ask for lis list: Classic car shows...if one in your area, it's a Dad's Day winner.... - 06/16/12 09:48 AM

Looking for an off island adventure for Father's Day? For the past several years, Vancouver Island's Parksville/Qualicum communities have showcased a show & shine event. This year (19th annual??), there are approximately 720 cars expected! I love show & shines...classic cars are so lovely. And yes, I like to check out the Studebakers (now that was a forward thinking design!), the Chev Impala, the early Porsche, the sinuous XKE...and those snazzy hot-rods in flourescent hot colours...love the car run to the event streets. Have never been to Reno's Hot August Nights, but I think this must be our version. If … (5 comments)

ask for lis list: Early June events on Salt Spring Island! - 06/08/12 11:15 AM

The early part of June is often quiet...school's not out yet, vacation plans are targeting July, graduations are in the foreground.... Sometimes, smaller towns with tourist driven economies, create local events...on Salt Spring, there used to be a SeaCapers weekend. A tiny version will appear this year, and next year it will probably be on the Chamber calendar of official events. Worth bringing back.... On the 21 to 23, though, it's the Velo Village event, with almost 1000 cyclists on Island. Volunteers are still welcome...encouragement stations are dotted along the bike routes. Well done, Island Pathways, to be showcasing the … (3 comments)

ask for lis list: AGM tonight, for the Chamber of Commerce...make sure you're a member! - 05/31/12 10:52 AM

In business? On Salt Spring? Make sure you're a member of the renewed Chamber of Commerce. Be at tonight's Annual General Meeting, at Lion's Hall, beginning at 6 p.m. Interested in volunteering to sit on the Board? Let your name stand during the "nominations from the floor" portion of the AGM. Tourism is the main engine of commerce on Salt Spring. In a sense, everyone on the Island is in business. It's not just the obvious sector, the retail segment. In providing an item or a service "for sale", then one is in business. Help to create a viable local … (0 comments)

ask for lis list: Pacific Northwest Coast Spring-into-Summer! - 05/29/12 03:42 PM

Sliding into Summer? In spirit, for sure! This La Nina year has delivered a mixed bag of unusual weather patterns, globally. On the Pacific Northwest Coast, we seem to have been through a long late Fall...grey, rain events, windstorms, needing Fall weight clothing, even in May. Every now and again, a high builds in...inviting bursts of true late Spring, with sun, warmth, and definite beach weather! Then the lows, sweeping across the Pacific, track in again. Gardens like this sun-rain-sun-rain cycle...a very lush Spring surrounds us! But Summer weather in February in the Prairies? Something's askew! Meantime, enjoy those sunny … (4 comments)

A time of year of explosive & lush beauty, on the Pacific Northwest Coast! May is a month that we all dream about, in that November to March time of grey & drizzle, when our region lives up to its "wet coast" nickname. Now, though, it's about blossoms spilling everywhere...apple, plum, cherry, pear...rhododendrons & azaleas...lilacs & peonies...tulips & bluebells...magnolias & wisteria...and have you seen those Dogwoods? A fitting flower for B.C.'s provincial floral emblem! Wild roses hedge in daisy strewn pastures...climbing roses are budding, ready for June. Off to Ruckle Park or to Burgoyne Bay Park with a picnic...wade at … (10 comments)

May 19, 2012.
Got your best vantage points for enjoying the drama of the annual Round Salt Spring Sailing Race? The start is in Ganges Harbour...if you miss that, you can see them come round Beaver Point at Ruckle Park. For a long distance vista, catch the fleet from the heights of Mt Tuam Estates. Out at Musgrave Landing? They start up Sansum Narrows, past here. A great sighting deck is at the Seaside Kitchen at Vesuvius! Out at end of Arbutus Road, at Southey Point? Another great view of the fleet, as they round the island to start down … (0 comments)

ask for lis list: Victoria Day Holiday Weekend in Canada...beginning of summer? - 05/18/12 02:25 PM

The May Long Weekend is with us...called Victoria Day, it commemorates the birthday of Queen Victoria. This is a special year for Britain & the Commonwealth countries as it celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth...this marks 60 years on the throne. Lots of events, and members of the Royal Family will be visiting the Commonwealth countries, including coming to Canada. The Commonwealth countries certainly all began as colonies of Great Britain, at the close of the 19th Century, at the height of the Age of Empire...now, they are a loosely knit federation, involved with trade & commerce among many … (0 comments)

ask for lis list: Canadian Pacific Northwest Coast...it's about the water! - 05/15/12 11:00 AM

Coastal people...the allure of water.... Vancouver is an amazing city, suspended between sea & mountains. It has nowhere to go but up! The Sunshine Coast (good marketing ploy...gets same rain as Vancouver's North Shore!) is also a thin ribbon of land between sea & mountain. Vancouver Island's undulating length is split between wild west coast & softer east coast by the spiny med-section of those mountains, again. Victoria sits at the very south end of the large reach of Vancouver Island...it is the capital city of B.C. The Gulf Islands, including Salt Spring Island, nestle into the lee shore of … (4 comments)

Inviting verandah style covered deck at entrance, formal entry foyer, spacious oceanside living with custom and energy efficient fireplace, entertainment size dining with an ocean vista, cooks' dream … (1 comments)

ask for lis list: Who comes to Salt Spring Island? Well.... - 05/09/12 09:51 AM

Is there a typical buyer profile, for special Salt Spring Island or a Gulf Island? Don't think so! A very eclectic group of people call Salt Spring "home", and the Island seems to call forth this happy mix of residents. All ages are attracted...yes, a retirement option, but young families, too. A back to the land/hobby farm seeker, entrepreneurial retail business people, artists who welcome the illuminating culture available to them, and alternative health practitioners are also all attracted to the Island. With the Internet making it possible to live anywhere, & to successfully ply the waters of the digital … (1 comments)

ask for lis list: Tourism is the first driver in a secondary home market...& then? - 05/07/12 10:20 AM

One hears different statistics about reduced numbers of tourists visiting Salt Spring Island & the Gulf Islands. The Gulf Islands are not municipalities, and often the statistics on anything are anecdotal...basically, no one is "in charge". The Trust & the CRD are not replacements for a mayor & town council. On Salt Spring, the tourist centre compiles information based on asking questions from those who come in for information: are you visiting? Where are you from? Etc. This kind of compilation doesn't include the visitors who don't pop into the Tourist Centre. Nevertheless, anecdotal evidence is a pointer to a … (4 comments)

ask for lis list: Kitchens...the heart of the home! - 05/07/12 09:50 AM
Kitchens are the heart of a home, we all know that. It's also a space that calls forth the creative spirit...cooks hold forth here, romance is created, families coalesce here, the fragrance of food being allured into a feast lingers here. Individual choices in colour, flooring, backsplashes, cabinetry, countertops, lighting, appliances...of course. The warm charm of a kitchen, whether its design is modern or country or classic, inspires and calms and rejuvenates...think Julia Child, think tea and toast and comfort, think cuisine minceur...the kitchen is the heart, no matter the taste-buds of the moment. And what about the summer kitchen concept? … (4 comments)
