Just the other day, I read a shocking story about a beach resort area in Italy. Apparently, two young girls had drowned and their bodies were recovered and laid on the beach, awaiting pickup by the morgue. Vacationers continued to drink, chat and enjoy themselves just a few feet from the dead girls as if they were not there. I feel sorry for those people, actually. How awful it must be to to be so uncaring.
Quite another story in Fort Myers today. A police officer killed in late July on a domestic violence call was laid to rest today. The streets were lined with people as the funeral procession passed. Business people gave up their lunch hour to honor the fallen officer. Mothers, children, students, the people of Fort Myers lined the route of the funeral procession.
His name was Andrew Widman. He was 30 years old. He left a wife and three children.
Fort Myers Beach councilmen are going through another delicate issue: should the beach be re nourished? Should they use the opportunity to get a $10 million dollars fund from the government to help re nourish the beach? The citizens are divided and they have to make a decision before 2010.Otherwise they loose these funds.
Beach frontage owners are concerned, and you cannot blame them.If the island goes along the Federal funding, they will have to follow their rules. That may mean that many owners may loose some land, that is, the town will then own any re-nourished part of the beach even if its on someone property. Perhaps it is more of a fear then an actually fact but I have talked to quite a few beach property owners and they do believe they will loose some land towards the shore line.
Some believe, and they are not property beach owners that a Fort Myers Beach re-nourishmentis due. Both have complete different views: One thinks that the beach is loosing grounds and the other thinks that the beach has gained ground. Its amazing how one can change geological data when it serves your purpose. I think it should be done and yes they should add dunes and beach vegetation to slow down the erosion, but I am not a beach frontage owner. I think I would vote for it anyway. If it protects your home and you can't build within a certain amount of feet from the shore line anyway, it might be the right price to pay. Beautify the beach and protect its homes is the way to go. But, lets be real here, they should then have their property re-assessed and pay less taxes accordingly to the loss of land.

PBS is often considered elitist, or boring, or both, but there's actually some hysterical programs. For instance, Keeping UP Appearances. The setting for the this show is a long way off, geographically as well as socially, from Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
This British comedy centers on Hyacinth Bucket, which she always pronounces as "Bouquet." She's a middle ageed, middle class woman, who has three sisters, the poor Daisy, married to the boorish Onslow, who hasn't worked ever. the sexy Rose and Violet, the sister who married rich and in Hyacinth's words has a "Mercedes, Sauna and room for a pony". Violet is unhappily married to the cross-dressing Bruce.
Hyacinth will answer her phone saying: "The Bouquet residence, the lady of the house speaking", and from her shining kitchen to the well polished windows, her home is a perfect, perfectly clean, that is; constantly warning her visitors not to brush up against the walls, she tells them to remove their shoes on arrival. Her long-suffering and hen-pecked husband is Richard, who initially works for the local coucil Later in the series he reluctantly takes early retirement. Richard often tries in vain to stop Hyacinth in her snobbish endeavors, but she never listens to him nor anyone else. He regularly gets dragged into assisting his wife in her numerous attempts at climbing the social ladder, despite reluctance to do so.
The couple have an unseen son, Sheridan, who makes frequent phone calls from his trade school, (one which Hyacinth claims is "of university standard"), asking for money. There are strong suggestions that Sheridan is homosexual, however Hyacinth seems blissfully unaware of this.
Hyacinth's father, who lives with Onslow, Daisy and Rose, "Daddy." chases elderly women and frequently believes he is back in World War II. Despite Hyacinth's desire for "upper-crust" relatives, she loves her family dearly, and never fails to rush to their assistance when they need her help. Often it is Daddy that has got into an embarrassing situation which Hyacinth has to always solve.
Hyacinth's next-door neighbour is Elizabeth Warden, who's frequently invited round to the Buckets' for coffee. Liz gets nervous in her neighbor's house, often causing her to spill the coffee, to the horror of Hyacinth. Liz's brother Emmett arrives sometime in the middle of this series to live with her after a messy divorce. Emmett runs a local amateur operatic society, and Hyacinth frequently drops hints by singing, that he should include her in the performances. Thus Emmett quickly develops a fear for Hyacinth to such an extent that he's terrified of leaving the house, fearing he'll be sung at. Hyacinth, however, is under the impression that Emmett is attracted to her, yet the only character who is attracted to Hyacinth is the lecherous Major, who comes in and out of the series.
That is one of the reasons I enjoy Fort Myers Beach, there aren't many characters "Keeping Up Appearances" on the island. Granted, we have our share of full fledged excentric residents, and perhaps that is a compliment and a blessing.

I am usually not so enthusiastic about a community. Granted many are great in South West Florida, but something does not click fully in your mind. It could be the price, not enough amenities, to far from the beach, the architecture is good but not great, the interiors are cramped, or the pool is to small. This one stands outs. Located in South Fort Myers, Laguna Lakes is about 6 miles from Fort Myers Beach and has so much to offer.Towhouses start at $160,000 for 1800 square feet with 3 bedrooms or 2 bedrooms and den.

Many were gathered earlier on to see a majestic red orange sunset along the shores of Fort Myers Beach, but its the moon which caught my attention at 11:01 pm. For these who want to know where Fort Myers Beach Florida is located here is its longitude and latitude. Boaters and pilots can recognize the following:
Latitude 26.27 N Longitude 81.57 W
I enjoy checking the weather channel for Fort Myers Beach. I still don't know how a friend of ours does not live without ac, nor cares to have ac. I suppose its a question of getting used to it. Its not like she cannot buy an ac system. I set my thermostat usually pretty high around 77, because I don't like the changes of temperature from the outside to the inside. We all have our tricks in the Tropics.
To come back to our moon.It is full but hazy and powerful looking at 11:01 p.m. Yes, it was romantic. I heard that in Key West they have a Full Moon Party. Its also very busy in town. The moon brings people together again.

This picture was taken after my wife Karen and Miss Mimi came back from a beach run In Fort Myers Beach.Mimi is very exuberant and full of energy and I can tell you from experience that she can run awfully fast.In fact to fast.
Mimi is a rescue dog, part Rhodesian and I believe boxer. These 2 have been already been running 3 to 4 times a week for the last 3 months and they have created this bond one has after one has shared something special.By chance I caught them when they were saying something to each other. I run with her once in awhile but I have no intention of keeping up with her 6 mn mile speed. I could break my neck. Miss Mimi probably thinks its funny.
Miss Mimi did start as my assistant this week and is already showing some talents. I think she already wants a food raise and more time off to sniff around.

Investors, potential buyers from the USA, Canada and Europe often ask me if there are any single homes short sales in Fort Myers Beach. There are not many. The following are six of the few available as of July 17,2008.
The prices range from a low for the beach of $229K to an upscale home at $674,900. Lately, even lenders as Wells Fargo and Contrywide have change their tune and are more willing to "negotiate:.Its about time. Ppurchasinga short sale home is not as complicated as it used to be only some 6 months ago. Some lenders have cut down the short sale package drastically and low and behold, even will tell you what their bottom line price will be with an offer. About time! Either way, if you are working with an agent who has done them before and has been able to close on them, the chances are on your side.
In brief if you can buy a good short sale in Fort Myers, its certainly a very attractive way be an owner these days. I have seen banks responding to offers within 3 weeks. Nobody is crazy about them but they are not as bad as it seems. They are great opportunities. They are some of the better Fort Myers Beach home deals.

CALUSA PALMS Located in Southwest Fort Myers on A & W Bulb rd, South West of McGrergor Blvd, Calusa Palms is one of my favorite gated community. It is a gated community with 146 single homes and 184 carriages homes. Its is situated only 6 miles to the Fort Myers Beach and also about 15 mn drive to Sanibel Island.
The privacy and calm of the road and area as you drive from Gladiolus is one of the reasons I always enjoy showing homes at Calusa. Amenities include a 2400 sf community center, fitness center, swimming pool, play area, tennis courts, putting green and bocce court. Many of the homes are circling around man made lakes, and enjoy water views. Something is going on In Cape Coral, Florida. Sales are up dramatically and are matching 2006 for 2008. Why is that? You can buy affordablea Cape CoralGULF ACCESShomes for under $230,000. Did you hear this right? Yes, you did.
The following homes are not all turn key but they have more then potential to make a great new home. I will not tell you stories. These homes may need some upgrading. Yes, they do.Still they caught my eyes because they are Cape Coralwaterfront homes, are in a good area and are decent looking. In fact with a bit of upgrading they could be very attractive homes. They are the kind of homes investors or buyers who are looking for a deal.Don't except granite counter tops. But you will be surprised. These are solid good homes. They are just sound deals in Cape Coral:many have already realized this.
The first one has a new pool cage build in 1967 and yes it has a pool with it.It is offered at under $230K. It has over 1500 square feet with a 2 car garage, an 8,000 boat lift and good location:
The other one is offered at $230,000, 1200 sf, but only 15 mn to the river. That is quite close!Below ground pool, build in 1967, remodeled kitchen and bathroom, 3/2, newer AC, newer windows and a screened pool.11,000 lbs lift. Worth a closer look.
There are many other deals in Cape Coral for these who want a gulf access home. Its a question of looking at them closer. For a list of other deals of gulf accesshomes and a swimming pool in Cape Coral feel, free to contact me.There are quite few out there in Lee County.

Yes, I was one of those men persuaded into watching some of the Miss Universe Pageant by his wife. I don't hate watching it (a lot of pretty ladies to watch, after all), but it's all a bit slow for me. I know that my wife likes the to see the swimsuits, the evening dresses, etc. She's really into clothes. I was, however, struck by Miss U.S.A. falling for the second year on her gown and I cannot help but thinking that this was a case of negative thinking. Perhaps it was stuck in her head that Miss U.S.A. fell last year and she couldn't get it out. I believe that this is a common problem with people, a negative thought sticking in the head and disupting that person's life.
Nothing against MIss U.S.A. She's a pretty lady, and I certainly wouldn't want to second guess the judges on this most important contest, but perhaps they should have chosen Miss Florida to compete in the Miss Universe Contest (see photo below).
