natural gas drilling: Gas Drilling in PA on the Upswing in 2010 - 01/11/10 08:24 AM
We in the Southern Tier/Central New York area have been painfully aware lately of the increased activity and controversy surrounding the Marcellus Shale Natural Gas drilling. In today's Ithaca Journal, a very stark picture unfolds, noting that in 2009, over 191 wells were drilled in PA, just south of us, and 787 permits were issued by that state's DEC. The most active counties are Susquehanna, Bradford and Tioga, and the wells have proven to be "fruitful" in some cases. However, the controversy rages on, as mishaps have also accrued on the score sheets of the gas companies behind the drilling initiatives.

The hydro-fracking process is now being demystified by a Cornell graduate student, Matt Cortese, of Binghamton. His power point presentation is available in PDF format, by linking to a featured article in the Ithaca Journal. Bravo Matt, and here's to the continued illumination of one of today's greatest environmental debates in the Central New York, and Fingerlakes Region.

The outcomes remain hotly debated from both sides of the table, with energy giants one one side, and landowners on the other. It's already messy in several other areas where drilling has begun and reports are now surfacing (and have been for a while) of drinking water wells becoming contaminated by the fracking process. For a great article in today's NY Times, click here. Local activists in the Fingerlakes are bringing much

natural gas drilling: Central New York Alert: Fortuna Energy Drilling in Your Backyard SOON! - 03/28/09 07:57 AM
Okay, time to unostrichize ourselves on the gas leasing that is rather quickly moving to the front burner with many landowners and activists in Central New York. We've heard about it for a some time now, and some people have actually walked away with money in their pockets from leasing their land to energy companies for gas and mineral extraction. What else though, is going on out here? The realities of what the outcomes are in some cases have had people hitting the roof, and with good reason. Here is a short list of some isses that have come up: Loss
