Brown Patch? What the heck? - 11/29/07 09:44 AM

Hey West Bankers...does your yard look like this ? >>>>>>>>>
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a small brown patch in my front yard.  Hmmm. Wonder what that is?  As the days went on, the patches began popping up all over the place.  YIKES!
So, I patiently waited for my yard guy, Tim, to come.  I have the greatest yard guy on the West Bank...he shows up on time, he does a great job, he doesn't charge me a fortune and best of all, he always gives me great advice when I get yucky brown patches in my front yard.  Sorry, but … (12 comments)

Snowing at the Teddy Bear Circus - A New Orleans Holiday House Tour - 11/28/07 01:44 PM
One of the great things about being a part of a Mardi Gras krewe is the fact that many of the krewes have members in common.  Some belong to multiple organizations and attend functions and fundraisers for all.  One of the board members of the Krewe of Choctaw also belongs to the Krewe of Armeinius and today he gave me a (sshhhh!) sneak preview of their upcoming event Snowing at the Teddy Bear Circus, a holiday house tour with a teddy bear theme.

Choctaw River Parade: The End of a Tradition? - 11/27/07 05:36 PM

In an email from the Captain of the Krewe of Choctaw this morning, it was announced that the annual River Parade may be in jeopardy...another victim in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Prior to the 2006 Mardi Gras season, the River Parade was held on one of the ferry boats that usually travels between Algiers and Canal Street on the Mississippi River.  A unique event, the ferry boat would cruise up and down the river, followed by the fire boats, Coast Guard and tug boats.
Post Katrina, with no ferry boat available to use, the River Parade was moved onboard the … (9 comments)

Selling Your Home is a Business - Run It Like One! - 11/26/07 07:36 PM

Jumping into the real estate market, you have basically become a business owner, trying to sell a product - in this case, your home.  Like all small business owners, you need to know about supply and demand, what the current market conditions are, who your target customers are, what the competition is doing and how to properly advertise your product.  Without taking a crash course in economics, here are a few tips to help you move your "product" during a slowing market.

Target Your Customers
Who is your target customer?  This all depends on the product (house) that you are selling and your … (11 comments)

Selling Your West Bank Home? How a Price Change May Help. - 11/24/07 01:15 PM

As we come to the end of the year, many sellers on the West Bank are trying to determine if and when they should adjust the price on their homes for sale. Your REALTOR®, I'm sure, has provided you with an updated market analysis of the sales prices in your particular neighborhood. However, have they provided you with an absorption report?
An absorption report is a tool used to determine trends in your market.
How many homes are for sale in the area? Note: Homes listed with an agent only - For Sale by Owners are not included in these reports. How long … (12 comments)

Dinner and A Movie in Algiers - 11/20/07 03:32 PM
Winter, such as it is in New Orleans, is creeping up on us.  Daylight savings time has ended and the days are so much shorter.  When it's dark by 6:00 pm, I feel like the day is over and I just don't want to do much of anything.
Sometimes you just want to curl up on the sofa with a loved one and watch a movie.  Either the latest Hollywood hits on DVD or those old faithfuls...you know, the movies that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face or a tear to your eye.  In Algiers, the only movie rental place to see and … (6 comments)

Santa Hits the West Bank at Oakwood Center - 11/20/07 11:40 AM

As a little girl, I loved putting on my Christmas dress, pulling up my tights, strapping on my shiny new patent leather Mary Janes and standing in the line to visit Santa Claus.  While my younger sister was terrified (and cried every year) I couldn't wait to jump up on his lap and whisper in his ear all of the things I was longing to find under the tree on Christmas morning.  Oh, please...I want a Barbie...and some roller skates...and a new bike...the list went on and on.
It brings back so many memories to look at those old photographs that Mom … (6 comments)

Top 5 Tips for Creating a Home Office - 11/18/07 06:44 PM
With the holidays fast approaching, the electronics stores will be hustling and bustling, churning out TVs, DVDs, digital cameras and laptops.  Personal electronics are on the wish list for everyone from kids to grandparents.  Once you have all of those shiny, new toys where do you put them and how will you use them?
I have a home office that I used to spend most of my time in.  Computer, printer, scanner, fax...all of the tools of the West Bank real estate trade.  I painted it a warm, chocolate brown color and installed French doors, a new fan and window blinds.  It … (11 comments)

How To Take The Mystery Out Of Selling Your Home - 11/16/07 11:28 AM

I had a wonderful travel opportunity this month and made a short, whirlwind visit to London, England.  What a beautiful city!  Museums, historic churches, the Thames, the Tower of London, Big Ben and more.  While there, we took a coach (bus) tour of Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and the town of Bath, which I would highly recommend to anyone visiting.

Stonehenge is an incredible sight to see.  Surrounded by the English countryside, the stones rise up against a backdrop of pasture and sky.  There are many theories about the origination of the monument.  Was it a place of worship? A temple?  A guide … (5 comments)

West Bank Elections - November 17, 2007 - 11/16/07 08:05 AM

My father always told me, "I don't care who you vote for, as long as you vote".  Wise words, indeed.  Runoff elections in Louisiana are notorious for low voter turn out.  Don't let that happen this week...let your voice be heard and cast your ballots on Saturday.

Pass Your Blessings, Please - 11/13/07 10:58 AM

At this time of year, when we are all counting our blessings, I think it is important that we should also take the time to remember those less fortunate.  What if your blessings did not include a roof over your head or a place free of violence?  What if the smallest, necessary items were unavailable to you?  What would you do?  Where would you turn?

Algiers Applebee's Reopened!
After being absent from the Algiers restaurant scene since 2005, Applebee's on General de Gaulle had their grand reopening on November 12, 2007 at 11 am.  Staff hiring and training has been going on for the last few weeks and I personally know a few neighborhood teens who have gained their first entry into the working world with the reopening of this restaurant.  I'm thrilled to see another dining option in Algiers.

Speaking of dining...I had the pleasure of utilizing one of our locally owned businesses to cater an open house for me recently.  Rusty Camus, the owner at The … (0 comments)

Rouse's Supermarket Debuts in Algiers
Louisiana owned Rouse's Supermarket has taken over the Sav A Center location on General de Gaulle in Algiers which quietly closed on 10/29/07.  The reopening was on October 31, 2007 and the store layout is the same as before, but without the self check out lines.  I saw tons of fresh goodies in the bakery department when I visited to order a cake, and plenty of cashiers were on duty.  While it's not Breaux Mart, it is encouraging to see another locally owned business in Algiers, as I continue my quest to Stay Local!
