The concession stand is raising funds for the Estes Park School District instrumental music program, earmarked primarily to provide funding to employ Dan Timbrell, a retired band director, as a para-professional for the school band department. Due to reduced funding from the state, the Estes Park School District eliminated several teaching positions and nearly all para-professional positions, including the band para-professional, in the district to meet an expected $1,000,000 shortfall. The Estes Park Board of REALTORS received a presentation from John Gerhard, of the CSU Everitt Real Estate Center regarding our current marketconditions. CSU has been studying market areas in Northern Colorado since 1997 and has compiled very detailed market statistics based on paired sales data, which follows properties through repeated sales. Since 1997, residential properties in Estes Park have appreciated approximately 150%, with a peak happening in 2008.

The Estes Park Board of REALTORS and the Estes Valley Housing Authority has been working for over a year on a downpayment assistance program targeted toward local workers who are trying to purchase a home. On Friday, the first recipients closed on their first home. Josh works in construction for the Portfolio Group, a local firm that specializes in high-end homes. Carissa works for Simply Christmas, a retail store for all things holiday right on Elkhorn Avenue.

The day after my snow shovel exhibited signs of a nervous breakdown, the sun came out and it was absolutely glorious! This photo was taken at the top of Devil's Gulch Road on the way from Estes Park to Glen Haven as I was checking on an under contract home with a failed septic system. Yuck, to say the least. I always love popping over the hill and seeing this view!

Yesterday, the Estes Park High School Jazz Band performed for the Estes Park Rotary Club. The kids were great and the Rotarians loved the jazz standards from "Opus in Chartreuse" to "A Night in Tunisia". It's cool to watch the kids learn to perform together and play ad lib solos in front of a crowd.
The Estes Park Rotary Club provides $500.00 in scholarships for the Estes Park Band students to attend summertime Band Camps. I'll have three boys in band camp this summer at the University of Nebraska that will benefit from their generosity!

One of my favorite volunteer activities is to be a part of the "Band Boosters"...a group of parents that support the Estes Park High School instrumental music program. The kids are great, and they have a fantastic director, Mr. Chuck Varilek.
I had the opportunity to go with the band kids to a competition in Greeley, where they performed in a concert venue with judges, then had a sightreading portion, also a judged event. The sightreading judge was so impressed at how Mr. Varilek took the kids through 6 minutes of reviewing music together with no sounds … (0 comments)

Good news about the real estate market in Estes Park...for the first quarter of 2010, we had 28 single family homes and 16 condo sales for a total of 40 units sold...up from 13 single family homes and 13 condos sold in the first quarter of 2009. That is a 65% increase in sales volume! And for us here in Estes Park, it's still the "off-season", with our busy summer season approaching.

Sometimes we feel a little spring challenged here in the mountains, but everyone is so anxious to get outside and get rid of the wintertime cabin fever, that we will take what we can get!
Once we all get outside, we need to watch out for one of our least favorite signs of spring...the wood tick. They aren't nearly as cute and charming as the chipmunks that come out of hiberation at about the same time in March. Ticks seem to be most active in May and diminish as the temperatures head upwards, but it is possible … (2 comments)

Here in Estes Park, we are a little "Spring Challenged". It's kinda like Mother Nature with PMS...a bit unpredictable! We can have a foot of snow one day and 60 degrees with sun the next, which makes for what we call here the "mud season".
There are, however, a few signs that give us hope here at 7522 feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountains, and one of those is the appearance of our adorable chipmunks. Once they wake up from hibernation, we know for sure that there will be flowers and leaves coming!

I have always loved St. Patrick's Day. It's my little brother's birthday...and it was always a fun time to go out and celebrate!

I thought I would share photos from our third annual "Valentine's Day Road Show" in Estes Park. Jon and Marsha Sypher co-sponsored this event with my company, The Yellow Mailbox Real Estate Services. They provided the barbershop quartet "Senior Moments" and I supplied cookies and handmade Valentine's cards from Estes Park Elementary School students. We stopped at Prospect Park Living Center, then the Estes Park Senior Center, and wrapped things up at the Good Samaritan Village. Everyone had a wonderful time!

The First Annual Winter Festival in Estes Park was a lot of fun, and had unusually mild (50's) weather. The organizers had some cool events, like the Chili Cook Off, and a scavenger hunt that sent participants to shops on Elkhorn Avenue for clues...and maybe a little shopping, too!
Best of Show in the Chili Cook-Off went to my friend, Barney Treadway...he's a great Estes Park character...a computer tech guy who designs websites, is a oenophile and an excellent cook! (We won't mention his fashion sense...)

It was another one of those Thursday mornings where two of the boys need to be at school at 7AM...which means it is dark when we leave the house and the sunrise is starting about the time we get to school. This morning, the sunrise was crazy...the sun was filtering sideways through dark clouds, which made the bright sunlight and dark shadow on the mountain range to the west. It was nature at its best...so beautiful it did not require any special photography or processing, these were just an iphone from a car window!

My son came home from school with an assignment to make a poster about themes relating to Martin Luther King, Jr., such as peace and equality. They had a march through the school hallways to demonstrate their committment to these issues. It was the sweetest thing to see...elementary school kids with their posters in the hallway promoting peace, love and equality for everyone.
I was happy to be able to do an art project with Chase...he was the art director on this one, and i had big fun in Photoshop with some posterization and adjustment layer effects...

The Estes Park Board of REALTORS invited Mike Connolly, President of the "Angels Above Foundation" to speak at our meeting last Thursday. Mike gave a presentation regarding the Estes Park Memorial Observatory that was recently completed. I was up bright and early this morning to get some pre-sunrise camera work in. I headed south on HWY 7 toward High Peak Camp to get some shots of Meeker and Long's Peak at sunrise...but I came across this coyote at Lily Lake. I've seen this big guy before in our backyard and he didn't seem concerned at all that I had a camera pointed at him while he was trying to sniff out breakfast. That is one of my favorite things about living in Estes Park...to see wildlife like that up close!

I ran across an interesting blog in Twitter this morning. Terry White, who is an instructor for the Adobe Creative Suite, was discussing home printers. He posed the question as to how many people used their printer as much as they used to...primarily relating to printing photos. 31% of the respondants said they use their printer all the time, 29% said their use is decreasing and 31% said they hardly ever use their printers anymore! Even with the wintry weather upon us, it's still a great time to put on those snow boots and take a hike here in Estes Park. (might even give you a jump start on a few of those New Year's resolutions...) We not only have great shopping and restaurants here in town, but the most spectacular backyard ever!
