paying it forward: Helping Animals and People Both - 12/31/14 12:36 AM
Helping Animals and People Both
Liz has always had a soft spot (and then some) for animals.  We've never NOT had at least a pet (or more) in our almost 30 years of marriage. Visiting potential clients to talk about selling a home and that cat or dog that doesn't like ANYONE will probably be nosing around wanting to be petted.  We've become the home for stray cats to find and we have two rescue Chihuahuas (Bunny & Tido) to go along with our unofficial cat rescue.
One thing seems to lead to another in life, and so is the story … (48 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Another Pint of Red Blood Cells On Their Way! - 02/25/12 10:59 PM
Paying It Forward:  Another Pint of Red Blood Cells On Their Way!
I'd fallen off the wagon so to speak with my blood donations.  The winter donations always seem to be more troublesome, with either my eligibility running into the Christmas vacation time frame, followed by two weeks of fighting a cold, then some business travel and before you know it, it's February!
Well this week I got to relax in the portable chaise lounge long enough to give Hoxworth Blood Center a pint of blood for the patients in need.  I'm A- blood, so that puts me in … (15 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Sometimes It's A New Tradition! - 01/29/12 01:37 AM
Paying It Forward:  Sometimes It's A New Tradition! We've got friends that participate in regular fundraisers.  Once a year they get on their bikes and ride, or strap on their running shoes and pound the pavement for mile after mile!  We're not runners so you're not likely to find us out there, but we can still support them by donating to their causes.  Fighting cancer?  You bet we're onboard with that (you know we've got personal motivation on that one as John continues to beat brain cancer).  Leukemia & Lymphoma fighting?  We'll support that one too!
As you know, we've got … (14 comments)

paying it forward: Paying If Forward: Killing Bugs! - 01/01/12 03:58 AM
Paying If Forward:  Killing Bugs! Christmas holidays don't always follow the expected agenda!  When visiting relatives we sometimes find that there's some place we can apply our unique skill sets to help our hosts.
In this case, the bugs weren't the typical creepy crawly things you find under a rock, but the creepy crawly things that go deep into a computer.  Yep, a nasty little hijack program that was swiping Google search results and taking the searches to shopping and information sites that had nothing to do with the actual search results.  And the desktop icons were gone and the C: … (17 comments)

paying it forward: Paying If Forward: More Kitty Donations to Ohio Alleycat Resource - 12/18/11 02:49 AM
Paying If Forward:  More Kitty Donations to Ohio Alleycat Resource  Yes, I know we may come off as the crazy cat people of Warren County!  We've always been animal people with a variety of different furry pets over the decades, and for now, it's cats.  They find us, we take care of them. The last family of kitties that adopted us, well the dad cat is still hanging around and yes, he is using the insulated shelter we built for him.  Mom cat went AWOL (maybe she went back to a previous home?), and of the three kittens, Ohio Alleycat Resource … (15 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Goodwill Towards Goodwill & Others! - 12/11/11 08:00 AM
Paying It Forward:  Goodwill Towards Goodwill & Others! 'Tis the season!  Bells are ringing!  Can you hear them?  If so, chances are it's the Salvation Army folks ringing their bell for the kettle!  Now my philosophy is simple on that.  If they can stand their freezing their Christmas buns off, the least I can do is drop a little something in the kettle! And our local food pantries are in need of help, so a few extra dollars at Kroger's to the Shared Harvest organization is easy.  We tend more towards lots of small trips to the grocer rather than a … (15 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Two Trees For The Troops Please! - 12/04/11 08:25 AM
Paying It Forward:  Two Trees For The Troops Please! A couple of days ago we wrote about a local nursery and landscaping company stepping up to the plate and sponsoring a Trees for Troops program.  Grandma's Gardens in Waynesville had a goal of 120 trees for the troops.  Now perhaps it was the rainy day, or perhaps enough folks just don't KNOW about the program (we're going with the latter), it looks like they're going to fall at least 20 trees short of their goal with tomorrow scheduled for the FEDEX pickup.  Hopefully quite a few more people contributed after our … (12 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Another Week of This and That! - 11/27/11 01:22 AM
Paying It Forward:  Another Week of This and That! It was a different kind of week for us with the Thanksgiving holiday.  We don't make it out of town every year, so it was nice to take some extra time on each side of holiday and hit the highway to visit our families in Maryland and West Virginia.  Who knew that leaving town would open up some opportunities?
Within a couple of hours of arriving at Liz's family in Maryland, their well water pressure inexplicably dropped.  Uh oh.  Then back up, then back down.  Now I'm no plumber, and certainly not … (19 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Building A Cathouse - 11/20/11 09:45 AM
Paying It Forward:  Building A Cathouse HEY!!!  Get your mind out of the gutter!!  That's not LEGAL in Ohio!!  Nope, this cathouse isn't some bordello, but a winter shelter for an outside feral cat that has kind of adopted us.  We call him B.P. or Beepers, he calls us "Where's My Kibble??".  He's the dad of the kittens we socialized this summer and placed for adoption.  He's "fixed", so he won't be contributing to the local feline population any longer.
But winter is coming and if he's not ever going to be an indoor cat (and he won't, our inside cats … (26 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Helping Thanksgiving Be More Thankful - 11/13/11 01:06 AM
Paying It Forward:  Helping Thanksgiving Be More Thankful One of the things I like about my day job is the community focus.  It's NOT just about making surgical devices, but also about making a positive impact on the community and the world.  United Way is heavily promoted, we may only have about 1200 employees, but we're consistently top 5 in Cincinnati area corporate giving, and always #1 in community projects performed.  Blood drives are important too, with frequent on-site opportunities.
And of course this time of year, the focus gets really local, with smaller departmental projects to adopt a family … (18 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Sponsoring Care Facilities Harvest Day - 11/06/11 10:34 AM
Paying It Forward:  Sponsoring Care Facilities Harvest Day Today our church (Christ's Church at Mason) offered us another opportunity to Pay It Forward.  Thursday November 10th at noon they're hosting a Harvest Day for area Senior Adults residing in local area Nursing Care Centers and Assisted Care Centers.  The section of our church that takes care of this event is called Evergreen (a pretty cool name for a seniors group don't you think?).
So what's involved?  Church members provide transportation to bring these seniors to our church for a hot cooked meal and this year the program includes music by the … (12 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Active Rain Is ALL About Paying It Forward - 10/30/11 02:31 AM
Paying It Forward:  Active Rain Is ALL About Paying It Forward We don't think anyone who logs into Active Rain the first time intuitively knows what to do.  Maybe if they took an Active Rain University Class or were lucky enough to have someone sponsor them and take them under their wing, then they got a good start.
But most of you were probably like us.  We joined, and didn't really know a thing we didn't learn by watching and asking.  To us, Active Rain epitomizes the Pay It Forward culture.  We've NEVER had someone not answer a question on how … (23 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Sponsoring More Bears for "His Hands Bear Ministry" - 10/23/11 07:34 AM
Paying It Forward:  Sponsoring More Bears for "His Hands Bear Ministry" Twice a year our church holds an adopt-a-bear program.  Now these aren't the furry wildlife kind, they're actually VERY tame and comforting.  The senior group at our church (Christ's Church at Mason) has a very neat outreach program called "His Hands Bear Ministry".  Once a month they get together and make dozens and dozens of little stuffed bears. Each is truly unique, different fabric, vests, hats, ties and various costume items.  They literally make HUNDREDS of these little bears every year!
And these bears have a mission, and are on … (16 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Maybe He Was A Panhandler, Maybe He Wasn't! - 10/16/11 03:12 AM
Paying It Forward:  Maybe He Was A Panhandler, Maybe He Wasn't! My day job had me on a little road trip this week, up to Allentown, PA.  Now getting there left me a few travel options, they do have their own airport, but from Cincinnati to there required connections and extra time, OR I could fly direct into Philly!  We lived in Philly back in 1986-88 as my ship, USS Garcia FF1040, underwent a "13 month" overhaul that turned out to be a lot longer!  With only a little over an hour drive from Philly to Allentown, and the opportunity to … (27 comments)

Paying It Forward:  Contributing to Five Buck Fix at Ohio Alleycat Resource
If you read us, you know we have cats, and that we even had more cats until recently.  Thanks for the Ohio Alleycat Resource & Spay/Neuter Clinic, the three feral kittens we socialized are now being actively adopted out for a home.  O.A.R. has Copy, Paste & Cleo, and they've got their "mug shots" up on Petfinder.com to help with the placement.
Now you may not know that October 16th is National Feral Cat Day.   As you're aware, cats and rabbits have more in common than just … (18 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Time To Do Something Gruesome! - 10/02/11 02:33 AM
Paying It Forward:  Time To Do Something Gruesome! It's October!  The Haunted Houses are open, the TV will be running more horror movies then you'd ever want to watch, so why not do something with BLOOD for our Pay It Forward this week?
Okay, so maybe it's not really gruesome  for me to give blood last week (you know I'm a regular donor), but to some folks that needle seems to be as scary as Jason's machete or Freddy's fingers!  But wielded by the skilled hands of the Hoxworth Blood Center technicians, you're as safe as you could be!  Honestly, … (28 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: The Kittens Are Ready For Their New Home! - 09/25/11 02:35 AM
Paying It Forward:  The Kittens Are Ready For Their New Home!
Friday was the day.  After close to three months since first having a stray cat bring her three little kittens out from under our deck, we've been working towards finding them a new home.
We captured mom, the three kittens (Cleo, Copy & Paste) and eventually dad cat too.  We took them all to a local cat rescue clinic Ohio Alleycat Resource (OAR) in Cincinnati to get spayed/neutered, shots and parasite treatments, then brought them back home.
Initially we just expected to do the trap and release (TNR).  … (29 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Supporting Visionaries & Voices - 09/18/11 01:33 AM
Paying It Forward:  Supporting Visionaries & Voices Yesterday we posted about our favorite hair salon Lucid holding an Art & Beauty Night to feature Visionaries and Voices (V&V).  V&V is a non-profit organization working with disabled artists who create what is known as "outsider art".  In essence, these artists have no formal training and do their own thing.  They have outstanding creativity and produce some unique work that you'd be proud to have hanging on your home's walls!
So after meeting with a potential listing and then working on our own landscaping late afternoon & early evening (15 plants in the … (25 comments)

Paying It Forward:  The Kitchen Counter Has To Go!
Sometimes when you're selling a home, the road to closing is a little bumpy.  The buyer has the entitlement mentality, seems like every request isn't a request, but more a demand.  My way or the highway.
Part of our jobs with our clients is to try to minimize that type of behavior.  Some agents are better than others at bringing their clients to rational behavior, and some clients, well there's just NOT going to be any checking up their behavior.  They are who they are, deal with it, they're … (21 comments)

paying it forward: Paying It Forward: Donating to Hurricane Irene Relief - 09/04/11 09:58 AM
Paying It Forward:  Donating to Hurricane Irene Relief While the effects of Hurricane Irene aren't directly felt here in Cincinnati for the most part, the world is much smaller than it used to be.  We know people up and down the East Coast, some friends, some relatives.  We've been fortunate and none were seriously impacted and for the most part just inconvenienced.  Bill's brother Joe & family live in Virginia Beach, so they packed up and headed to Lynchburg to wait it out with friends.  Bill's sister Debbie and his two nieces live near Petersburg, VA.  Now fortunately the nieces were … (7 comments)
