north carolina: Southern Hospitality in the wake of a Tornado- Raleigh NC - 04/18/11 01:58 PM
It doesn't matter where you live, there seems to be some extreme weather situations that make the news. No earthquakes or tsunamis here in North Carolina, and very rarely do we have extreme winter conditions. Even tornadoes and hurricanes don't happen every year. But last weekend North Carolina was hit hard! Here in the Raleigh NC area we had a string of tornadoes run through our area Saturday afternoon. Starting around 3:00 the TV channels broke into regular programming with extreme weather alerts. Or, as they're now calling them PDS- for particularly dangerous situations! From watching the TV satellite pictures, we

north carolina: Wordless Wednesday- When will the sun come out? - 05/26/10 04:29 PM
It's been raining a little lately in the Raleigh Cary Apex area of North Carolina. In fact, according to the the National Weather Service, we've had 1.33 inches of rain from Saturday night to Monday morning. Now, that may not seem like a lot, but added to the 4 inches of rain we had last week, you can see why my "lawn" now looks like a mud puddle. The rain cooled the air down so much that steam was rising from the ground! The old saying goes April showers bring May flowers. Well, May flowers are already blooming like crazy, so

north carolina: Spring came "Marching" in like a Lamb in North Carolina. - 03/01/10 03:29 PM
March came in like a lamb today in the Apex Cary area of North Carolina. Although those pessimistic weather people are calling for a "wintry mix" again for tomorrow and Wednesday, today the forsythia were starting to bloom and the sun was shining. Notice our "Carolina blue" sky? By the end of March here in Raleigh going out like a lion usually means a rainstorm to help make the flowers grow.

north carolina: Southern Snow- an unusual Silent Sunday here in North Carolina - 01/31/10 03:43 PM
It was so quiet out, barely even the sound of snow crunching under my feet, when I went out this morning to take pictures of the snow. It's a fairly rare occurrence here in Apex North Carolina to have measurable snow. We didn't have any snow last year. To all you people up North and in Colorado (Mary!), you can laugh at us because this few inches of snow grinds the area to a hault. BUT, school has already been cancelled for tomorrow and businesses are closed. Yep, we just wait until it melts and hibernate. Ahh, sleeping in late, reading a good book, and

north carolina: Foreclosure Homes in Cary North Carolina - 01/27/10 11:48 AM
Everyone's looking for a bargain these days, and here in Cary, North Carolina buyers are no exception. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately for the bargain hunters, because we didn't have the huge percentage of appreciation that was felt in New York, California, and Florida a few years ago, we also now aren't feeling a big depreciation either. These facts tell the story that we don't have a huge supply of foreclosures in the Triangle area of North Carolina, but we do have them!! Right now in Cary, there are 14 homes listed as either foreclosures or in the foreclosure process. These Foreclosed

north carolina: Come in from the Cold, this is Winter in North Carolina - 01/25/10 04:28 PM
The 4 Seasons of North Carolina After a couple of weeks of unusually cold weather throughout the country, and in the South particularly, we here in Apex, North Carolina, had a few days of warm rain last week. And then, finally on Saturday, it was sunny, warm, and bright! You'd think we Southerner's had been trapped in the house for months. People were out with their kids, dogs, friends, and lovers, walking through the trails at the park and sitting on the benches enjoying the day. Yes, we do have winter in North Carolina. However, it's not the frigid cold, deep snow,

north carolina: An Autumn Day in North Carolina, Lake Wheeler Park - 10/29/09 11:19 AM
A day at Lake Wheeler Park Lake Wheeler Park, part of the City of Raleigh parks system, was developed in the 1950's and has grown into a wonderful place for families and friends to share the outdoors. With many picnic tables and grills for free use for the public, as well as nature trails, fishing, and playgrounds, there is much to do here. History:Lake Wheeler serves as Raleigh's secondary auxiliary water supply, and this 800-acre lake park (650 acres of lake; 150 acres of park and land buffer) has rapidly become a favorite capital city getaway... . In 1958, Lake Wheeler was

north carolina: Wake County September Housing Market Report - 10/26/09 08:59 AM
It's the middle of October and here in the Triangle area of North Carolina we've had our first frost warning The leaves are starting to turn colors as the weather cools off from the heat of August. Autumn has always been my favorite season, and living in North Carolina is especially enjoyable. In the Real Estate market, the last 2 months have been extremely HOT with first time home buyers hurrying to meet that November 30 deadline to qualify for the $8000 tax credit. Because of this, homes priced in the lower price range, or under $200,000, were selling well. Looking at the chart below of residential sales for resale homes in Wake

north carolina: Silent Sunday- Lake Wheeler Park, Raleigh North Carolina - 10/25/09 01:38 PM
It's a bright, cloudy, cool, lovely fall day, the first weekend day since the leaves started to change that it's not raining. A perfect day for a walk in the park While the crowds are enjoying the last day of the State Fair, barely 5 miles away, my husband, granddog, and I were enjoying the peacefulness of Lake Wheeler. Not a sound was heard except the crunching of leaves under our feet as we walked. Even the swimming ducks were silent.

north carolina: Up Up and Away at Terrington in Raleigh NC - 10/09/09 03:48 PM
With high end homes sales still soft in the Real Estate Market here in North Carolina, as well as most of the country, it takes something different to get agents to visit the communities. Last weekend the onsite sales team at Terrington in the Raleigh Cary area of North Carolina held a truly unique Broker's event by inviting a select number of agents for a HOT AIR BALLOON ride! Since I had previously visited this beautiful community, talked to the builder, Jay Summers and wrote a blog on it, I was one of the lucky one to be invited. My husband and I

north carolina: Cary North Carolina Summer Market Report and Statistics - 09/08/09 01:31 PM
The Labor Day holiday is over and the kids are back to school, so it's time to see how the housing market faired this summer here in Cary North Carolina. These numbers were provided by the Triangle Multiple Listing Service. While the number of homes for sale and under contract held pretty steady for the past three months, the number of homes sold (closed) in August went down drastically. Hopefully the number of homes that went under contract in August will result in more closed sales for September. The Good News for home values is that the average

north carolina: Apex Rocks! Something old is new in Crowder Park, North Carolina - 09/07/09 10:42 AM
I've written many times about Crowder Park in Apex, North Carolina. Part of the Wake County Parks System, this 33 acres of land off Ten Ten Rd was donated by the Crowder family in 1992 to be used for the enjoyment of the people as a park. Filled with walking/running trails, a pond, playgrounds, picnic areas as well as natural areas, Crowder park is a favorite of the residents for miles around. You'll often see families with their little children on the tricycles and playground equipment, groups of people holding a barbecue in one of the three shelters, and every kind of dog imaginable being walked

north carolina: Wake County North Carolina July Housing Market Report - 08/26/09 01:02 PM
It's hard to believe that summer is almost over and the weather is ready to turn cooler again. This year has brought many changes in the Real Estate market too. Whether or not you're thinking about buying a new home or selling your present home, almost everyone is interested in what the Real Estate market is doing in these volatile times. More specifically- you probably want to know how these changes relate to the value of your home in the Raleigh area or your ability to buy a home here. You may have heard the old saying "the 3 most important

north carolina: Monday Musing- How do you answer "Where are you from?" - 08/03/09 02:49 PM
I had posted a picture a few weeks ago on my blog showing a beach and making it a game- where was this taken? I had several comments guessing North Carolina, because that's "where I'm from." The last person who used that quote "that's where I'm from" got me thinking- where am I really from? How do people answer that nowadays? Do you say "You're From" where you were born? Where you grew up? Where you spent many years as an adult? Or do you answer that "You're From" where you live now? What if you just moved in to your
