compass family services: Finding Your Way to Help the Hungry and Homeless - 01/27/20 09:13 AM
I "met" Philip Raices on ActiveRain today when I read his post about the plight of homeless veterans.
The magnitude of the homeless and hungry in our country is stunning. Groups here in San Francisco, and elsewhere, are working to find solutions, but it's slow going.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem, we can each find our own small ways to help. A few little things I focus on include:
serving breakfast to the homeless and hungry twice a month. Glide is one of the big groups;  3 meals a day are served 364 days a year. Breakfast is served … (35 comments)

compass family services: Gratitude Post #7 - Compass Family Services in SF - 11/18/18 09:40 AM
This morning I woke, thinking about Compass Family Services, and realizing how grateful I am for them and all they do.
Shortly after our move to San Francisco 7 years ago I happened across a newspaper article talking about homeless families in San Francisco. The article focused on one family who would spend some nights couch surfing with friends, other nights on the streets. Their young son was in elementary school, and they would take several buses across town, trying their best to get him to school. He'd often arrive late, usually unfed. The staff understood, would have breakfast for him, and then … (6 comments)

compass family services: Pay It Forward - our Annual Adopt-a-Family Tradition - 12/08/15 12:44 AM
Belinda Spillman once again is spearheading an Active Rain challenge, asking us to share ways we pay it forward. The idea behind this isn't for us to brag, but by sharing examples of ways we've found to make a difference, we might spark an idea in others, who will then implement their own way to add a bright spot in the life of another.
This is the 4th year my family and I have participated in San Francisco's Compass Family Services Adopt-a-Family program.
This year "our" family consists of a single mother, two daughters ages 13 and 10, and a baby boy, age … (33 comments)

compass family services: " We Would Like to Adopt a Family for Christmas" - 12/21/14 02:12 AM
This morning I received a contact from my Active Rain blog post which read, "We would like to adopt a family for this Christmas. Is it too late? Thank you so much, A."
I can't express how much that warmed my heart, and how happy I was to put her in touch with Compass Family Services in San Francisco.
Our family has participated in the Adopt-a-Family program for the past 3 Christmas seasons, and I can truly say it is the highlight for many of us, not only me, but also my daughter and our 21 year-old granddaughter (and maybe the … (15 comments)

compass family services: Making a Difference in our World - 07/15/14 12:39 AM
The month is at its mid-way point, and its a good time to respond to Donna Foerster's Active Rain challenge asking us to share how we make a difference in our community.
When my family was young, most of my volunteering centered around youth, participating as a Scout leader, classroom volunteer, PTA committees. Some causes touched me personally, and weekly hands-on "patterning" of a brain-damaged baby and later a toddler became a main focus for a number of years. Donating blood was another simple way for me to help the community at large.
As a Realtor, volunteering with our Real Estate … (10 comments)

compass family services: Paying it Forward - 12/06/13 04:06 AM
One of the (many) nice things about Active Rain is that it challenges us to think outside the box, both in business and on a personal level. The December Cloud Burst of You Challenge posted by Kerrie LaGuardia is one example.
December is a time of year we often are aware of others and like to do little acts of kindness and "pay it forward," and the Challenge encourages us to do just that.
My favorite "pay it forward" activity is working with Compass Family Services in San Francisco. The 7 of us in our family (Gene and I, 2 daughters, … (18 comments)
