toronto: Village of Roncesvalles in Toronto - 01/08/11 11:33 AM
This summer I made my third trip to Torontoand second one to visit my daughter Rachel...after doing our tour of New York and New England and the Maritimes I spent a week wandering the neighbourhoods and villages of Toronto.  One of my favorites is Roncesvalles........it reminds me of my home country Croatia.  Probably because its surrounded by a multitude of Eastern European (mostly Polish) bakeries, butchers, delis, perogies and cabbage rolls.....mmmm mmm..I guess thats why its sometimes called "Little Poland. .I stocked up on a variety of Poppyseed cakes for my brother (his fav) and smoked sausages for my Dad and pastries and … (16 comments)

toronto: Toronto's ~ The Junction - 01/02/11 06:23 PM
While visiting Toronto this summer I stayed in a B & B in High Park and next to a cool area called "The Junction."  In the mid-1850's most of the area was part of the Keele family Carlton Race Course, home of the first Queen's Plate.  For a long time it was known as an industrial neighbourhood, where the railways cross; it was also the home to the Ontario Stockyards and many meat packing companies.  Interestingly enough it was the last dry area of Toronto (until 2000 - the last area in Toronto to prohibit alcohol) which severely impacted the growth of the … (5 comments)

toronto: Toronto's Kensington Market - 01/02/11 04:51 PM
Kensington Market in Toronto - is an eclectic delight - and where my daughter Rachel lives - although she's been home for a few weeks (Hallelujah) over Christmas she'll be heading back all too soon - and frankly I can't blame her.

Kensington offers pretty much everything you could ask for...cool vintage, retro and classic shops, independent designers, italian bakeries, fish shops, neat cafes and several spice shops.  Actually thats what I asked Rach to bring me for a Christmas present - an assortment exotic fresh spices - hand picked!

toronto: Toronto's St. Lawrence Market - BuskerFest - 01/02/11 04:28 PM
This last summer I had an opportunity to enjoy Toronto's BuskerFest in the St. Lawrence Market District...(One of the 25 best markets in the world, according to Food & Wine magazine! North America's largest Busker Festival and sponsored by Scotiabank with proceeds benefiting Epilepsy Toronto.
It was fun, with amazing acrobats, aerialists, puppets, fire-breathers - and a few things no words can describe - With over a million spectators and over 100 of the best street performers from around the world - Just another reason why I love Toronto so much!

toronto: Toronto's Croft Alley - A Graffiti Alley of Colourful Proportions! - 10/15/10 10:05 AM
Walking home after dinner, my daughter Rachel wanted me to see what she called 'the Best Alley ever'  or Croft Alley (also known as Graffiti Alley or Rush Lane - the laneway  south of Queen between Bathurst and John, (actually the lane ends and starts again at a couple of different places).
I have to admit that I was fleetingly thinking that it probably was a good alley to  get mugged in....as the alley went on and on slowly you started to see the odd wall or garage with graffiti on it - but as you walked on you discovered fences, doorways and sidwalks … (6 comments)

What I didn't realize was the 4 hrs of waiting time it would take to get up and down it!  For those of yOu that know me - I'm probably not the most patient person in the world...........And after spending the last 6 hour walking at the Canadian Exhibition - then walking another hour to the … (25 comments)

toronto: Hollywood of the North - Toronto's - The Distillery ( my Toronto Series) - 09/27/09 05:04 AM
I know it seems like  My Toronto Visit Series never ends ~ but its such a fascinating City and there's so much to share ~ On my 2nd day in Toronto Sylvie and I headed out to the Distillery. It reminded me of Vancouver's Gastown in some ways.  It's one of Canada's premier arts, culture and heritage precincts.....a great forum for artists and creative industries.
The Distillery District, is a national Historic Site and represents the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian Industrial Architecture in North America. Formerly known as The Gooderham and Worts Distillery,it's played an important role in the growth and wealth … (13 comments)

toronto: High Park - Toronto's Jewel of a Park - (My Toronto Visit Part V) - 09/10/09 09:06 AM
How fortunate could I be to have my B & B right next to High Park?  Over 399 acres of almost wilderness right in the middle of the city.  No wonder Toronto is called a City within a Park!

Almost a third of the park is still in its natural state, with unusual and rare plants, like woodland ferns, cup plants and wild blue lupines.  My almost 3 hour walk around the park was finished off on the park train - when I said 'daddy take me home, my feet are killing me!' lol

I was trying to figure … (6 comments)

toronto: Indian Grove B & B ~ High Park, Toronto (My Toronto Trip Part IV) - 09/08/09 04:10 AM
After a leisurely 2 hour ride to Toronto - Sylvie Conde met me at the station - after a year of chatting on A/R we finally met! Sylvie had scouted out a cool B & B for me to stay in ~ Indian Grove B & B that wouldn't be too far from Rachel's new place in Little Italy.....

I've always had a soft spot for Victorian Homes - and Antiques - and this place had it all! Right next door to Toronto's famous 'High Park'.........and only a 15 minute streetcar/subway ride to the heart of Toronto.
