I try my hardest to use REALTOR® correctly. But let's face it. If you use it like the NAR wants you to, you'll hardly ever use it. What most people want is just a simple short word to use instead of real estate agent. I don't think it needs to imply anything other than someone who is a real estate agent. My attempt at a new word would be Realstor, or Realster. Maybe estagent. Maybe Realgent. New words are created every year. Article two of the REALTORS® *code of ethics states that REALTORS® shall avoid exaggeration, misrepresentation, or concealment of pertinent facts relating to the property or the transaction. I'd like to take that thinking a little futher and allow my readers to know exactly what it took for me to earn the designation of REALTOR®. Have you ever told someone you were a REALTOR® ? * If your are a real estate agent and a REALTOR® , shame on you for using the trademark incorrectly. Every so often I have to revisit the NAR's site to refresh myself on the correct usage of the term. Here is a bit from their site. For example, when asked what he does for a living, an unthinking Member may answer incorrectly:"I am a REALTOR®"Obviously, the speaker does not mean that he makes his living as a "member". I attended a presentation put on by a new real estate company that has offices in Atlanta and California. The thing that caught my attention was that a real estate agent could remain with their current company and offer mortgage origination services from them. It's an extra stream of revenue for the agent. Also, when home sales slow down an agent can get a piece of the refi business. It sounds like an interesting concept. Another tool in the tool box.
