door county: Door County, Wisconsin cherry crop severely damaged by bad weather - 06/26/08 12:00 PM
When I lived and worked in Door County, Wisconsin back in the early 1980s, one of the local treats was a slice of Montmorency cherry pie. This summer, the cherry crop in the Door has been devastated by bad weather. This year's harvest may produce only one or two percent of last year's crop. The cherry harvest is a major part of the area economy in Door County, with nearly 400 seasonal harvesting jobs being lost this year. Wineries and area restaurants will also be affected. Door Peninsula Winery produces thousands of bottles of cherry wine each season and will likely have to raise

door county: Fish Boil or Fish Fry? Which Do You Prefer? - 04/29/08 01:06 PM
In northern Wisconsin, the "fish on Fridays" tradition at restaurants is alive and well. I used to spend summers in Door County, Wisconsin, where the Fish Boil was a veritable institution. I recall many summer nights at the Viking Grill in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin, watching the "master boiler" perform the overboil at the end of the cooking process, waitstaff serving big chunks of freshly-cooked whitefish and trout, along with the Door County cherry pie for dessert! In the Apostle Islands area, the fish boil tradition was a bit less commonplace, but after spending a few years searching for fish boils, I found Greunke's in Bayfield, which serves an

door county: "Door County Almanak" Offers a Closer Look at One of Wisconsin's Favorite Summer Destinations - 12/15/07 03:27 PM
If you haven't seen one, check out a copy of the "Door County Almanak" (yes, that's the correct spelling of this publication). The "Almanak" series was actually published in the early to mid-1980s, by Dragonsbreath Press in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. The series is out of print now, to my knowledge, but Amazon and various other sources still carry these books. The Almanak is a treasure trove of Door County folklore: recipes, old photos, stories from pioneer days, fishing advice. poetry and tall tales. You can read about "The History of the Fish Boil" (in volume 3), or "Meditations on a Small Lake"

door county: New Facilities Planned for Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wisconsin - 11/21/07 10:22 AM
In 1976, James and Fran Dutton created the Birch Creek Farm Music Festival in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. At the center of the music festival campus was an old hand-hewn barn that the Duttons painstakingly fashioned into a concert hall, with stage and seating for perhaps 150 people. The barn and concert stage is still there. And in its fourth decade, the facility, now known as Birch Creek Music Performance Center, has grown in stature and scope to become one of Door County's most popular performing arts sites, as well as a nationally-known summer music camp. As Birch Creek has expanded its

door county: Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant Graces the List of Door County Dining Attractions - 11/21/07 02:17 AM
One of Door County's best-known visitor attractions is Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant, in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. Al Johnson's is a family-owned establishment, serving authentic Swedish cuisine. The restaurant has a sod roof and goats can occasionally be seen grazing on top of the building! Inside, the decor is warm and inviting, even remarkably authentic. The foyer reminds me of a restaurant I visited some years ago on the shores of Sweden's Lake Vattern. My personal favorite is the Swedish pancakes, with whipped cream and strawberries. The ample menu also includes Swedish meatballs, Broiled Norwegian Salmon, cold plates, limpa bread, lingonberries, pickled herring and pickled beets, Door

door county: Door County's Peninsula Players - America's Oldest Professional Resident Summer Theater Company - 11/21/07 01:23 AM
A trip to Wisconsin's Door County isn't complete without attending a Peninsula Players performance. The Players' first season opened on July 25, 1935 with a presentation of Noel Coward's Hay Fever. The original location of Players performances was behind the Bonnie Brook Motel in Fish Creek, Wisconsin. And after seventy-two years in operation, the Players now occupy a large, modern theater complex in Fish Creek that is well-suited to accomodate the theatre's large and loyal audience. The Peninsula Players acting company has seen many of its alumni go on to appear on Broadway, in films and on television. The large facility permits acting

door county: The Sister Bay Bowl is a Door County Attraction You Shouldn't Miss - 11/21/07 12:30 AM
When you go to a restaurant you haven't visited in over twenty years, you expect to find things changed. The menu is usually different, or the food quality something less than you remember. So imagine my surprise when I stopped at the Sister Bay Bowl, in Wisconsin's Door County, on a chilly off-season November evening and it was almost as if I'd stepped into a time machine. The origin of the Sister Bay Bowl dates back to 1950, when the Willems family began operating the Sister Bay Hotel. In 1958, Earl and Rita tore down the dance hall and constructed a six-lane bowling alley. By 1964, the bowling alley included

door county: Reduced Winter Schedule for Washington Island Ferry Line in Door County, Wisconsin - 11/17/07 11:56 PM
The Washington Island Ferry Line schedule is down to six daily trips each way, between Door County's Northport Pier and Detroit Harbor on Washington Island. The ferry route crosses the channel which connects Green Bay with Lake Michigan north of Door County. Unlike the Madeline Island Ferry Line in northwest Wisconsin, which shuts down once the Lake Superior ice between Bayfield and LaPointe becomes too thick, the Washington Island Ferry Line offers daily ferry service all year round, weather permitting. As of December 3, the ferry schedule will be reduced to four trips per day each way, with no afternoon trips on

door county: Lake Nebagamon Is Like No Other Resort Community in the Upper Midwest - 10/27/07 11:59 PM
In the late 1890s, lumber baron, Fredrick Weyerhauser moved his family to the Lake Nebagamon and established a resort community there. Weyerhauser and others fell in love with the area and built it into one of the most charming summer communities in all of Wisconsin, comparable with vacation destinations like Bayfield, Madeline Island and Door County. Around the turn of the century, the area experienced considerable growth and popularity. President Calvin Coolidge visited in 1928. The Weyerhauser Company constructed camps, added rail service and built a mill, company office buildings, horse stables, boarding and rooming houses and a general store. Lake Nebagamon
