things to do in san diego: Dog Park in Carmel Valley - 10/24/10 08:06 PM
Looking to have some fun with your dog?  The Carmel Valley Dog Park is the place to be!   The dog park officially opened in 2002, but in 2004 was made permanent by the Carmel Valley Community Planning Board.  One my friends, Lisa DeLucchi, helped create the park, (pictured here with Reese & Holden) along with other dedicated dog lovers.  The park is located northeast of the Torrey Pines High School and behind the facilities building.
Torrey Highlands Dog Park is popular and visited often by local residents of Carmel Valley. It's a real treat to come to this park providing a chance to get outside … (7 comments)

things to do in san diego: Miramar Air Show 2010 - Out of the Ordinary - 10/07/10 07:01 PM
For someone who likes to take pictures, the Miramar Air Show is as close to heaven as you can get.  I took over 500 photos and have had an incredible time going through them to find my favorites.   For me, some of the best shots are ones that are simply interesting, not for their perfection but for their unusual and out of the ordinary perspectives or simply because they make you look at them twice.  Here are a few of those from the show:

things to do in san diego: Wings of An Angel - Miramar Air Show 2010 - 10/07/10 11:11 AM
The Miramar Air Show not only captures incredible sights and sounds of the military and aviation industry, but it also demonstrates how patriotic most of us are and how proud we are to be Americans.  From the singing of the National Anthem, the young soldiers assisting us through the base, and the flag waving spectators... this land is our land and I am grateful for those who risk their lives to protect and defend us.  God bless America.  I dedicate these pictures to those pilots past and present who soared on the "wings of an angel"...

things to do in san diego: Canadian Snowbirds - 10/06/10 11:48 AM
Canadian Snowbirds to those of us in real estate, usually means the Canadians that come down to our sun belts during the winter season.  In the desert many of our buyers were "Canadian Snowbirds" and we always looked forward to greeting our neighbors from the north!
On Friday at the Miramar Air Show, the Canadians were proudly represented by nine of their best pilots performing for us.  The Canadian Forces Snowbirds is an Air Force squadron that has been performing at air shows for forty years.
As an American Air Force brat and spectator of many military air shows, I can … (4 comments)

things to do in san diego: Boeing Harrier at the Miramar Air Show 2010 - 10/06/10 10:07 AM
Wow!  If you have never seen one of these planes in action, it is probably the most jaw dropping display of a specialized aircraft's capabilities that I have ever seen.  The AV-8B Harrier, also called a Jump Jet, is a short take-off, vertical landing tactical strike aircraft.  Reaching speeds up to Mach 1, this plane is something out of the future.  The video below was taken using my flip video camera and is not as clear as I would have liked, but it shows you the versatility of this plane and is well worth viewing the 2 minute clip.

things to do in san diego: Shockley's Jet Truck & Napalm Drop at Miramar Air Show 2010 - 10/06/10 08:28 AM
One of the highlights of the "ground" show at Miramar Air Show this weekend was Kent Shockley's "ShockWave".  This triple engine, Peterbilt truck is said to be capable of 36,000 hp at the speed of sound.  This vehicle has more than enough fire power and reaches speeds of 300 mph!

I grew up during the Vietnam era and many of my friends went into the military and fought in Vietnam.  I was told about napalm attacks, but had never really seen one.  The Miramar Air Show demonstrated a napalm drop and although the target was in the distance there isn't … (7 comments)

things to do in san diego: Miramar Air Show 2010 - A Tradition of Uncommon Valor - 10/05/10 09:32 PM
This year the Miramar Air Show 2010 was held on October 1 - 3rd in San Diego and its theme was, "Marines, A Tradition of Uncommon Valor".  My family decided to surprise me for my birthday with Observation Deck Chalet tickets for Friday's performance.  While the day started out foggy, it cleared up in the afternoon and the Chalet was a treat.  On every table there were free programs, ear plugs, flavored chapsticks, and bottles of ice cold flavored Vitamin water were available in coolers.  It was a perfect day, lots of exciting things to see and my camera was ready … (3 comments)

things to do in san diego: Hot Cars in Coronado - 10/03/10 10:04 PM
Last Sunday we took a drive over to Coronado to Fleet Week's Speed Festival and as we were crossing over the bridge we saw a small auto show at Tideland Park.  The annual Camaro Car Show was being held from 9 am to 2 pm and hosted by the San Diego Camaro Car Club.  Not only were there some great looking muscle cars, but all makes and models were welcome.  Here are some photos from the event.

things to do in san diego: Shelter Island in San Diego - 09/29/10 02:58 PM
Shelter Island in San Diego is one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego to view boats, the downtown horizon and the waterfront community.  Although not actually an "island" because it is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land, Shelter Island was developed in the 1950s and has hotels, restaurants, marinas and beautiful public parks.
Shelter Island also is home to the "Tunaman's Memorial", a large life-like bronze sculpture by Franco Vianello which is dedicated to the courageous local tuna fishermen who were part of the legacy of tuna fishermen in San Diego.  The marble plaque reads, … (0 comments)

The 13th Annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival was held at the Naval Air Station North Island this past weekend.  The Speed Festival featured over 200 of the world's top racing cars competing on a 1.7 mile course, which was built on top of an active Naval runway.  There was an enthusiastic crowd watching the day long racing events and touring the military displays and navy ship tours.
My family loves military events and always try to honor and celebrate the men and women of the military by attending Fleet Week and other celebrations... looking forward to this weekend's Miramar Air … (2 comments)

things to do in san diego: Camp Cuyamaca Outdoor School in Descanso, California - 09/20/10 02:09 PM
On our way back from lunch in Julian we stopped by Camp Cuyamaca in Descanso.  Camp Cuyamaca is where every sixth grader in San Diego public schools is provided the opportunity to spend a week under the leadership of trained camp counselors and their classroom teachers.  It is an opportunity for the students to explore the outdoors and is truly an adventure away from their families (many for the first time) and is a great learning experience in nature.
My children and husband attended Camp Cuyamaca, as did thousands of San Diego sixth graders, over the past 60 years of … (4 comments)

things to do in san diego: As American as Apple Pie in Julian, California - 09/20/10 11:58 AM
On Sunday my family and I took a drive up the mountains to visit Julian, California.  Julian is an old fashioned mining town in the east county of San Diego and known for the finest apples in Southern California.
Our main purpose for the trip was to start our "Fall Season" with a piece of Julian apple pie.  Thousands of people visit Julian the months of September through November for this taste treat.  We patiently stood in line at the Julian Pie Company for our pieces of Dutch apple pie slightly warmed with ice cream and topped with caramel sauce, a slice … (3 comments)

This year Julian is celebrating its 140th anniversary that first brought farmers, families and miners up to the mountains of San Diego County in search of riches.  While Julian was home to the 1870 gold strike, it is now best known for its apples.
Julian is most popular from mid-September until mid-November with the apple harvest season providing entertainment for all ages.  The Julian Apple Days Festival will be October 2nd and 3rd this year.  Activities scheduled include pie baking contest, children's activities with magicians and clowns, apply displays, town tours and vendor booths.

Lake Cuyamaca is a small San Diego County lake that is popular with San Diego residents who love to fish.  This 110 acre lake contains catfish, crappie, bluegill, bass, sturgeon and trout.  There is a local bait and tackle shop with helpful Park Rangers, be sure to ask them for the best fishing spots and bait tips!  Beautiful scenery and only about an hour drive east of downtown San Diego... well worth the trip!

things to do in san diego: Balboa Park Attractions Not on the List - 09/02/10 02:08 PM
Balboa Park has so many sights/sites to visit that sometimes you just need to sit down to decide where to go next and what to see.  And sometimes.... sitting down on a park bench provides you even more interesting entertainment than the museums and manufactured attractions.  For instance watching the trick bikes was thrilling and the Segway riders were simply amusing.  I consider these Balboa Park attractions not on the list and free entertainment!

things to do in san diego: Balboa Park in San Diego, CA - 09/02/10 01:40 PM
Balboa Park is considered the nation's largest urban cultural park and is home to 14 museums, the Old Globe, stunning gardens and the world famous, San Diego Zoo.  There are so many attractions that one day is not enough to visit them all.  There is a special "Stay for the Day Pass", which includes admittance to five of any of the 14 museums for only $35.  Until September 6th, you can tour the San Diego Zoo at night - a special treat and there is a special exhibit of "Tequila Bottles as Art" running until January 2, 2011.  Something for everyone!  … (5 comments)

things to do in san diego: What is going on at the San Diego Air & Space Museum? - 09/02/10 12:11 PM
Yesterday was another beautiful day in San Diego and I decided to head over to Balboa Park to walk around to see what is new.  One of my favorite museums at Balboa Park is the San Diego Air & Space Museum and while taking a photo of the front of it, a plane, on its descent to land at Lindbergh Field, passed over head.
I simply don't have a caption for this photo... it is one of those times that when I look at it there are too many quirky thoughts racing through my mind and it leaves me... speechless.
