Ft. Francisco

If you want to be transported back to the "Good old Days", you need to visit historical La Veta, Colorado, for Fort Francisco Days being held on July 28, 2007. The locals put on their Sunday best and make their way down to the Fort Francisco Museum for a day of food and entertainment. Attendees are asked to dress to reflect the time period (late 1800's). Col. John M. Francisco traveled to La Veta in 1834 and decided "This is paradise enough for me". Although Col. Francisco did not buy land in the area for another 24 years, he never forgot the pull of this paradise. For many of the locals (like me) this is why we live here.

As a fifth generation native of this small town, I can say that my family and several other local families have donated several items of interest to the Fort Museum. Having traveled through the collection of artifacts more than once, I can tell you that there are items in the museum to fascinate almost anyone. You have the blacksmith shop where you can see the tools of yesterday and during the Fort Days, parties are on hand to show you how they work. In the past there have been representatives of the local Native American population teaching the attendees how to make and play flutes. If you have more of an interest in games of ill repute, you can visit the local saloon to learn how to play old time Blackjack or Poker.

As you may have noticed, La Veta has grown from a small town of settlers to the budding Mecca that it is today. There are numerous small events such as Fort Francisco Days, that draw people to the town of La Veta and many of these people are so enchanted with this paradise that they come back to town to purchase second homes. There are even a few that want to relocate their families here and stay for the long haul. I will be attending Ft. Francisco days this weekend and would love for you to stop by and visit. I will be wandering around, so please look for my pretty face and name tag. For a list of local events, please visit the La Veta/Cuchara Chamber of Commerce Website @ www.lavetacucharachamber.com.

Monument Lake

Hello again, from beautiful La Veta, Colorado. It has been a while since I have been to Activerain, but we all know that life will just pass you by if you let it. I have been taking pictures and need to tell you about a few of the many great places that there are to visit in Southern Colorado.

When you're looking for fishing, beautiful scenery or just a place to relax, you need to visit Monument Lake in Stonewall, Colorado. Located approximately 30 miles West of Historic Trinidad, Colorado and roughly the same distance from La Veta, Colorado, it is one of the most pristine high mountain lakes in Southern Colorado. You have a great view of the West Spanish Peak, along with remnants of part of the Great Stonewall that lends it name to the quaint mountain hamlet of Stonewall, Colorado.

Monument Lake has a Restaurant, a Bar (The Coyote's Den), boast a small hotel and has a cluster of small cabins for rent along with some of the best camping in the world. The wildlife is abundant and you may have the occasion to share your campfire with a few of the local bears. The lake is stocked with German Brown and Rainbow Trout and can be fished with lures and live bait. It is also host to many groups and is the destination to go to for the Stonewall Fire Protection Districts Annual Fishing Tournament. As a fundraiser, this is a great event to help out the local firefighters, along with having a great time.

Monument Lake is one of the many spots located on the Historic Highway of Legends that starts at the Junction of Highway 12 and Highway 160 West of Walsenburg, Colorado. The highway threads through La Veta, Cuchara, Stonewall, Weston, Segundo and Vladez, leading all of the way to Trinidad, Colorado.

If you want to relax or just enjoy a day of fishing, make sure that you make it to Monument Lake this summer and if you can't make it during the summer, the fall is a great time to view the changing of the leaves.

Good Morning All. Greetings again, from beautiful La Veta, Colorado. It's almost 6:00 a.m. and if you have animals of any sort, you know that they rule your world not the other way around. Since I am up anyway, I am going for a walk and today I am going to take my camera with me. Who knows what I will encounter. Speaking of pictures, I have finally listed my first piece of property. It is a historical homestead here in La Veta. The Land Patents on this property were filed in 1919 and 1922 and the owners have the originals in their possession. The property is 360 acres North of La Veta and behold my beating heart, it has water. The price per acre is around $650.00 per acre. In Colorado and especially La Veta, that is a steal, especially with the views. Well, if I am going to catch the sunrise, I need to get going. If all goes well, I will have something new for you after my walk. Hopefully, I will not run into the town skunk. He has been making his rounds.
