palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Unsuccessful Redland Real Estate Auction - Part II - 12/19/07 04:06 PM
I wrote about an unsuccessful real estate auction in the Redland a few weeks back. I commented about the fact that it was not an absolute auction being the primary reason for it’s turning out to be a flop. Then I had the opportunity to attend another auction in the Redland. This one was different in that it was an absolute auction. When the public thinks ‘auction’ they think whatever’s being sold will be sold to the highest bidder. I, personally, think it’s a gimmick to give them anything but. But that is just my opinion. When an auction is not

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Snow In Miami At Dolphin Mall - 12/18/07 08:05 AM
Are you a transplanted Northerner living in Miami? Missing snow just a little at this time of year? Have I got news for you! Dolphin Mall gets into the holiday spirit by including a snowfall each evening at 7:00. This is a real treat in Miami! Additional snowfalls occur at 9:00pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The snow will stop falling on January 6th, though, so make sure you get to experience it before then! While you're there catching some flakes you might want to stop in and visit the big man in red himself. Yes, Santa is at Dolphin Mall each

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: With These Hands - 12/14/07 04:35 AM
I wrote a post the other day about a segment of our population that is exploited. I was not up on my soapbox then. But I'd like to get up on it now. Look at your own hands. Like mine, I am sure they do not look like the ones depicted in this video. These are the same hands used to caress a loved one's face or tousle the hair of a little one. Picking 32 pounds of tomatoes for 40 cents is backbreaking work. Let's not hide what should be disgust for an industry that allows this behind the notion that these are

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: All I Want For Christmas - 12/11/07 07:21 AM
I see them all the time. Riding their bikes they look like any other boys across America two-wheeling around town. Except they’re not riding for fun. Some are barely past the boy stage. Others left it a long time ago. I’m referring to the farm workers I see all around the Redland riding their bikes to and from work. The other night as I drove west on 200th street I passed two of them, one after the other. It was pitch black and they seemed to come out of nowhere. Of course, they had been there but I just didn’t see

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Redland's Knaus Berry Farm Open For Business - Again! - 12/10/07 06:48 AM
Knaus Berry Farm opened up for the season in the Redland on November 13th. I stopped there that weekend (which, of course, means Saturday since they are closed on Sundays) and it was like they never closed. The place was packed with cars. The line to get a milkshake was enough to make the Dairy Queen down the road green with envy. I have to admit that I didn't bother buying anything. The line was too long and their baked goods are good but I can stop in during the week when it's less busy. Knaus Berry Farm is often, and erroneously, referred to as

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Redland Community Activist Selling Home - 12/10/07 06:18 AM
I was somewhat surprised, and more than a little disappointed to see Pat Wade's home with a For Sale sign outside. And my disappointment did not stem from the fact that she did not list with me. lol No, my disappointment wasn't self-serving. I've seen how hard Pat has worked in the effort to incorporate the Redland. I support Redland incorporation. I hope Pat won't be going too far and will be available for guidance, if needed. My best wishes to Pat and her family in their new endeavours.

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Palmetto Bay Dog Park Finally Opened! - 11/30/07 06:03 AM
After two years of waiting, the doggie park in Palmetto Bay finally opened on Saturday, Nov. 17th. We stopped by in the afternoon and there were quite a few people there with their four-legged friends. It was nice to see that the pooches could run around freely. There's a lake in the center of the park where they can swim if they want to. There's also penned areas for small dogs and large dogs to play in, respectively. This is real nice for the smaller dogs who may not be too keen about having monster big dogs chasing them around the

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Resting In The Redland - 11/12/07 08:19 AM
Sunday was a glorious day in the Redland. The air was crisp with the coming fall (at least for an hour or two it was LOL). The sun was shining. A gentle breeze was blowing. I sat on my porch late afternoon and took a snooze. Well, as much of a snooze as my two cats will let me take. The dogs were busy inside barking as well. It didn’t take a lot of effort on my part to ignore them =) Days like that one make me glad I moved to the Redland. Selling real estate in Miami isn’t terribly

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Robert Is Still In The Redland - 11/07/07 08:17 AM
Living in the Redland I have plenty of fruit trees in my yard. Try as I might, I can’t have all the fruit that’s out there though. We sometimes go elsewhere to get our fruit fix! I drove over to Robert Is Here yesterday afternoon. The kid’s been wanting to try a dragonfruit and we figured they’d have it. We were right. Robert Is Here has been there for about 47 years now. The story goes that when Robert was a boy and trying to sell cucumbers on the corner no one stopped at his stand. Robert’s father decided he needed

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Palmetto Bay Charges Park Usage Fee - 10/10/07 08:50 AM
People are ticked off. They're angry over the resolution passed by Palmetto Bay commissioners charging the public a fee for using Coral Reef Park. The resolution passed last month and parents lost no time letting Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugine Flinn Jr. and the commissioners know how they felt about it. Palmetto Bay now charges organizations that use the park a $15 user fee per member per season. Use of the park used to be free. There are many youth organizations and sports leagues that use Coral Reef Park. One such group is Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading. They're a non-profit group that has used

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Palmetto Bay Stargazing - FREE Every Saturday Night - 10/08/07 08:28 PM
Looking for something fun to do in Palmetto Bay on a Saturday night? Look no more. Not only is this fun, it's also FREE. Sure beats the movies at $9 a pop. The Southern Cross Astronomical Society has been bringing astronomy to us since 1922. They meet each Saturday night at the Bill Sadowski Nature Preserve in Palmetto Bay from 8 - 10PM. Their volunteers do this for fun. We're lucky! I took the kids there this past weekend. We checked the weather and headed out. When we arrived at the park, the gates were open (they're usually locked at this time) so

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Palmetto Bay - Where Exactly Is It? - 10/07/07 09:43 PM
When I moved to South Florida in 2001, what is now known as Palmetto Bay was another section of Miami. While some old timers still refer to it as Perrine, the official mailing address was Miami, Florida. No more. The Village of Palmetto Bay incorporated on September 10, 2002 and is alive and well today. I like visuals and I think most people do too. Here's a map to place yourself. Palmetto Bay is outlined in red. The North border is SW 136th Street (The Falls Shopping Center is directly across US 1 at this point). The South border is SW 184th

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Palmetto Bay- Bill Sadowski Nature Preserve - 10/07/07 07:17 AM
The Bill Sadowski Nature Preserve in Palmetto Bay is the only greenspace of its kind in the area. It has three distinct habitats within its compound: pineland; tropical hardwood hammock; and a drained everglades slough. It is roughly 30 acres in size and is open from sunup to sundown, although if you're driving there, the car gates are open only from 10:00AM - 5:00PM. As you drive into the park you'll notice monkey bars and nice, soft sand for the little ones to the right. Keep driving into the parking area and you'll see the campfire ring with built-in benches. A lot

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Banyan Tree- Palmetto Bay & Beyond - 10/06/07 10:23 AM
When I first moved to South Florida I fell in love with the trees here. The different varieties of palm trees are hard to keep up with. The Royal Poinciana is another favorite. But the Banyan tree captivates me. Banyan trees can be found throughout South Florida. They are quite impressive. If you take a drive on Old Cutler Road starting in Palmetto Bay and heading north to Coral Gables, you'll see many of them. Their canopies can extend clear across the street. But it's their trunks that mesmerize. There's something primitive about them. They always make me look and wonder. I'm

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Village Of Parks - Palmetto Bay - 10/05/07 09:21 PM
Palmetto Bay has earned itself the nickname the Village of Parks. The following parks make up the parks system in Palmetto Bay: Deering Estate at Cutler - 16701 SW 72 Avenue. Follow Old Cutler Road to 168th Street where you'll see signs to this exquisite, unforgettable experience. The rustle of the palms, lapping bay water and songs of the birds will take you back to gentler times in south Florida. And to think people actually lived in this paradise. Not to be missed. Bill Sadowski Nature Preserve - 17555 SW 79 Avenue. Just drive on 176 Street and east of 79th Avenue you'll see the

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Palmetto Bay Village Report - 10/05/07 01:59 PM
The Village of Palmetto Bay is a vibrant community in Miami-Dade County. The village incorporated on September 10, 2002. Prior to it's incorporation Palmetto Bay was known as the Perrine area of Miami. Palmetto Bay is located directly south of Pinecrest. They share SW 136th Street as their common boundary. The village stretches as far south as Eureka Drive (SW 184th Street) and it's East/West boundaries are Biscayne Bay and South Dixie Highway respectively. Palmetto Bay is known as the Village of Parks. While some might think that 7 parks does not a "Village of Parks" make, several of the parks are extraordinary in

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: Shootout Leaves Cop Dead And 3 Others Injured In SW Miami-Dade - 09/13/07 09:26 PM
It took me 2 hours to get home tonight. It usually takes me 40 minutes. I'm not complaining. I know I arrived at home, safe and sound. A Miami-Dade police officer was not so lucky. Officer Jose Somohano was gunned down this morning while on duty on robbery detail. Three other officers were also shot during the same incident. They were hurt but they survived. Supposedly shot by an AK-47. The alleged gunman, Shawn Sherwin Labeet, is still on the run. The manhunt continues. That was the reason for the delay getting home. I got off the Florida Turnpike as usual. A few blocks closer to

palmetto bay redland real estate agents local information: A Death In The Redland - 09/01/07 08:23 PM
He was alive two hours ago. Now grief seems to be all that's left behind. He was an only child. I cannot begin to imagine the pain his parents are going through. Twenty-two years old. He was just a kid. I did not know Lloyd. Now I can't get his sneakers out of my head. When the authorities covered his body, the feet were left out. Why don't they make blankets that are long enough? His feet were visible from where I stood. My sister ran to the scene when she heard. She did not know him either. There was a
