raleigh: Raleigh Among Fastest Growing Urban Areas - 03/28/12 02:16 PM
New U.S. Census Bureau data shows in the past decade, Raleigh’s population increased over 60 percent from 2000 to 2010, ranking N.C.’s capital the 21st fastest growing urban area in the country. The Raleigh area added more than 343,000 residents in the decade ending 2010, a 63.4 percent increase to nearly 885,000. The Bureau defines “urban areas” as "densely developed residential, commercial or other nonresidential areas.” The other NC urban city to make the list was Charlotte which came in at #1 for urban areas with 1 million or more residents with a population growth of 64.6 percent. In it's second annual report, Inman News recently published its list of the Top Real Estate Markets to Watch for 2012. At the top of the list: Raleigh, NC! To create this list, Inman News examined housing, economic and demographic data for metropolitan areas nationwide. Other factors included above-average price appreciation, a flourishing job market, a high rate of sales in proportion to population, a high level of home affordability, low foreclosure activity, a below-average share of distressed sales, a low vacancy rate, and other characteristics indicating a healthy housing market. In a recent study by 24/7 WallStreet, Raleigh was ranked the third Best Place to Raise a Family. Some of the factors used for the study included good schools, health care, and nearby recreational opportunities. According to a new ranking from American City Business Journals, Cary is the smartest city in North Carolina and the seventh smartest community in the country. The study was conducted by ACBJ using U.S. Census data and a five-part formula to rate the brainpower of 269 communities across America. This just in from the State of North Carolina, Department of Transportation: TURNPIKE AUTHORITY ELIMINATES ROUTES IN TRIANGLE EXPRESSWAY SOUTHEAST EXTENSION STUDY Nov. 4, 2010: RALEIGH--The N.C. Turnpike Authority today announced that three routes being studied for the Southeast Extension project have been eliminated from further consideration. These routes, known as the Blue, Purple and Yellow Corridors will no longer be considered potential routes for the project. They are being eliminated because of high impacts to neighborhoods, community resources, and the natural environment, and because of public input. Forbes just released its 12th annual ranking of the Best Places for Business and Careers and Raleigh made the list at #3! Being the first East Coast city on this years list, Raleigh ranked higher than the three other North Carolina cities to make the list: Charlotte (#17), Asheville (#21) and Durham (#23). Raleigh was ranked #1 on last year's list, but fell to #3 this year. Incomes fell 5.9% and unemployment averaged 8.6% for the year, compared with 4.9% in 2008. Portfolio.com just released its 2010 list of Best Places to Start a Small Business and Raleigh made the list at #3. Dropping only two places from its number #1 spot in 2009, Raleigh beat out other NC cities, such as Charlotte which dropped significantly from #2 in 2009 to #31 in 2010. The Milken Institute has released its list of the 2009 Best Performing Cities and both Durham and Raleigh-Cary made the Top 10! Durham is up from number 21 in 2008 to number 6 in 2009 while Raleigh-Cary dropped from number 2 in 2008 to number 10 in 2009.
