Milton, MA Town Election Updates - 04/28/10 10:31 AM
Yesterday was election day in Milton, MA.  In the selectman's race, former school committee member Robert Sweeney defeated incumbent Kathryn Fagan by 32 votes to win a three-year term.  Incumbent Glenn Pavlicek won his third term on the school committee, with business owner Denis Keohane taking the second seat by 45 votes over Margaret Eberhardt. J. Murray Regan finished fourth.  Edward Duffy will keep the planning board seat he has held for a decade. He defeated architect Cheryl Friedman Tougias by 45 votes.  In the closest finish, Justin O'Shea defeated incumbent Eric Issner by 30 votes for the fourth and final constable position.  … (0 comments)

Hingham, MA Approves Additional Meal Tax - 04/28/10 10:26 AM
As some of you know, Hingham, MA yesterday approved an additional tax that will add on a three-quarters of a percentage point to the meal tax.
After much discussion, the tax boost was approved by 37 votes out of 1,059 cast at town meeting.  This promises to bring in some much needed revenue to the town.

Olympia Dukakis Coming to Quincy - 04/27/10 04:55 PM
Olympia Dukakis, a Lowell native, is coming to Quincy to speak about diabetes.  Diabetes is a condition in which a person has a high blood sugar (glucose) level, either because the body doesn't produce enough insulin, or because body cells don't properly respond to the insulin that is produced.
The event will take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25 at the Kennedy Center at 440 East Squantum St. in Quincy.  The event is being presented by the River Bay Club.

Article on Hidden Home Ownership Costs - 04/12/10 05:51 AM
I came across an interesting article on the hidden costs of home ownership.  According to the article, furniture and repairs top the list. But the most important one I believe is the "ongoing maintenance."
I have seen first-hand new homeowners who fail to take this into consideration when budgeting for their first home.  Yes, you have to rake the leaves, mow the lawn, trim the hedges, and clear out the gutters (unless, of course, you live in a development that handles these chores for you).  "To maintain the exterior property, you may have to buy a lawnmower, a hedge trimmer, or … (8 comments)

Chinese Drywall Back In the News - 04/03/10 08:02 AM
Most of us know that homes with Chinese drywall are dangerous because of the corrosive effect of the drywall.
Now the Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that these homes should be gutted.  "We want families to tear it all out and rebuild the interior of their homes, and they need to start this to get their lives started all over again,'' said Inez Tenenbaum, chairwoman of the commission, the federal agency charged with making sure consumer products are safe.
The drywall may have been used in these states: Florida, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana.

Fed Stops Buying Mortgage Backed Securities - 04/01/10 08:06 AM
Yesterday, Wednesday March 31, was the last day the Federal Reserve purchased mortgage-backed securities (the ones that have helped keep mortgage rates down).
Should we be worried? No, says Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors.  The private market for mortgage-backed securities had sufficiently recovered for the Fed program to end without a hiccup:  "Just as the Fed is stepping out, private investors appear to be stepping in," Mr. Yun said.
