The ferry between Molokai and Maui is increasing its one-way fare to $68.40 the increase was due to the rising cost of fuel. The last fare increase was in 1995, and since then the price of diesel fuel has risen to $4.40 from $1 a gallon. spokesman at the sea link have been quoted saying "We can't take the losses any longer," "If the tariff doesn't pass, we shut down."
Maui Singer-songwriters Dorothy Betz, guitarist, and Les Adam, keyboard, have released a DIY (do it yourself) CD called "Drive On."
After pain staking hours days, weeks and years, writing, mixing editing and composing. This Maui Magic Due has released their life blood and hard work efforts. I had the blessing to watch, feel and listen to the new music at a release party at Be Happy http://www.behappypaia.com/ (a new local music and art store) in Paia, run by none other then our own lovely Lisa Alo.
Dorthy and Les are unique to me, a soul mate team that smile and brim with joy. You can feel the Mana when they play. The first time I met Les; and had a conversation with him, it ran from absurd (Politics to Aliens) to completely absurd, I knew then he is one of us, A Musician. Something I missed about touring, the long drives (Drive On) the conversations, debates and prolific word tossing.
It's been just about a year since I met them, I have enjoyed their music and friendship ever since.
In these times of disappointment, economical hardship and WAR we can always escape with entertainment and music. Please by any means visit their web site, listen to their art and unwind. Drive On and enjoy life.
Dorthy and Les have been playing with Vince Esquire at the "Hana Hou Cafe" in Haiku every Wednesday night .... http://www.hanahoucafe.com/ This is a great place to get introduced to their music and have some ono grindz.
Vince Esquire (virtuoso guitarist) plays on this CD and Gary Kubota of Star-Bulletin's Maui writer contirbute lyrics with "Hitchhike Highway" The songs are available for download at betzandadam.com Check em out Aloha ha ha
Malcolm and Lynn Shiroma have built a thriving family-oriented karaoke business and are preparing a strategic expansion to the neighbor islands and mainland over the next five years. The husband-and-wife team, who anticipate gross sales to exceed $1 million this year from Krazy Karaoke, are looking at franchising opportunities, which is expected to take the company to the next level.
The couple have found a niche in the competitive karaoke market, focusing on children's parties, baby showers and birthdays at their two locations at the Pearl Kai Shopping Center and on Young Street. The Shiromas also juggle a second career in real estate, operating Property Center Inc. -- a sales and property management company -- from the second floor of the Young Street location.
While unexpected, being involved in a music-related career comes natural to the Shiromas. Lynn is a former a backup singer with Liz Damon's Orient Express, a local band from the 1970s, while Malcolm was a trombone player for a rock band -- known as Warning -- while at Kaimuki High School
The first half of 2008 in Maui saw fewer real estate transactions compared to the first half of last year, with 25.9% less single-family homes and 17.8% fewer condominiums being sold. Home prices experienced a drop of about 8.9% to $590,000 from $647,000 last year.
Overall condominium prices for the rest of the island remain stable with a slight 0.9% increase. For single-family homes the majority of sales in the first half of 2008 occured in Wailuku, followed by Kihei and Kahului.

Hawaii ranked No. 42 in the nation, as compared to the four highest states.
California (Properties with Foreclosure Filings): 64,683
Florida: 35,264
Arizona: 11,620
Nevada: 7,276 Is buying a foreclosure a good deal?
Compared to what? Compared to a market that is priced right and a knowledgeable Realtor who knows their inventory. There are many properties that have no balance owed that are for sale. Mom and Pops who can sell for less down size and move on for much less then a foreclosure.
Short sales can be good yet the work and time involved are going to vary.
I was told that all the inventory and amount of work on Hawaii short sales to date June 1st 2008 will take the rest of 2009 to finish and close. Thats not accounting for whats coming through from July to December 2008. It's just a matter of our economy and riding out the debt owed until it comes to a decent balance.
