a little more "pruning" and he's forgotten words many times over. But, David Cook has soared to success in my book and he's … (4 comments)

Identity Theft and Shame on Bank of America - 05/20/08 08:52 PM
It happened today. I was going through our credit accounts and updating records of accounts we hadn't used in a while.  One of them was a credit card with B of A. I wanted to verify our balance, credit limit and interest rate. When I called a person came on the line and said that the account was closed on May 15th - just 5 days ago.  AND NO ONE CALLED???? The person I spoke with said that someone had opened an account in my husband's name at a BofA in New Jersey in April and the first part of May … (7 comments)

We managed to get a parking space in the $10 lot at the Coliseum - but in the dirt. My poor black car. Ugh!!! Anyway, we proceeded to the check in … (0 comments)

Tax Relief for Owners of Foreclosed Homes or Are In a Workout Situation - 05/19/08 07:59 PM
For some of you, this may be old news. But, I'm quite surprised by how many Realtors are actually not aware of this. Unbelievable!! If you or anyone you know have lost their home to their lender, the IRS has some important information for them.
Although foreclosures and mortgage workouts can have tax consequences, there are special relief provisions that can eliminate or reduce the tax bites for financially strapped borrowers who lose their homes. This has to do with filling out Form 982 when the lender sends you a 1099 at the end of the year.
Go to http://www.irs.gov/irs/article/0,,id=179073,00.html for more information.

Saving Money on Veterinarian Bills - 05/19/08 04:02 PM
I just got back from the east coast. I stayed with my brother. His family has a little yorkshire terrier named Frankie. Frankie is the cutest and smartest little dog, but, he needs a lot of help. First, he needsto be groomed, his nails are so long he's walking on them. It's got to be painful. He's 2 years old and he hasn't been neutered and he's never had his teeth cleaned. My brother and his family are having financial difficulties and I offered to take Frankie off of their hands. My brother said it was ok, but, the rest of … (8 comments)

L.A. Revlon Run Walk Saturday May 10th - Join Me - 05/09/08 12:10 AM
In 1996, my mother, Nancy Lane, was diagnosed with breast cancer and ultimately had a mastectomy.  Fortunately, her cancer is now in remission..  My grandmother, Darutha, lost her life to cancer, as did my father, Bill Lane.  With the history of cancers in my family, I am committed to the fight against women's cancers.  On Saturday, May 10th, I will be participating in the 15th Annual Revlon Run/Walk For Women.  I have participated in this event since its inception. Over 50,000 are estimated to participate.
This year Melissa Manchester will be singing at the opening ceremonies. I'm not sure who's going to be singing in the Coliseum, though.  Last year it … (0 comments)

Altadena Market Overview - 05/05/08 07:43 PM

Altadena currently has about 210 residential properties that are listed for sale and in the escrow process. About 99% of those are in the form of single family houses. There are very few condo's or townhome properties in Altadena. Altadena also has close to 200 properties listed in foreclosure, with the majority of those located west of Fair Oaks Avenue.
I'm still here to help my hometown people sell their homes and to help people come to my hometown! It's absolutely beautiful. Lots of trees and you CAN touch the mountains!

Cinco de Mayo Pasadena DUI Check Point - 05/05/08 07:04 PM
The Pasadena Police Department will conduct a DUI Enforcement Check Point tonight between 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., said a spokesperson in a news statement. Of course, the location is under wraps...as it should be.
Clearly, the Pasadena Police Department's goal is to remove impaired drivers from our streets and this program has shown to be a proven and effective tool.
What I don't understand is that funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Shouldn't this just be part of their regular schedule for holiday or … (5 comments)

Mother's Day is Coming Up - What Will YOU Do For Her? - 05/05/08 12:41 AM
I always kind of run out of creative ideas of how to celebrate my Mother. This year I was thinking of trading her regular cable box for a DVR. She's 73 and doesn't get out much due to health reasons so she watches TV most of the day and gets upset when someone interrupts her during one of her favorite shows.
I was just curious - what will YOU be doing for (or getting) your Mom this year?

My Little Girl - 05/04/08 09:28 PM
I was not blessed with children of my own. Chloe was my little yorkie shih tzu mix doggy. Her birthday would have been this week so she was on my mind a lot for the past few days.  It saddens my heart that she disappeared 4 years ago after I had her for 16. She had a tendency to roam and 2 days after we moved into our new home that we built, she was gone. I searched and searched. Instead of coming home every day happy to be in a brand new home, I was heart broken.
But, I can now … (7 comments)

Open House in Pasadena - at JPL - 05/04/08 09:10 PM
Finally, after decades of saying I was some day going to visit JPL down the street from my home - I finally went.
It was a long, hot afternoon walking around JPL with my husband, Chris. I never knew how big the place was.
We went from visiting the Microdevices Laboratory (where engineers and scientists work in the world of the ultra-miniature), to the Journey of the Solar System, to Mars Exploration.  We really wanted to view the Journey to the Planets and Beyond video, but the line was almost 2 hours long. We figured we'll find it on the internet one day … (0 comments)

Eager Beaver Buyer Does a No No- Update! - 05/03/08 07:41 PM
Thank you all of you for your comments regarding what to do with the ruthless Realtor who tried to steal my client away from me...
I had decided NOT to do anything until hearing back about the offer we made on the home. Oh, and with the offer, I sent her a copy of the BBE.
Well, since making the offer on the REO property, and not yet hearing from the lender on any type of acceptance, my buyers found a home whose offer was accepted and the transaction with Ms. Ruthless Realtor was cancelled.  Now I don't have to worry about her … (6 comments)

Victor Wright 2nd Update! - 05/03/08 07:29 PM
I just got back from Victor's house.  Big difference from a week ago. The home is in the middle of being painted. The kitchen is almost complete. The bathroom is almost ready for light fixtures and a couple of new windows have been installed.  However, it still looks a bit strange with 2 white vinyl windows with panes and the rest are wood single hung windows painted in a brick color. Hmmmmmm. They are still contemplating whether they will be able to have enough funds available to replace the flooring in some of the rooms.  It would be a crying shame … (0 comments)

Helping to Fight Breast Cancer - 05/03/08 07:21 PM
I can't believe that it's been a whole year since the last Revlon Run Walk in Los Angeles.  It seems like just a couple of months ago.
Next Saturday, May 10th, I will be participating in the 15th Annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women at the Los Angeles Coleseum. I've participated every year and this year it seems that I've run out of time to obtain substantial sponsers like years past. I've never missed the walk, so I'm going to do my best to pass the word along.  For now all of you can go to www.Revlonrunwalk.com for more info.  I'll post again … (0 comments)

The "Rise of Slime" in our Oceans - 05/03/08 01:30 PM
My husband sent me the link to this article and it truly made me sad.  I hope that all people on this planet become aware of this situation.
It looks like there may be no solution to this crisis since it's sort of a catch 22, we need more oil, food and ways to dispose of sewage, I have no idea what the solution could be without economic disaster. Makes me think twice when just flushing the toilet.
I don't have any children, but what will happen to the generations to come?

Eager Beaver Buyer Does a No No - 05/01/08 01:06 AM
It happened to me today.  My eager buyer (Mr. Buyer) called the Listing Agent from the number on the "for sale" sign of a REO while he was "scouting the neighborhood". This is when the Buyer's Exclusive Representation Agreement comes in handy.  Not only did the Listing Agent not ask over the telephone Mr. Buyer if he already had an agent, but, after she drove 30 minutes to show the property and THEN asked if he had an agent and he replied, "yes", she still proceeded to tell him that it would be a good idea to go with her because "he'd … (13 comments)
