renewable energy: A Funny Thing Happened On My Way To The Windfarm..... - 07/01/10 01:34 AM
I had a wonderful thing happen to me this year.
I was hired as adjunct faculty by the forward thinking Grand Rapids Community College to teach Wind Energy Technology. I am always looking to broaden my horizons...and this experience has broadened my horizons far more than I thought possible.

First of all, I never thought I would make front page news...boy was I surprised and my Daddy was proud to see me on the front page of anything, especially The Collegiate!
And then they started calling me Professor! of all things!
Imagine THAT!

renewable energy: Good Jobs, Green Jobs...show me the money!!! - 01/13/09 11:35 PM
The venue? Washington DC
The focus? Green Jobs..and I'm not talking about the Presidential Inauguration, although I find the timing uncanny. Remember Joe the Plumber? Now he is...Joe the Solar Guy!!!
The Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference is scheduled for February 3 - 6, 2009.
The event promises  "government decision-makers and elected officials will join labor, environmental and business advocates to forge and agenda and share ideas and strategies for a refashioned, green economy."
Many I talk to are skeptical about how many jobs can be created by this burgeoning industry we call "green." On the conference website, you will … (12 comments)

Don't let the sun go down on our Federal Tax Credits!!!
Thanks to Paul Rekow of Iowa who is a member of the small wind group I belong to. Paul forwarded this information this morning.
As you can see from the counter on my right side panel, federal solar tax credits expire in less than 104 days. It is very important for renewable energy to be viable and affordable that these credits are extended as well as the $2000 cap for residential … (6 comments)

renewable energy: Windspire by Mariah Power - Renewable energy creates new Michigan jobs!! Part II - 09/16/08 11:55 PM

Looking up Mariah WindSpire!!!

Last month I spoke of  a new manufacturing venture between MasTech Manufacturing and Mariah Wind Power and the possibility of the partnership bringing jobs to Manistee County in my blog Windspire by Mariah Power Part I.
Many in Michigan, including myself, have been sitting on pins and needles to hear the decision of this joint venture.

Where will the new home for the manufacturing of this Vertical Axis Wind Turbine be?

This began quietly in early June 2008. While working on the Michigan Energy Fair Allan O'Shea, co-chair of the Michigan … (13 comments)

renewable energy: Energy Efficient Log Homes! "How did foam grow in that log?" - 07/25/08 07:30 PM
Are you like me?
Do you love the many opportunities for new products and ideas being brought forth by the green building industry?
It seems daily I come across people and products that keep this industry fast paced and filled with growth and opportunity. I love the challenge of being able to combine several products into a great package for the consumer.
If you haven't noticed....I love what I do. Combining the health aspects of a home with energy efficiency and green building and providing a money saving package for the consumer is the coolest job in the whole world! In my … (19 comments)

renewable energy: Remember the Day...Green building is not NEW...Just Improved!!! - 02/17/08 04:56 PM

This drawing was a GREAT FIND !! A few years ago, my aunt and uncle retired from farming. When they moved my aunt gave me a framed drawing that had hung in my Grandma's farmhouse for years. It was drawn by my great uncle Monsignor Maurice Walsh. The art was framed in a beautiful antique frame. I was honored to be the recipient from among 30+ cousins.
The drawing was very hard to see. I wasn't certain if it was faded from so many years or if the glass was dirty so I took it apart to find out. What a … (32 comments)

renewable energy: Shhh...Green Michigan News! Exciting! - 11/05/07 09:27 PM
We are seeing so many new companies emerging into the Green Scene it is hard to keep up with it. I believe many consumers are being inundated with green messages but don't necessarily understand the benefits.
It is great to see a company who is launching a new resource for consumers and industry professionals alike.

renewable energy: Transformation In Michigan - Spotlight...the little LumberYard that Could! - 11/02/07 07:05 PM
Transformation....
    from Wikipedia....
Transformation (root transform) may refer to: Transformation is also referred to as a turn.
Have you ever been a part of or truly seen a transformation?
Transforming is
        ....altering
               ....changing
                        mutating...
So many companies  these days, are Transforming.
Their transformations are not always for the good of their employees...
Electrolux, in Michigan, transformed to a company of P & L...rather than investing in their Michigan employees, they moved operations to Mexico...leaving the town of Greenville, Michigan also transformed....
THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT!!!!
I would like to discuss … (18 comments)

renewable energy: The Winds Of Change - 10/21/07 01:05 PM
Last Thursday, October 19, 2007 much of the midwest was taken by storms. The storms took 3 lives in Michigan.  My sympathies to the families in Michigan and elsewhere around the country who were affected by these storm systems.
As these storms rolled through our area I found them prophetic.
Thursday was the eve of a major change for me. A very exciting new journey and a new pathway for me was just beginning ...
I have to give some credit for my new pathway to The Secret....
I have been a fan of "The Secret"  since watching the DVD which was gifted … (26 comments)

renewable energy: The Night The Lights Went Out In....(name your town!) - 10/15/07 10:42 PM
Living in a community with underground power lines we have rarely experienced in the past 17 years more than a half day without power. We have gas water heat and a gas range so it's not that big a deal...one can always bypass the electronic ignition on the range to eat and get a hot shower. No TV? No biggie..for me that is!
We did have one power outage that lasted three days when the straight line winds came through back in 1998. I'll never forget waking up at 2 am to my husband watching the TV through his eyelids in his … (20 comments)

renewable energy: Renewable Energy, Communities and Change - 10/01/07 09:41 AM
Last week I wrote a 4 part series Renewable Energy - Does Your Zoning Allow It?
On Thursday September 27 the Onekama Township Zoning Board reconvened to make a motion on this Request for Conditional Zoning.
In a 5 - 2 vote the board carried a motion to recommend to the Township NOT to take action until the Planning Commission has time to take a look at the issues more deeply.
Dave Smeltzer, Chairperson of the Onekama Township Planning Commission, did a good job explaining that this Conditional Zoning request has brought to light greater issues.
Dave explained the Resort Residential Zoning (RR3) language regarding … (18 comments)

Thank You Jeff Turner for teaching me a new skill today --  how to insert a video into my blog! It was really quite easy!
Crosby, Stills and Nash said it best....Teach Your Children Well....
<p>
With school back in session I thought it would be helpful to post this link to the Department of Energy's
Energy Kids Page This website includes energy games, facts and classroom activities for teachers. It also includes Science Fair Experiments so if your child is getting ready for a science fair this may be a great resource for ideas while learning to help our environment!
