minneapolis: Buying in Minneapolis or St. Paul? Let me tell you a little secret... - 01/13/07 09:16 PM
If you're looking for a home within Minneapolis or St. Paul, let me tell you about a grant program that will pay up to 4% of your closing costs.  It's called the City Living Program.  It's a well kept secret.  Many loan officers don't talk about it because they either don't offer it, or don't know about it.  It's a more difficult loan that requires more paperwork, and loan officers typically get paid less on this loan compared with other loans.  Truth is, with the extra money it increases your buying power, and reduces the amount of money you have to bring … (2 comments)

minneapolis: City of Minneapolis and Backflow Preventer Companies are in Cahoots. - 01/13/07 08:42 PM
Selling a home in Minneapolis?  You're required to have a city-approved inspector conduct a Truth in Housing inspection, and they will charge you at least $175 to do it.  They claim it is to "improve the housing stock" in Minneapolis. I say it's a bunch of Hooey. If Minneapolis wanted to improve the housing stock, they would perform actual inspections of homes prior to establishing an "estimated market value" which is how our property taxes are assessed. These inspections would be on a regular basis of each and every home in the city, not just on those that are being put on the market.

minneapolis: Pumpkin Fun - 10/20/06 06:50 AM
OK, Teresa Boardman, I'll enter your virtual pumpkin carving contest.   I've never been very good at working the paint program, so hopfully I'll get a point or two for creativity.
These are my St. Paul and Minneapolis Pumpkins.  The first, representing the many fine  St.Paul Irish establishments I love to frequent.  The second, of course, is the Minnie-apple.The blue line represents the Mississippi River.  While the renderings look like something I would have created at the age of 6, they represent the Twin Cities, and the home I love. OK, go ahead. Tease away :-)

minneapolis: Here today, gone tomorrow - 10/11/06 06:06 AM
When my husband and I moved into our 1949 home 2 1/2 years ago we bought it for the location. There were some contigencies--for my handyman husband.  I wasn't willing to sign on the dotted line until he agreed on a number of things..1) the pink stove and white speckled counter tops HAD to go 2) the bathroom with the little tiles and gold lame wall paper also HAD to go 3) another bedroom needed to be added so I had an office and a place to call my own. Of course, we bought it right and love the location (on Lake Nokomis in … (3 comments)

minneapolis: Arsenic found in Minneapolis Yards - 10/09/06 10:38 AM
While I know I risk duplication of content dings.  This is too important to not share.
700 homes near Hiawatha Avenue and East 28th Street in the Phillips and Longfellow neighborhoods have been found to contain arsenic. Insight News reported on this just this morning.  The EPA is cleaning up yards with "acute" amouts of arsenic which they define as greater than 95 parts per million (95 ppm).  This, so far, has amounted to 200 homes.
Here is what I find so bothersome. First, this particular area has a large number of rental units. Second, the population of those rental units … (1 comments)
