gretna events: The 15th Annual Gretna Heritage Festival Was Rockin'! - 10/06/09 11:52 AM
The 2009 Gretna Heritage Festival is now part of the history books, and despite the fact that Sunday was dreary and rainy, I’m sure that another new attendance record must have been set. After spending 3 days on the festival grounds, I didn’t even come close to seeing or hearing everything, but I did get a really good sampling of food, music and fun. The festival opened on Friday afternoon to a queue of waiting people and more continued to arrive in a steady stream throughout the evening. Lines quickly formed at the various food booths around dinner time and

gretna events: The festival is here! 15th Annual Gretna Heritage Festival this weekend! - 10/02/09 02:56 PM
From it’s start with one stage and a couple of hundred attendees, the Gretna Heritage Festival has come a long, long way! The fun kicks off again tonight and lasts through the weekend with a stellar line up of music, over 40 food booths, carnival rides and art, jewelry and craft booths to satisfy your need for retail therapy and more. The weather forecast for Friday is looking a little damp, so throw on your raincoat, pull up your galoshes (or your shrimp boots – we don’t mind) and head on out to Gretna for an amazing start to

gretna events: Santa Hits the West Bank at Oakwood Center - 11/20/07 11:40 AM
As a little girl, I loved putting on my Christmas dress, pulling up my tights, strapping on my shiny new patent leather Mary Janes and standing in the line to visit Santa Claus. While my younger sister was terrified (and cried every year) I couldn't wait to jump up on his lap and whisper in his ear all of the things I was longing to find under the tree on Christmas morning. Oh, please...I want a Barbie...and some roller skates...and a new bike...the list went on and on. It brings back so many memories to look at those old photographs that Mom

Rouse's Supermarket Debuts in Algiers Louisiana owned Rouse's Supermarket has taken over the Sav A Center location on General de Gaulle in Algiers which quietly closed on 10/29/07. The reopening was on October 31, 2007 and the store layout is the same as before, but without the self check out lines. I saw tons of fresh goodies in the bakery department when I visited to order a cake, and plenty of cashiers were on duty. While it's not Breaux Mart, it is encouraging to see another locally owned business in Algiers, as I continue my quest to Stay Local! The New Orleans Food and Farm

gretna events: West Bank Boys & Girls Club Celebration of Rebuilding - 10/19/07 08:26 AM
Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded - Jess Lair Like a lot of others my age, when I was growing up, my mother did not work outside of the home. She was waiting when I arrived home from school at the end of the day, making sure I did my homework before I was allowed to go outside to play or ride my bike. Times have certainly changed.... Single parent families, families where both mom and dad must work to make ends meet, children being raised by extended family members who also have jobs.

gretna events: 2007 Gretna Heritage Festival a Big Success - 10/08/07 08:18 PM
What a weekend! I am worn out from spending 3 straight days at the Gretna Heritage Festival, but it was time well spent. For those of you who missed it, here's my recap of the events: Friday The festival kicked off on Friday afternoon at 4 pm. While it was overcast with some rain off and on, it didn't stop the visitors from coming through the gates. I was working at the Krewe of Choctaw booth, selling (and eating) shrimp poboys, crawfish pies and "Shrimp in Da Cup", so I did not get a chance to catch any of the musical entertainment on

St. Anthony School in Gretna, LA will be holding a paper drive on August 29, 2007. It's a great opportunity to recycle rather than dispose of your newspapers! Drop off papers at 900 Franklin Ave in Gretna up until 10 am on 8/29/07. I'll have a very angry 11 year old if I don't ask for the papers to go to the 6th grade section!
