That's Not a Drag Queen....It's a Saints Fan! - 01/31/10 07:02 PM
We like to do things just a little differently here in New Orleans. And one of the things we do best is throw an impromptu parade for just about any reason.
For years and years, Buddy Diliberto (affectionately known as Buddy D) was the most prominent local sportscaster. He called the Saints games and reported on sports both on television and radio. The one thing he stuck to his guns on was the fact that the New Orleans Saints were not, and would never be, a good team. Callers to his radio show that would proclaim “this is the year” were … (11 comments)

Cruising the Mississippi River with Mighty Chief Choctaw - 01/31/10 09:42 AM
It may have been cold and gloomy outside, but onboard the Steamboat Natchez, the Krewe of Choctaw celebrated their 75th anniversary with the annual river parade yesterday.  We boarded bright and early in the morning for a 2 hour party cruise up and down the Mississippi River that was full of fun, music, food and Mardi Gras royalty.
The view of the city of New Orleans was a bonus, with such a different perspective of the city when it’s seen from the river.

With a fireboat from New Orleans leading the way and one from Plaquemines Parish following behind, there … (6 comments)

Spanish Moss and Live Oaks | A Visit to City Park in New Orleans, LA - 01/29/10 09:20 AM
Did you know that City Park in New Orleans is home to the largest stand of mature live oaks, not just in the country, but in the world? Dripping with ghostly looking spanish moss, they are a beautiful sight to see, whether you are driving or walking through the over 1,300 acres that make up the park.

With branches that soar into the sky and reach out to touch the ground (just begging to be climbed on), some of the oak trees in City Park are over 600 years old. They have survived numerous hurricanes and the tendency of man … (13 comments)

Know the Competition When Selling Your New Orleans West Bank Home - 01/26/10 03:08 PM
The first thing that we advise a potential home buyer to do before beginning their home search is to determine how much they are qualified for and what price range makes them the most comfortable with their monthly mortgage payment.  Once they have done that, we start narrowing the search based on location, condition and amenities.
While the old real estate mantra is location, location, location, the primary driver in most home purchases is price, price, price.
Here’s a quick look at the 2009 home sales on the West Bank, broken down by price range:

There are some interesting statistics … (8 comments)

Lucky Dogs | New Orleans Photos - 01/23/10 05:46 PM
In any other part of the country, you’d think I was talking about some pampered pooches.  In New Orleans, a Lucky Dog has a whole other meaning.

The hot dog carts have been a fixture in the French Quarter for as long as I can remember (and was the one craving I had when expecting child #1).   The company has expanded and now will provide carts and servers for company picnics, parties and more.  Fun, but to me they should still be eaten late at night while standing on the sidewalk just off of Bourbon Street….

New Orleans West Bank Real Estate | How the New FHA Guidelines May Impact Home Buyers and Sellers - 01/22/10 04:30 PM
This week, David Stevens, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Commissioner, announced policy changes to how FHA loans will be handled later this year.  We don’t have specific dates or all of the fine print yet, but here is the gist of the changes:
The upfront Mortgage Insurance Premium (MIP) will be increased from 1.75% to 2.25% of the loan This cost is typically rolled into a home buyer’s loan, increasing the monthly payment.  The additional half percent MIP charge will result in negligible changes in payment amounts for most borrowers.  This change is expected to go into effect in the spring.

Moving From the West Coast to the Gulf Coast | Your PCS to NAS JRB New Orleans - 01/21/10 08:49 AM
A little bird recently put a bug in my ear (yeah, I’m know I’m mixing metaphors or whatever you call them) and told me that there are going to be a good number of military relocations from San Diego to NAS JRB New Orleans in the next couple of months.
If you are amongst those that leaving behind sun, sand and an ocean view, let me welcome you to New Orleans and to the West Bank.
I was recently in San Diego and Newport Beach and I have to say that I was hard pressed to leave. It’s a stunningly … (8 comments)

Home Buyer Etiquette | Dos and Don'ts When Touring Homes for Sale - 01/14/10 02:23 PM
I met with a seller this week who was upset.  Not with me, but with a family that had viewed their home with the kids in tow.  Apparently, during the showing no one was watching the 4 year old as she darted from room to room, touching and moving things all along the way.  The owners were forced into the role of babysitter to protect their belongings from sticky little fingers because neither the parents nor the agent was paying attention.
Unfortunately, this happens all too often.

Before you begin your West Bank home search, here are a few … (49 comments)

Behind the Scenes of Mardi Gras | Krewe of Choctaw Celebrates 75th Anniversary - 01/12/10 02:54 PM
Most people, unless they’ve been involved in a krewe, don’t get to attend Mardi Gras balls in New Orleans.  Some of the newer, huge organizations sell tickets to the public, but it’s usually to a very large, overcrowded event that is lacking in tradition.
That’s why I love being part of the Krewe of Choctaw.  It’s not the biggest krewe in the area, but it has a long history as part of Mardi Gras on the West Bank, and this year we are celebrating our 75th anniversary.  To kick off the season, the annual Big PowWow (our version of a ball) … (14 comments)

I Thought West Was Thataway... - 01/11/10 02:15 PM

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Unless you are on the West Bank of New Orleans, watching the sun set on the East Bank…
It’s a little confusing for folks that are new to the city, but, if you look at the region on a map, it makes perfect sense because of the way the river snakes through and across the area before turning north.
Want to be even more confused? Part of the West Bank is also south of the city. There’s a reason that when we tell you how to get somewhere, the … (12 comments)

Subtropical Climate? Not so much today... - 01/08/10 08:42 AM

So much for our subtropical climate.  Like most of the rest of the country, it’s cold in New Orleans today with a forecast of more cold and colder.  My garden, which is full of tropical plants, is taking a beating.  One too many nights of below freezing temperatures have resulted in a sea of brown.  What’s not brown looks like it melted :(
At least I have the camellias and roses to bring a little color, since they don’t seem to mind the cold at all.

Hook and Ladder Cemetery | A bit of Gretna LA History - 01/06/10 08:35 AM
It’s funny what you get used to when you grow up here.  It’s not until we have visitors that I’m reminded not everyone buries their dead above ground.  The vaults in the Hook and Ladder Cemetery take up an entire block, bounded by Newton, Tenth, Eleventh and Lafayette Streets in the City of Gretna.

From the City of Gretna Website:
The Hook and Ladder Cemetery was established around 1859 and contains monuments of interest, including the those of John Ehret, the first mayor of Gretna and Louis Oscar Fried, the first casualty of the skirmish between the United States … (15 comments)

Have a Seat Along the Mississippi River - 01/05/10 10:21 PM
There are so many places along the West Bank of the Mississippi River with a wonderful view of both the river and the New Orleans city skyline.  There’s a bike path on the levee in Algiers Point that starts at the ferry landing and continues into Gretna, where this photo was taken.

On weekdays, there are very few people wandering around here, so it’s a perfect spot to stop and enjoy the view from.   Just park along the River Road (1st Street) and walk right up the steps near the amphitheater.  Bring your camera, since there is sure to … (4 comments)

There's Always A Place for you in New Orleans - 01/04/10 10:57 AM
I had a long conversation with a friend recently. She moved from the West Coast to the East Coast last year and is feeling a little like a fish out of water in her new city. The culture is completely different from what she is used to and, in her opinion, the people just aren’t as friendly.
That’s not to say that everyone on the East Coast is unfriendly. Nothing could be further from the truth. But, my friend hasn’t found those like minded people yet that will allow her to feel more at home and less like a transplant. … (18 comments)

The Season of Merriment Begins in New Orleans - 01/03/10 09:26 AM
Even though it’s not Twelfth Night yet (the official start of the Carnival season), the 2010 balls have begun taking place all around the metro area. We were lucky enough to be invited to the King Arthur ball this weekend, so we gussied up in our finest, found our seats and were treated to a beautiful tableau of Mardi Gras royalty and costumes.

The intricate head and shoulder pieces and trains are stunning and are designed and created locally. I love the way the light shines through the feathers on the king’s costume as he is approaching the stage.

New Orleans West Bank Now In Living Color - 01/02/10 02:38 PM
I’ve been told that photos are one of the most important things I can provide here for people considering a relocation to the West Bank of New Orleans.   Being able to really see the area, not just some bad MLS photos of houses, seems to be helpful.
With that in mind, I’m trolling through the hundreds of photos that I’ve taken over the last year in the various communities.  I’ll be sharing them with you, hopefully a new one each day, but I’m sure that sometimes life and business will get in the way.

This shot was taken at Woodland … (12 comments)

Tired of Cookie Cutter Homes? Consider Buying a Historic New Orleans Home Instead - 01/02/10 10:07 AM
After Katrina, with the city in turmoil and everyone uncertain about the future, my family seriously considered relocating to another state.  We even started looking for houses in a couple of locations that appealed to us because they were close to family and possible jobs.
The one thing that stood out to me when house hunting was that most of the homes were pretty much the same from neighborhood to neighborhood.  There seemed to be about a half dozen floor plans that all looked the same from the outside and were all finished the same on the inside.   I mean, … (16 comments)
