Stop it! *And I mean NOW!* - 12/30/11 08:16 PM
Dear Agent: Don't email me every time you get a price reduction, a new listing, or your seller decides to offer a selling agent bonus (unless--maybe--if it's enough to finance a family vacation).
I  pay MLS dues. That means I get updated information through MLS. Your email notices to me are spam, and they clog up my email. The MLS HotSheet works just fine for me. During this very busy end of the year, holiday time, I received the following email announcements today from local agents:
Hello fellow Realtors,   We have a new price on our listing ...... Great home, … (6 comments)

I'm gonna do it! I'm gonna use sports quotes - 12/29/11 01:19 AM

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. ~Wayne Gretzky I first heard that slice of wisdom from my daughter's church league basketball coach nearly 20 years ago. He put it on hand-written signs for every girl to post in her room. I thought then that it was a basketball quote, but also I know it's a life philosophy. Today, while trying to find the author's name, I discovered that hockey great Wayne Gretzky is responsible for those wise words.
Turns out, Gretzky quotes apply to real estate decisions and even to a real estate career.

*You can be a diva* or you can show the house - 12/27/11 07:59 PM
The caller wanted to see one of the company's listings, but she wanted an appointment that day, 30 minutes after our office closed. The floor agent did not want to work that late and offered the phone call to me. I now have a very nice listing, another deal under contract, and the prospect of yet more business--all from that showing.
The listing the caller wanted to see was not mine, but I knew that the owners needed to sell. The caller was impatient and even demanding, having already left unanswered messages for the listing agent, who was out of town that day. More than … (94 comments)

*Answer the phone* People shop for houses even on holidays... - 12/26/11 11:55 PM
The office was closed for the holiday but the phone was ringing, so I answered it. Actually, the phone rang three times while I was in the office for a short time today. The first two callers asked for their agents. Both already had their agents' cell phone numbers, so those calls were quickly dispatched.
The third call, however, was a property inquiry; and I answered several questions for them. They agreed to let me set them up on auto-notify and gave me an email address, as well as some specifics about their search. Now, THAT's what I call a productive … (13 comments)

Just tell the truth, PLEASE! - 12/17/11 08:06 PM
As I rounded the corner, I saw the tarped roof of the "good" condition house I was about to show to my client. While he wants a moderate house, he has clearly told me that he does not want a "fixer."
When he phoned me today about the new listing which had been delivered to his inbox via the MLS auto-notify I defined for him, I looked up the listing. Sure enough, a "good" house quite a bit under $90,000 in a desirable subdivision, three bedrooms, 11-18 years old. Hmmm.
"We'd better see that one right away," I agreed with … (3 comments)

I cashed a commission check, and I'm not afraid to admit it! - 12/17/11 10:39 AM
When I left teaching and went into sales, I got a very RUDE awakening. Though that first sales job was actually educational sales IN EXACTLY THE FIELD where I had been widely recognized as among the best in the state (and even the nation), I found that my former colleagues suddenly had instant suspicion of my character. I was completely dismayed at how so many people somehow thought I had undergone an ethical and personality transplant after 20 years of teaching.
In fact, I took my teacher personality into sales, and it has served me well in real estate. That was … (6 comments)

2011 December blogging challenge--I'm too busy to blog! - 12/13/11 08:22 PM
Don't even bother to read this! I'm just trying to get caught up on logging my efforts during December (for the challenge, of course). While it seems others are busy getting ready for Christmas, I have been slammed with business this month. Now don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled. Business has been down this year, so it's good to end the year on a busy note. In fact business has been so spotty the last few months that I'm waiting on December closings before I do ANY Christmas shopping. Given that fact, it's actually been pretty easy to ignore all of … (2 comments)

I'm having so much Android fun! I found a new spelling tool - 12/11/11 05:09 PM
I could get lost in the Android Market on my cell phone for hours, and so much of it is free (for the price of watching ads). Dictionary.com is my new favorite: Just say a word, and the Dictionary.com ap will spell it for you. Now isn't that a kick? You can even say the word wrong, as is the case with camaraderie (often mispronounced komraderie). If that were not enough, the ap will even say the word for you.
You can search by typing the word (the way you would when using the online version of Dictionary.com, one of my … (8 comments)

Chan's Magical Soup (2011 December challenge day 9 ) - 12/09/11 11:44 PM
Chilled to the bone five times today, I closed out the day by bringing home some House Special Soup from Chan's Restaurant. After she took my take-out order, Kiki brought me hot tea to drink while I waited. My family and I love Chan's, and it is our Saturday lunch destination every weekend, so Kiki and Niki (wife and husband proprietors) were somewhat taken aback when I showed up on Friday evening.
Not to worry, though, I will be back tomorrow with the family. Tonight, I needed the soup and hot tea when I finally wrapped up the day's business after … (6 comments)

2011 December Blogging Challenge (day4) - 12/04/11 10:52 PM
Because I was with my sister, who got out of the hospital yesterday and is recovering from major surgery, I maintained contact with my business base primarily via cell phone. I referred one customer to another agent. I was also able to locate a plat for some acreage and forwarded that to a potential buyer. I'm kind of holding on by my fingernails.
Neither sickness, rain, sleet--speaking of which, it's raining sheets right now, with snow is in the forcast for next week.
