west bank events: Little Friends Helping Friends - 10/15/09 09:11 PM
Recently, I heard about a 5 year old boy who lives in Algiers named Ben Sarrat.  Ben is fighting an inoperable brain tumor caused by pediatric cancer.  His family is doing everything they can to make Ben’s life happy, including sending him to St. Andrew the Apostle School which has been a dream of his since he was very small.  Attending St. Andrew’s has let Ben meet some great kids – and those kids are showing just how great they are this weekend.
Because they want to help Ben get better, several of his friends and classmates have organized a multi-family … (8 comments)

west bank events: Great American Trailer Park Comes to the West Bank - 03/02/08 10:05 AM
Saturday night, I had the chance to attend my first ever show at the Westwego Performing Arts Theatre in historic Salaville.  Out to celebrate the hubby's birthday this weekend, we started the evening with the buffet dinner in the community center, then walked out the back door and directly into the intimate theatre that is just the right size to give everyone a great view of the stage.   While dinner was not that impressive (next time I'll save the $15), the musical was quite entertaining and showcased the local talents of the ensemble cast.
Set in the fictional Armadillo Acres trailer … (5 comments)

Algiers Applebee's Reopened!
After being absent from the Algiers restaurant scene since 2005, Applebee's on General de Gaulle had their grand reopening on November 12, 2007 at 11 am.  Staff hiring and training has been going on for the last few weeks and I personally know a few neighborhood teens who have gained their first entry into the working world with the reopening of this restaurant.  I'm thrilled to see another dining option in Algiers.

Speaking of dining...I had the pleasure of utilizing one of our locally owned businesses to cater an open house for me recently.  Rusty Camus, the owner at The … (0 comments)

Rouse's Supermarket Debuts in Algiers
Louisiana owned Rouse's Supermarket has taken over the Sav A Center location on General de Gaulle in Algiers which quietly closed on 10/29/07.  The reopening was on October 31, 2007 and the store layout is the same as before, but without the self check out lines.  I saw tons of fresh goodies in the bakery department when I visited to order a cake, and plenty of cashiers were on duty.  While it's not Breaux Mart, it is encouraging to see another locally owned business in Algiers, as I continue my quest to Stay Local!

Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded - Jess Lair
Like a lot of others my age, when I was growing up, my mother did not work outside of the home. She was waiting when I arrived home from school at the end of the day, making sure I did my homework before I was allowed to go outside to play or ride my bike. Times have certainly changed....

What a weekend! I am worn out from spending 3 straight days at the Gretna Heritage Festival, but it was time well spent. For those of you who missed it, here's my recap of the events:
Friday
The festival kicked off on Friday afternoon at 4 pm. While it was overcast with some rain off and on, it didn't stop the visitors from coming through the gates. west bank events: Algiers Economic Development Foundation Luncheon - 08/23/07 05:14 PM
Algiers Economic Development Foundation Luncheon
On Wednesday, September 12, 2007, the Algiers Economic Development Foundation will hold its monthly luncheon at the Aurora Tennis & Swim Club (5244 General Meyer).  The guest speaker will be Dawn Brown, WWL-TV meteorologist who will cover hurricane preparedness.  I can't think of a more relevant topic at this time of year.
These meetings are open to the public and always very informative.  It's also a great way to network with other Algiers residents and business owners.
