Should safegaurds be dropped as soon as times get hard?

The first thing people think of dropping when times get hard is insurance. Why? Many see it as a luxury or unnecessary expense. Is it? I do not think so. The reason many of us purchase insurance is to prepare for the unexpected.

You pay for car insurance.

You pay for health insurance.

You pay for life insurance.

You pay for disability insurance.

You pay for home insurance.

And the list goes on.

My question to you is, why is it the first thing people stop paying? I want to hear your thoughts.
