Located mid island, this Fort Myers Beach Short sale is a well built classical island home with a true gulf access canal frontage.
The first floor apartment has been recently remodeled and looks pretty sharp.This was a good surprise. Granite counter, tile floor, redone bathroom.Top floor needs some floor and kitchen upgrading. A bit old fashioned.

This Calendar was made possible by the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce. Some of the events will interest visitors and residents alike, as the Saturday 5th 22nd Fort Myers Beach Annual Christmas Boat Parade which I have witnessed quite a few times and which is a fun even of lights, imagination and whimzical celebration. Some others maybe a big snooze as the Traffic community Meeting of Nov 19th, though highly important.
For these who have never been to our Fort Myers Beach town meetings, I cannot promise high entertainement during these at times painful events, but they do offer invaluable information about our town and at times it may amuse or surprise you. One thing is sure:this year we do have a solid mayor and vice mayor and the amount of work done by our councilmen (one coucilwoman) is quite commendable when you consider the modest pay.
For you golfers I would recommend the Jan 16th 2010 Fort Myers Beach Golf Tournement, which course was completely updated with great success in the last couple of years. Its a short course, affordable and a great way to work on your 3 or 4 woods,short irons and of course short game. Lots of fun and it does not take 4 hours to complete. Great way to meet people and mix it up with the locals.
I have never been to the annual decorating event but I think my wife would enjoy it and I might learn a few tips on how to match my clothes. I am guessing there would be quite a lot of local flavor. Great way to talk with our residents.

Fort Myers Beach Island is located some 26 miles north of Naples, 25 mn to the airport,15 mn to Sanibel, 15 mn to Cape Coral. It is an independent community with a major island of seven miles by half a mile to one mile wide. The beach is as long as the island itself. It is a well known semi resort island with a history dating back to the Calusa Indians some 1450 BC. It is situated in Southwest Florida and is known for its friendly residents and scenic beauty. The town’s population varies from 6,000 off season to 30,000 in the peak season in winter.The major Island is called Estero island.
Southwest Florida is well known for its miles of white sand. It is part of our life style, our culture and many come to the beaches of Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel,Captiva, Bonita Springs and Naples for many different reason.
Being a resident of Fort Myers Beach, you would except that I would pick its beach as one of my favorites. You are right. Not only it is one of the safest beaches in Florida but they allow dogs. The beach is seven miles long.
Perhaps the attractions is that one may be at a restaurant, a bar, Parasail or ski jet or play volley ball at Fort Myers Beach and enjoy the scenery and take a dip.There is a lot to do. Sections towards the northern part of the island were renourished in the summer of 2009 and indeed it looks good. The pier located just towards downtown Fort Myers Beach is also a great fishing spot and you may enjoy the view from a few restaurants smack on the gulf side.
Another favorite is a bit out of the way at Sanibel Bowman’s Beach. Sanibel is well known for its green philosophy and if you want to enjoy nature at its most bare and untouched then this beach is for you. Bowman's Beach (blog)
Bonita Beach Park is also a winner.Except for the dog restriction it is also a favorite. Very well kept and recently renovated it goes for miles and miles both on both side and towards Little Hickory Island on the North.
One cannot forget Naples Lowdermilk Beach and Naples beaches in general. It was nourished in the late 90’s. From Gordon Pass on the south to Seagate Drive on the North you will enjoy 10 miles of high quality beaches. I always preferred the area towards the south and Gordon pass for its tranquility. No dogs allowed. You may bike or walk from downtown Naples or Old Naples to the shore.
The quality of the sand dropped when it was renourished and widen but luckily after a few years it is back to its beautiful state and fine sugary white sand. A top beach.
The pier is a favorite meeting and fishing place. Naples plans some more renourishment in the near future.

The orginal tiki huts started some 1450 BC with the Calusa Indians who at the time controlled most of south west Florida. Their influence in tiki building was brought to our Seminole Indians or “run-away-Indians” who transformed the tiki hut. They name this shelter “chickee” which means home in Seminole.
Though these island tikis are highly influenced by the Seminole Indians technique, there are some major differences to the fastening of the timber together to the palms. More modern tikis use different forms of nails and treated woods including waterproofing sealants over the roof.
The Florida Seminole Indians, who were pressed and hounded by American soldiers and push deep into of the Everglades, were master at relocating and moving quickly and that is the reason why these “Seminolechickees” though conformable, were built in such a way that they could be put together or taken apart rapidly. They were meant to be temporary.
Our Florida Indians,by the way, never lost the war against the US soldiers. These master run-a-ways managed to save their culture and people by hiding in the very wild and inhospitable depth of the Everglades. The largest Seminole Communities are still found in the Everglades and manage their own settlements and businesses with independent pride and a fair amount of success. They do not follow the rest of Southwest Florida building codes, unless they want to.
When I look at these Fort Myers Beach tiki huts I think of the long history behind these dwellings. Basic chickees use a thatch of palmettos supported by logs of cypress wood.Only Seminole Indians are allowed and authorized to removed cypress logs from our Floridian marches for building purposes.

The Seminole Indians by the way consisted of a few different related tribes who migrated before the 1750’s to Northern Florida and were pushed deeper in the south by the US soldiers in the 1800’s.

Original chickees had a platform above the ground to protect against insects, animals, and provide more cooling. These days true chickees are built only by Seminole Indians and if hired they do not need to get a construction permit, they do need to follow zoning regulations.

Many homes in Fort Myers Beach and southwest Florida have adopted both of these dwellings on their properties, specially as a sun shelter, or as covered patios and are even seen on docks. They stay very popular.
