senior housing: Senior Housing Wish List-What do Baby Boomers Want? - 02/03/08 03:14 AM

Open a paper, turn on the TV, or while you're surfing the internet you'll see an article about real estate. Everyone has a prediction about when the real estate market will turn around and no one seems to agree. Let me introduce you to my simple math: In areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul we have about 11 months of inventory on the market. I suspect it will take at least 8 months before we start to see home prices begin normal appreciation (3-7% per year) again.
This conversation bores me. It's like hearing the same song on the radio over … (8 comments)

senior housing: Blogging Opens up New Opportunities. - 12/19/07 12:42 AM
I continue to have opportunities opening up to me thanks to first learning how to blog at ActiveRain in November of 2006.
I've been working hard on my other blog (Real Sage Advice) where I address senior housing and aging issues.  Because of those efforts I've just recently been given my own little corner of the Gilbert Guide blog.  Gilbert Guide has a panel of experts that address aging issues; from long term care insurance, financial planning, cancer treatment, and geriatric care management. NOW they have a Senior Real Estate Specialist to add to their knowledge base.
I'd love to give you a list of "what … (7 comments)

senior housing: Use Research to Talk with Seniors about Moving - 05/10/07 12:57 AM
If you're ever lucky enough to work with a senior and their family you know much of your job becomes reassuring the senior that move *is* possible. It's perfectly normal for seniors to feel overwhelmed with the thought of moving. Often, this is the very thing that keeps them stuck in a home with a ton of deferred maintenance, lonely and isolated.
The mistake families often make with seniors is to try to convince the senior to move. This is a lose-lose proposition. Even if the senior does agree to move, they feel as if they are doing it under coerscion. … (5 comments)

senior housing: Helping a Senior Move Part II - 04/06/07 03:48 AM
Yesterday I wrote about Helping a Senior Move Part I, this is the second chapter, and I'm sure there will be many more!
I just received a phone call from my senior client who, two days ago had decided he wanted to move back home.  Over the last couple of days he has had some important discussions with his family and miraculously, went to visit a senior independent living community.  His family expressed their concern about his returning home and living alone.  He decided (in part, I believe to keep the peace) to move to an independent living community.  He called … (9 comments)

senior housing: Helping a Senior Move isn't about the Listing - 04/04/07 01:20 PM
About 2 months ago I received a phone call from my website to list an elderly gentleman's home.  This gentleman was scheduled to have surgery, spend some time recovering in rehabilitation, then move to an assisted living community.
Today, he's been in his new home for about 1 1/2 weeks. He called me this week and told me he was very unhappy with where he was living, and wanted to move home.  We spent some time talking and I was trying to get a sense if this was a case of buyers remorse (something that would wear off) or if we were really going to … (23 comments)

senior housing: Overcome Senior's Objections to Moving Part III-Deal with the Stuff! - 11/13/06 02:39 AM
If you're lucky enough to work with a senior client, you'll likely be faced with one of the two most common obstacles.  "I don't want a monthly payment" and "Whatever will I do with all this stuff?"  I tackled the financial objection in Overcoming Seniors Objections Part II.  Jay and Medford even put me to the test to see if I could really show seniors how they could save money by moving. Even though there's a new monthly payment, you can decrease the amount of monthly payments for seniors if they move.
Now to answer the issue of all that stuff.  … (15 comments)

senior housing: The Boomers are coming! The Boomers are coming! - 09/22/06 01:42 PM
While not all REALTORS share my love of the study of aging and working with seniors, I know I am among those who refuse to have their heads in the sand, and strive to stay ahead of the curve.
I have seen an increase of Builders in Minnesota over-building urban condos, I'm sure with the anticipation that baby boomers will be moving into the city. Perhaps they know something I don't. My experience tells me boomers-for the large part-are either purchasing second homes near lakes or near recreational facilities, or are staying put to where they have migrated (the suburbs!)
What we don't have in … (1 comments)
