madeline island ferry line: Property Showings on Madeline Island - In December? - 11/21/10 08:31 PM

PROPERTY SHOWINGS ON MADELINE ISLAND - IN DECEMBER?
Yes, 2010 has been an unusual year for real estate on Madeline Island.
It looks like the month of December will be no exception.  We have multiple property showings scheduled during the first three weeks of December.
Our sales season got off to a slow start this year.  The summer months were very quiet in the office.  And yet you could  definitely tell that there was an undercurrent of buyer interest.
We didn't encounter our first serious buyers until late August.
Now, smart buyers who have been watching our market very … (0 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Madeline Island Realty is still the only Madeline Island Real Estate Company to show up on Page One for a Google Search of "Madeline Island" - 11/21/10 05:23 PM
For at least the past seven months, our northwest Wisconsin real estate company, Madeline Island Realty, is the only real estate firm to show up on page one of a Google search for the search term "Madeline Island".
The first entry for a real estate brokerage competitor in the same search came up as the fourth result on page three of that search.

In the Google search results, Madeline Island Realty ranked just behind the Madeline Island Ferry Line and ahead of both the Madeline Island Museum and the Inn on Madeline Island.  We also dominated the page one … (0 comments)

madeline island ferry line: The Road Less Traveled - Roads That Don't Show up on Madeline Island Maps - 11/13/10 11:31 PM
The mapping of roads and landmarks on Madeline Island definitely needs a facelift.
Thanks to the few maps we DO have available, most tourist visitors to Madeline Island are at least familiar with our most-traveled roads, such as Big Bay Road, North and South Shore Roads, Middle Road, Hagen Road and Benjamin Boulevard.
But what about the growing number of Island roads that do NOT appear on area maps?

Some roads are sometimes incorrectly spelled, such as Black's Shanty Road (often misnamed "Black Shanty Road")?  Others just don't show up at all on the maps published by the Madeline Island Ferry Line or on those … (3 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Ferry Service Between La Pointe & Bayfield Shut Down on New Year's Day - 01/02/09 01:06 PM
Yesterday, the Madeline Island Ferry Line shut down service between Madeline Island and the Bayfield mainland.

Cars and trucks on the Lake Superior ice, just off the Bayfield, Wisconsin shoreline

This weekend, there will be "limited" windsled service across the two miles of Chequamegon Bay ice, with Saturday trips departing the Island at 9 am, 11:30 and 4 pm.  Saturday windsled runs will depart Bayfield at 9:15, 12:15 and 4:15 daily, for the time being [schedule subject to change].
On Sundays, the planned windsled schedule is as follows: Trips depart La Pointe at 9, Noon and 4 pm.  Trips depart Bayfield at … (2 comments)

madeline island ferry line: The Ice Road Cometh! - 12/27/08 09:08 PM
Rumor has it that the Madeline Island Ferry Line may be shutting down in the next few days, in preparation for the formation of an ice road.

Lake Superior at dawn, Canal Park, Duluth, Minnesota

As of this evening, the Ferry Line recorded message informs Islanders that they should move vehicles over to the Bayfield side before Tuesday, December 30.
This could be the earliest and best ice road we've seen in a couple of decades.  And the impact of the ice road on the LaPointe community is huge.
During ice road season, Islanders and visitors save quite a bit on ferry … (6 comments)

madeline island ferry line: The Isles are alive, with the sound of money - 08/20/08 09:46 AM
Thanks in part to the Wisconsin State Bureau of Aeronautics, Madeline Island is receiving nearly four million dollars worth of gravel.
The Madeline Island Ferry dock is a beehive of activity, with bargeloads full of gravel for road and sanitation and airport projects being delivered daily.  Every time the crane swings from barge to the giant hopper on the ferry dock, you hear the sound of money being poured onto the Island.

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle presented the Town of La Pointe with a check for $1.2 million on August 11.  That portion came from the Bureau of Aeronautics, to … (3 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Last boat from Bayfield to Madeline Island on Friday night of "Biker Weekend" - 06/22/08 02:57 PM
I found myself on the 11 p.m. trip, the last of the day, from Bayfield to La Pointe this evening.
If you were trying to determine whether or not tourism is down this year, you'd get the impression things are slow this year by riding the last ferry of the day to La Pointe on a Friday summer evening.
We left the mainland aboard the Bayfield at around 11:10 p.m., with a total of just seven vehicles on deck.  Two of the vehicles had Wisconsin license plates, the remaining five (including mine) had Minnesota plates.
The Bayfield has a capacity of 26 … (0 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Madeline Island Ferry Line forced to make tough choices due to rising fuel costs - 06/19/08 08:35 PM
Rumor has it that the Madeline Island Ferry Line in La Pointe, Wisconsin has recently resorted to layoffs and shift changes in ferry crews in an effort to save money.  Economic forces are apparently to blame, including reduced tourist traffic resulting from high gasoline prices.
An area source reported that tourist traffic is down this season and the Ferry Line has been forced to cut back multiple shifts, cancel two round-trip crossings per day and reduce its staff by several employees.
Another source mentioned that the Ferry Line crew seems to have adopted the practice of holding ferry boats at the dock longer for some trips, waiting for "stragglers" to … (0 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Madeline Island Ferry Line announces trip schedule to be adjusted to conserve fuel - 06/07/08 06:33 PM
The Madeline Island Ferry Line, in La Pointe, Wisconsin, is making an extra effort to improve fuel efficiency this summer.
The Madeline Island Ferry Line has announced "minor adjustments" in its 2008 summer schedule, aimed at conserving diesel fuel.  As of Monday, June 9, the 12:00 Noon and 3 p.m. ferry trips from Bayfield and  from La Pointe (on Madeline Island) are canceled.
At this time, no additional trip reductions are contemplated.
Visit the Madeline Island Ferry Line website for schedule revision details, or phone 715-747-2801.

madeline island ferry line: Unscientific Survey on Memorial Day Visitor Traffic to Madeline Island - 05/24/08 04:38 PM
Here's the results of a fairly un-scientific survey about visitor traffic aboard the Madeline Island Ferry Line last night.
A friend sent me results of his survey, in which he counted the number of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois license plates aboard the "Bayfield" on the 9 p.m. run to Madeline Island.  Sounds like fun, doesn't it?
The count results:
14 vehicles with Minnesota license plates
4 vehicles with Wisconsin license plates
1 vehicle with Illinois license plates
How's that for accuracy?
Well, the results are in keeping with my assumption that the majority of summer visitors to Madeline Island come from Minnesota … (2 comments)

madeline island ferry line: June 8 Freebies for Madeline Island Visitors - Who doesn’t like a great deal now & then? - 05/24/08 04:32 PM
On June eighth, there will be a series of bargains available to Madeline Island visitors.  On that day, the Madeline Island Ferry Line will be offering its "Free Passenger Day" (vehicles are excluded from the discount).
And on the same day, both the Madeline Island Historical Museum in downtown La Pointe and Big Bay State Park will be offering free admission.  The State Park will also provide free shuttle service from 9:15 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. on June 8.  The Historical Museum's "Visitor Appreciation Day" is an annual favorite with tourists and visitors.
Across the water, the Apostle Highlands Golf Course in Bayfield, … (0 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Aftermath of Lake Superior Storm Friday Leaves Trees Down in Washburn, Wisconsin - 04/13/08 12:57 PM
My friend (and ActiveRain member) Mike Arnao called me today to fill me in on the aftermath of the west Lake Superior storm which finally ended yesterday.
Mike told me that mature pines and hardwoods were down in Washburn, Wisconsin.  In some cases, trees were snapped off by high winds.  Street signs were down as well and debris from the windstorm was strewn around parts of town.
Madeline Island and the mainland town of Mellen received the most snow.  Both locales received fifteen inches of wet, heavy snow during the course of the storm.
The Madeline Island Ferry Line shut down Friday for … (2 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Fuel Surcharge on Ferry Fees is a Sign of the Times on Madeline Island - 04/12/08 11:46 PM
The Madeline Island Ferry Line has been forced to impose a "fuel surcharge" on trips to and from the Island this season.  The surcharge is caused by sizable increases in the cost of Diesel fuel during the past year.
No one expects the Ferry Line to have to eat the increased costs of operation resulting from high oil prices.  But the surcharge and rising car ferry rates will impact residents in a big way.  Islanders rely completely upon the Ferry Line for goods, groceries and construction materials.  The ferry is a lifeline for Island residents.
There's the old saying about you-know-what flowing downhill.  … (4 comments)

madeline island ferry line: High Winds and Waves Force Shutdown of Madeline Island Ferry Line Yesterday - 04/12/08 10:18 PM
The late winter storm that struck the Duluth and Superior area and spread across western Lake Superior yesterday forced the shutdown of the Madeline Island Ferry Line for a day.
The Ferry Line office in LaPointe, Wisconsin announced it would be shutting down all day on April 11th due to heavy snow, whiteout visibility, high winds and dangerous waves.  Regular ferry service resumed today.
The Ferry Line doesn't shut down very often.  When high winds and waves become a problem, the ferry has been known to suspend service for a period of several hours at a time.  The duration of yesterday's storm … (3 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Madeline Island Ferry Line Resumes Trip Schedule - 04/09/08 03:27 PM
The Madeline Island Ferry's Running Again!
On Monday April 7, the Madeline Island Ferry Line resumed its trip schedule between Bayfield, Wisconsin and Madeline Island.  The ferry line website reports that it took the "Island Queen" just over an hour on Sunday the 6th to break a path in the ice between La Pointe and Bayfield.
The Ferry Line also reports that it has invoked a fuel surcharge to the rates published on their website and in the printed ferry schedule.  This surcharge is due to sharp increases in diesel fuel costs since last summer.
The current abbreviated ferry schedule provides for eight trips a day, with the 7:30 … (4 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Ferry Season is Coming to Madeline Island – Coast Guard to Break Ice Next Week - 04/05/08 07:33 AM
The Duluth News Tribune reported today that the U. S. Coast Guard plans to operate ice breaking craft in the south channel of Chequamegon bay next week, on Monday or Tuesday.  They plan to open the channel for ferry crossings between Bayfield, Wisconsin and Madeline Island.
Once the channel is open, the Madeline Island Ferry line will undertake its first trips of the 2008 season, probably by mid-week.
There was a near-tragedy on the ice near Red Cliff (just north of Bayfield) yesterday afternoon.  It was reported that two fishermen on an ATV broke through the ice and they spent approximately … (2 comments)

madeline island ferry line: Ice Road May Be Late This Year, But It's Still Possible - 01/19/08 12:02 PM
With the ten-day La Pointe, Wisconsin forecast calling for daytime high temperatures in the single digits, it appears likely that we'll see a switch from the ferry to windsled transportation to & from Madeline Island this year after all.  We may even get an ice road!
Temperatures began to plummet in the Chequamegon Bay area during the past week.  Ice is beginning to accumulate in La Pointe harbor and the ferry schedule is subject to change as a result.  Windsled crews are standing by, ready to take over if and when the ferry shuts down due to thick ice.
This season was the first time the Wisconsin … (4 comments)
