Almost Ultimate Steal - Office Professional Plus 2007 $84.98 - 10/31/07 08:21 AM
In my last post I reported the Ultimate Steal.  If your student doesn't qualify for that one, this one's the next best thing.
Microsoft has teamed up with schools throughout the country to offer students discounted full versions of Microsoft Office 2007.
If your child's school participates in the Microsoft Student Select Program, you qualify for huge discounts.  Microsoft has more information with links to the two vendors who sell through these programs online.
I followed one of the vendor links and looked up my kids' schools.  They do participate in the program so I was able to order Microsoft Office … (17 comments)

The Ultimate Steal - Office Ultimate 2007 $59.95 - 10/31/07 06:59 AM
Yes, this is quite the bargain!  What's the catch?  I mean, MS Office 2007 Ultimate retails for $679!  The catch is that you have to be a student.  Office Ultimate 2007 is available to students of US schools at this incredible price.
Don't confuse MS Office 2007 Ultimate with MS Office 2007 Home & Student Edition.  The latter can be easily purchased by students (at around $139) but only includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint.  In the past the Home and Student Editions also included Outlook.  It no longer includes Outlook so don't buy that one by mistake expecting to have Outlook in … (17 comments)

Desiderata - 10/30/07 06:48 AM
I mentioned to Jason Crouch in a reply to a comment about a poem.  I heard Desiderata read every day by a DJ in NYC as I was growing up.  I had not realized how much of an impact it had on me until I flew back 30 years in time to a time when I heard this read almost daily. It really is an incredible poem.  I am posting it here for all to read.  I'm sure many have read it already but a good thing is never read too much.
It's not my writing so flag it for points … (20 comments)

Did anyone notice the number up there?
55,002 members!
I don't recall exactly, everything was so new back then, but I think there were around 6,000 members when I joined in January.
Active Rain has revolutionized the way we do real estate.   Blog on!

Embedding A Spreadsheet On Your Blog - 10/26/07 05:36 PM
I may be mistaken, but up until now I did not know of any way to embed a spreadsheet in a post other than taking a screenshot image and posting the Jpeg. And if you had a very long spreadsheet, forget that even. It would not fit on your screen for a screenprint.
Well, Google Docs has changed that! They have added some advanced features to their awesome FREE site that rock! One of the new features allows you to embed all or part of a spreadsheet on your blog!
The spreadsheet below was created in Google Docs. I then generated … (29 comments)

Please Welcome A Great Addition To The Rain - 10/26/07 01:39 PM
I'd like to introduce you all to Justin Chester.  The last post I wrote was about Justin's incredible customer service.
I decided he had a lot to offer us Active Rainers and extended an invitation to join.
Justin is part of Pat Zaby's tech team.  So if he's offering tips on Outlook and such, I suggest you pay attention =)
As a matter of fact, he just posted a great article offering just that.  A way to use Outlook more efficiently.
I hope you'll stop by and welcome him to the most incredible online real estate community in existence. =)

Going The Extra Mile - 10/25/07 08:25 PM
Are you providing your customers with the bare minimum to comply or do you go above and beyond the call of duty?
Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking with Justin Chester of Integra Computers.  I was actually speaking to him because he's part of the tech team at Pat Zaby's Seminars and Systems.  I needed a little help with something I purchased from Pat and Justin was providing the help.
Justin asked me to allow him remote access to my computer.  I did.  He then said "whoa, you've got way too many programs running in the background!"  He explained that … (15 comments)

Somebody Stop Me - PLEASE!! - 10/15/07 11:31 AM
I am having such fun on the web today!
Why is today any different?  It started out like any other day.  Internet Explorer 7 froze on me several times as I traveled the web.
I emailed Jeff Dowler about something and a series of emails ensued.  We got to chatting about Internet Explorer.  He has 6.  I have 7.  We each hate it.  He said his daughter uses Firefox and loves it.  I asked him:
"what the heck are we waiting for then?"
I came to AR to search "Firefox" and got a ton of results.  As I read one article … (27 comments)

Blog Writing Help - 10/14/07 03:09 AM
Here's something for those wishing to perfect their blogging style.  That includes me too.  This was written many, many years ago.  Before blogging, or computers were around.  It's still just as relevant today.
The following is taken from George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language" written in 1946, over 60 years ago!:
"Now that I have made this catalogue of swindles and perversions, let me give another example of the kind of writing that they lead to. This time it must of its nature be an imaginary one. I am going to translate a passage of good English into modern English of … (33 comments)

Asa Coon Rest In Peace - 10/13/07 07:24 AM
Asa Coon was an angry child even by his uncle's admission.  Earlier this week he wounded 4 at his Cleveland high school before taking his own life.  He was 14 years old.
Fourteen years old with the weight of the world on his shoulders.  Fourteen years old and no recourse, in his eyes, but to do what he did.  I can ask why all I want.  I can debate it all I want.  The fact remains that a child, fourteen years old, who should have been looking forward to the rest of his life is now dead.
I don't watch the … (20 comments)

Palmetto Bay Charges Park Usage Fee - 10/10/07 08:50 AM

People are ticked off. They're angry over the resolution passed by Palmetto Bay commissioners charging the public a fee for using Coral Reef Park.
The resolution passed last month and parents lost no time letting Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugine Flinn Jr. and the commissioners know how they felt about it.
Palmetto Bay now charges organizations that use the park a $15 user fee per member per season. Use of the park used to be free.
There are many youth organizations and sports leagues that use Coral Reef Park. One such group is Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading. They're a non-profit group that has used … (4 comments)

Palmetto Bay Market Report - 10/09/07 03:57 PM
If you're looking to buy or sell a home in Palmetto Bay the following numbers will interest you.  They represent the homes sold and available for sale in Palmetto Bay.
The first line of data is the total.  If you look beneath that you will see a breakdown by price ranges.
When the entire county of Miami-Dade has enough inventory to last us at least four years, it's nice to see that the real estate numbers in Palmetto Bay are much healthier, in some cases as little as ten month's worth of inventory.  While ten months is still considered a Buyer's … (6 comments)

Akismet, Akasmet a Green & Yellow Basket - 10/09/07 03:08 PM
I just had another SPAM comment stopped dead in it's track on my outside blog.  I didn't stop it.  It was stopped by Akismet.
I have Akismet on my outside blog because Jim Cronin put it there.  But at Akismet.com they state that you can get it too!  They're so dead set against spam that they put this on their site:
"In the spirit of helping the blogosphere as much as possible, we've decided to make Akismet free for as many people as possible. We have free API keys available for your personal blog."
Every time I log into my outside … (10 comments)

Palmetto Bay Stargazing - FREE Every Saturday Night - 10/08/07 08:28 PM
Looking for something fun to do in Palmetto Bay on a Saturday night?  Look no more.  Not only is this fun, it's also FREE.  Sure beats the movies at $9 a pop.
The Southern Cross Astronomical Society has been bringing astronomy to us since 1922.  They meet each Saturday night at the Bill Sadowski Nature Preserve in Palmetto Bay from 8 - 10PM.  Their volunteers do this for fun.  We're lucky!
I took the kids there this past weekend.  We checked the weather and headed out.  When we arrived at the park, the gates were open (they're usually locked at this … (12 comments)

Palmetto Bay Schools - 10/08/07 11:39 AM
Palmetto Bay has excellent schools available to it's residents.  The public schools in the district consistently earn A's and are one of the reasons many flock to Palmetto Bay.  The private schools are well-respected throught the county and beyond.

Palmetto Bay - Where Exactly Is It? - 10/07/07 09:43 PM
When I moved to South Florida in 2001, what is now known as Palmetto Bay was another section of Miami.  While some old timers still refer to it as Perrine, the official mailing address was Miami, Florida.  No more.  The Village of Palmetto Bay incorporated on September 10, 2002 and is alive and well today.
I like visuals and I think most people do too.  Here's a map to place yourself.  Palmetto Bay is outlined in red.  The North border is SW 136th Street (The Falls Shopping Center is directly across US 1 at this point).  The South border is SW … (5 comments)

Palmetto Bay- Bill Sadowski Nature Preserve - 10/07/07 07:17 AM
The Bill Sadowski Nature Preserve in Palmetto Bay is the only greenspace of its kind in the area.  It has three distinct habitats within its compound: pineland; tropical hardwood hammock; and a drained everglades slough.  It is roughly 30 acres in size and is open from sunup to sundown, although if you're driving there, the car gates are open only from 10:00AM - 5:00PM.
As you drive into the park you'll notice monkey bars and nice, soft sand for the little ones to the right.  Keep driving into the parking area and you'll see the campfire ring with built-in benches.  A … (15 comments)

Banyan Tree- Palmetto Bay & Beyond - 10/06/07 10:23 AM

When I first moved to South Florida I fell in love with the trees here.  The different varieties of palm trees are hard to keep up with.  The Royal Poinciana is another favorite.  But the Banyan tree captivates me.
Banyan trees can be found throughout South Florida.  They are quite impressive.  If you take a drive on Old Cutler Road starting in Palmetto Bay and heading north to Coral Gables, you'll see many of them.  Their canopies can extend clear across the street.  But it's their trunks that mesmerize.  … (50 comments)

Village Of Parks - Palmetto Bay - 10/05/07 09:21 PM
Palmetto Bay has earned itself the nickname the Village of Parks.  The following parks make up the parks system in Palmetto Bay:
Deering Estate at Cutler - 16701 SW 72 Avenue.  Follow Old Cutler Road to 168th Street where you'll see signs to this exquisite, unforgettable experience.  The rustle of the palms, lapping bay water and songs of the birds will take you back to gentler times in south Florida.  And to think people actually lived in this paradise.  Not to be missed.
Bill Sadowski Nature Preserve - 17555 SW 79 Avenue.  Just drive on 176 Street and east of 79th Avenue you'll … (19 comments)

Palmetto Bay Village Report - 10/05/07 01:59 PM
The Village of Palmetto Bay is a vibrant community in Miami-Dade County.  The village incorporated on September 10, 2002.  Prior to it's incorporation Palmetto Bay was known as the Perrine area of Miami.
Palmetto Bay is located directly south of Pinecrest.  They share SW 136th Street as their common boundary.  The village stretches as far south as Eureka Drive (SW 184th Street) and it's East/West boundaries are Biscayne Bay and South Dixie Highway respectively.
Palmetto Bay is known as the Village of Parks.  While some might think that 7 parks does not a "Village of Parks" make, several of the parks are … (12 comments)
