earth: Earth-Wise New Year - 12/31/08 07:10 PM
Earth-Wise New Year
The natural new year comes in so quietly, as not even to notice it.  December 21 finds the earth reversing the 'tilt' on its so-called 'axis'. They say the sun 'stands still' for that time as the Northern Hemisphere transitions from the shortest, darkest day of the year to lengthened days from that moment until the Summer Solstice.
That sounds like the beginning of the New Year to me - and my favorite day of the entire year.

With many intellectualized systems, humanity has veered so far from natural, universal and earth cycles, that we have little or … (31 comments)

earth: Part 4 * Restore The Earth * Now You're Composting! * Additional Tips & Guidelines - 03/22/08 08:36 PM
Restore The Earth  Series PART 1 PART 2 PART 3
Some Notions That Make Composting Difficult AND Crazy:
Composting without BUGS Composting without mold  Enzymatic composting ??? if you want to complicate it, go for it! 1) Composting Bugs & Organisms - break down waste
Bugs are natural decomposers. Sow bugs, earthworms, centipedes, beetles, among many others. Common green mold was BORN to compost If you have a healthy (moist) compost, there will be lots of bugs; earthworms are terrific. Decomposing bugs will be happy in a healthy compost and leave the gardens alone Bugs leave completely composted humous for new new waste - keep it coming! various complex levels of micro-organisms are involved in creating … (22 comments)

RESTORE THE EARTH * PART 1 * PART 2 * PART 4
WOW! I'm so impressed with your eagerness to compost! I am trying to make this as simple as possible. Part of the confusion is information that complicates a simple natural procedure.
CREATING GARDEN GOLD
What To Put Into Your Compost:
kitchen waste excluding animal products coffee grounds promote breakdown - some cafe's are more than happy to give you their grounds yard waste - tough sunflower or corn stalks will break down easier if you first break them up leaves & grass clippings - these will clump, so mix with other materials Precautions

earth: Part 2 * Restore The Earth * Compost Your Kitchen Waste - 02/18/08 01:23 AM
PART TWO   *  (Part One)  'Restore The Earth....' (P Three)  (P Four)
YAY FOR COMPOST!! It's another sunshiny Okanagan morning.
The earth really is so very wise all on its own - it does everything right.
I said composting is easy - and it is - there are things that need to be understood to achieve success - or remain in the mystery of compost failure. So a few more preliminaries first.
All we need to do is learn is how the earth does it best. The biggest frustration I find is that people see it as a big 'mystery'
"Well I put the stuff … (28 comments)

earth: Restore The Earth - Compost Your Kitchen Waste - 02/12/08 02:12 PM
PART ONE     (P TWO)  (P Three)  (P Four) Sunshine and the thaw of the mild temperatures had me thinking spring and compost already this morning!
I love compost - people used to think I was a little nuts when I'd give them a tour of my yard and gardens - then the compost bins!
When you collect all your kitchen waste separately from the garbage that gets thrown out, you truly get to see what it amounts to. I live alone downtown and fortunately take part in the Kelowna Community Gardens. My waste is put into one of those plastic salad bins that you buy organic greens … (28 comments)

earth: Cycling - 'Fraiche Aire' - Black & White - 07/20/07 07:03 PM
Thanks Lola for your 'Black & White' update - http://activerain.com/blogsview/151924/RendezVous-in-Black-White It caused me to clarify for myself that we've gotten to a consciousness of environmental issues that can no longer be considered 'gray' at all, but in fact are clearly black & white.
In response, I don't know the scientific terminology & understanding of the various particulates in the air as per tonnage of carbon, etc. The broad term pollution is what I know. I have begun to understand the grave concern for quality of life & affected earth cycles.
My personal concern has caused me to take personal measures. I am fortunate for many reasons to live in the downtown … (6 comments)
