Grossmont center hasn't been hip for a long time, but Banbu Sushi Bar and Grill has added a bit of spice to the area.  Only a San Diego native would remember this one upon a time movie theater that now houses this Japanese-American fusion restaurant.

The atmosphere is very downtown hip, but without the parking and traffic hassles you'd find down there.  The menu ranges from sushi, to soup and salad,  yummy but fatty appetizers like fried calamari and chicken wings to a traditional American dinner of steak and shrimp.   There is an outdoor dining area with fire-pit which makes for a great happy hour atmosphere.  The food is delicious, a bit pricey, but worth it to have a bit of downtown sophistication away from all the hustle and bustle.
