Superb new home, on 6+ acres, in an area of fine homes, and with a soaring panoramic vista. Still having fun doing my live radio show, on Salt Spring's community radio... - 03/28/12 11:15 AM

Am still enjoying presenting my live radio show on Salt Spring's community radio station. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 7 to 9 a.m., Pacific Time, (at 107.9 fm locally and via streaming audio at: cfsi-fm.com) you can catch the show. It's a mix of music, musings, & interviews with Islanders. Missed it for three weeks...when it gets busy in real estate, my days often begin early and so can't do the radio show. Future episodes, then, may be a bit more hit and miss for me, as my job takes precedence! The real estate market is picking up, and … (8 comments)

Welcoming Spring...with a poem! - 03/24/12 09:51 AM
Poem: Wind Licks Metal tongued Sculptures... Grace Point: Rain splintered, Fog shrouded, Whispers of Spring's return... It's in the wind, That smell of renewal. The season rolling Over, Tattered winter knitting Into Spring... We dwellers of the "wet coast" Recognize The shift when It comes... Slowly, A tippy toe Sliding Into sun, Wind sculptures Waving us slowly Into ourselves, Once more.... (LR)

In change lies opportunity...market uptick occuring! - 03/22/12 09:14 AM

Change...it's blowing in with the Spring wind! I think we may all agree (two years from now? The classic "look back" moment?) that the bottom-bottom in the market fell between October 2010 and October 2011...that "spread" depended on where one was located. I always think that the Pacific Northwest Coast is the tail of the dog...Florida might be the head and shakes first...we're the tail and two years later we wag! Maybe simplistic, but it's true that we are located on the edge of the continent, last to celebrate New Year's, and perhaps last to experience a market shift (up … (10 comments)

Pacific Northwest Coast dreaming of Spring...real Spring! - 03/22/12 08:59 AM

Spring! The calendar says so. This La Nina weather pattern has delivered most unusual weather events, globally. Our west coast region has been experiencing perpetual late Fall, it seems...rain, windstorms, unseasonably cool. Daylight Time is with us, it's now officially Spring, the light-filled evenings are a gift...gardens flowering, blossom trees shimmering, ocean smoothing from grey to blue...one of these days the sun will strengthen & dream us into summer....ahh...the ease of a season shifting gears. It's Spring. Enjoy!

Best buys are in undeveloped land? Call me! - 03/19/12 08:57 AM
Some of the best buys in this emerging market are found in undeveloped land options. In a downmarket, in a secondary home marketplace, raw land is ignored...buyers are not looking for a holding property, and are not interested in a building project. When a market begins to turn from buyers to sellers market conditions (which appears to be showing up in the residential segment), then undeveloped land once more comes into its own, as an investment opportunity. Here are just a few "best buys": -a Channel Ridge oceanview lot, on community water & sewer system, with panoramic ocean & mountain views, … (6 comments)

Salt Spring Island lifestyle "thoughts".... - 03/18/12 09:15 AM

Sometimes, potential buyers wonder how they'll be able to live on Salt Spring...what can they do? Interested in the hospitality industry? Tourism is a main driver of economic activity on the Gulf Islands. What about: operating a B&B, running a restaurant or coffee/tea space, providing a service such as security or a gardening service for off island owners, offering pet sitting or walking, working for a local business or starting your own business, creating an item to be sold at the busy Saturday Market in the Park, buying & managing a resort, offering a tech option, creating a wellness opportunity, … (2 comments)

Are we listening?...change is always with us! - 03/14/12 09:59 AM

Such an interesting world time that we all inhabit right now. Characterized by shift/change, where what used to work no longer fits, and it's not clear which path we should be on, no wonder there is fear out there. The potential for economic collapse threatens to unhinge a lifestyle we thought was permanent. I've often called this period a Charles Dickens moment. He wrote novels portraying the collapse of the centuries old agrarian social structure and the emergence of the Industrial Revolution & the new cityscape. The Industrial Revolution continued the evolution of the consumer as the engine of real … (8 comments)

Looking for Salt Spring property? Call me! Time to buy.... - 03/12/12 10:40 AM

Thinking about a Salt Spring Island or Gulf Islands property purchase? Definitely an excellent time to be a buyer! Excellent choice in properties: oceanfronts, oceanviews, acreages, farms, vineyards, equestrian options, building lots, recreational, commercial, investments...from 150,000 to 9,000,000...definitely something for everyone! Historically low interest rates...motivated sellers, willing to look at all serious offers...price reductions of approximately 35%, since the highs of 2006/07...a continuing unsettled economy that appears to erode the value of cash itself, and so encourages a return to unique hard assets, as a way to preserve capital...all signposts that remind us there is always an optimum time to … (9 comments)

Spring...open the windows, and let the light in! - 03/11/12 10:24 AM
Spring brings a message of awakening...the gardens erupting from crisp earth into snowdrops, crocus blooms, forsythia, camellias, daffodils, early flowering rhododendrons, bluebells, tulips...these are images that ease us into our best selves, the tightness of bundled winter evaporating around us. Spring means colour...gardens, sky, light lengthening & spilling through every crack of our world. In rural areas, lambs & calves & wild fawns lurch across fields & through forests. Life burgeons. Colour...it inspires & soothes. In cities, clothing changes out from isolating blacks & browns of winter into energizing greens, blues, & yellows of Spring. Houses like a spiff-up, too: weeding, … (4 comments)

Planting a garden this year? Check out your neighbourhood garden shop! - 03/07/12 09:20 AM

This is the time of year when gardens call! Even if we just do pots on decks, there's something about the restlessness of early Spring that has us checking out gardening centres! On Salt Spring, investigate Foxglove at the corner of Lower Ganges & Atkins Roads. Take a drive out to Arbutus Road on Southey Point, & discover Thimble Farm. Country Grocer in the Upper Village & Thrifty's in the Seaside Village also offer gardening options. And three cheers for the plantings throughout Ganges Village...early flowering shrubs & trees to inspire us.... I love coming across a boulevard or highway … (10 comments)

Being self-sufficient...just a prudent choice? - 03/05/12 05:27 PM

Much as some of us dream about having our own little hobby farm, being able to grow our own food, and to live a healthy outdoor life, it usually isn't possible to live this dream.
It is possible, though, even on a deck, patio or balcony, to grow veggies, some kinds of fruit, and to be able to enjoy one's own produce...herbs, lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries...dwarf beans, peas...carrots....    Nothing nicer than to taste truly fresh.   Great for kids to discover where that shrink wrapped food actually comes from, too!
Make friends with the organic gardeners in your area, and get on … (7 comments)

Salt Spring Island...a year round lifestyle, awaiting your pleasure! - 03/05/12 08:28 AM

Sometimes, people like to visit Salt Spring Island at the "off season" time, and on purpose...they want to see the Island at its "worst". By that, they mean when the weather might be dreary, when they expect it to be very quiet. The image, I suppose, is that everything stops, during winter on the Islands. Salt Spring, though, surprises! All of the Gulf Islands have their special charms...and each one is quite unique. There are certainly people who choose to live year-round, on all of them. Most, though, could still be described as summer places...the population would increase dramatically, in … (2 comments)

Day trips to soothe the soul...early Spring in the Gulf Islands! - 03/03/12 09:45 AM
March 3, 2012.
A soft day...milky sun, snowdrops and crocus flowering all over, buds waiting to burst into blossom...just needs a couple of days of stronger sun, and they'll all be there! Early Spring has a very special component to it, especially on the Pacific Northwest Coast.    We do get more grey days...not always rain, can be high cloud...and so when we emerge into the consistent sunny days, hearts soar. The Gulf Islands nestle into this protected boating waters region...the San Juan Islands in the U.S., which also enjoy our very temperate climate here, float right into the Southern Gulf … (7 comments)
