The 11th Port Jefferson Dickens Festival

The streets of Port Jefferson Village turn into a stage for this wonderful weekend experience! One weekend a year, for the past 10 years, volunteers from all over Long Island come to celebrate all that is Charles Dickens. the idea to turn Port Jefferson into a bustling Dickensonian era came from our then mayor, Jeanne Garant. Born out of a strong wish to help the merchants during a slow selling season, she created the Festival with a small group of volunteers. The Dickens Festival has grown into a large, upscale production.

Characters ranging from Father Christmas to Ebenezer Scrooge roam throughout the village and entertain. Restaurants serve period food, concerts and mini plays are scheduled throughout the weekend. Take a carriage ride, eat warm chestnuts, stroll through town and be greeted warmly by costumed townsfolk. Take a candlelight house tour, dance the night away at the Victorian Ball, or ice skate in the park...there is something for everyone to do.

Please pray for my son's best friend, Chris Malvetti. He passed away last night at the age of 21. Please pray for his family in the time of their loss, pray that the children of the community keep their faith.

What a hard and tragic time for the entire community.

He was a wonderful young man! He will always be remembered for his smile and good will for all. Please pray for the repose of his soul. I know that he is with Jesus.

Such a tragic loss and so hard for me to understand. I am praying for him and his family and for the children of our school district that they not blame God and keep (or get) a strong faith.

Do Something Adventurous!

Okay, so today was a really AWESOME day! After working 7 days a week,with what seems like forever....I took a half day off today and went with my newly turned 18 year old son and went skydiving! Mind you, I am not known to be the most adventurous person around...

From 15,000 feet, I flew out of a perfectly good airplane and ever so quickly fell to the earth! The beauty was spectacular, the fear very real. The memories with my son, PRICELESS!

My son is out before me! I am on the right with the pink shirt....I hated going on my back, I couldn't see anything!

This is the second time around for a skydive for me. The first was two years ago when my oldest son turned 18. Two down and two to go! Glad my daughter thinks I am crazy and won't go!

As the 4th of July approaches, it is a time to reflect on all things patriotic and NOT! No matter what your religious beliefs, political beliefs, nationality, age, etc, etc....we all have one thing in common. We should all be thankful that we are Free to choose who we become.

A very smart priest said that Freedom is not what we want to do, but Freedom is the right to become what we are meant to be! Imagine if we all became what we were meant to be!

Take time to give thanks for all that we have and all that we have the opportunity to be....catch a parade and clap for the men and women who served our country in past and present wars. They are heroes.

Take time to clap for the children who so innocently march down the street waving to the crowd, so proud to be marching in the parade, so proud to be noticed and recognized. What potential they have!

Take time to recognize the men and women who protect us from harms way...policeman, fireman-all of them working for the greater good.

Say hello to someone and smile, what a blessing it is that we are free...free to do what we want, free to believe what we want, free to BE what we want!
