Say A Prayer on Canada Day - 06/30/11 02:32 PM
Tomorrow is Canada Day, and I would urge all Canadians to get out there and enjoy their special day. Every city, town and village will have something planned, so I'm sure there will be a variety of activities to enjoy. I'm hoping that the weather will be good in every corner of our great nation so that we can all take advantage of this very important day
Yesterday I had a very big reminder why I shouldn't treat this day casually at all. Canada Day should never be taken for granted, it has come at a great cost to many. Trenton is … (12 comments)

Good Lord, No, Not Another Social Network!! - 06/28/11 03:08 PM
Google is going to take another run at Facebook with yet another Social Network. Orkut and Google Buzz didn't quite meet their expectations I guess. Orkut is quite successful outside of North America, but Google is after the all important American market. Nothing seems to have captured the public's attention like Facebook.
This new service will be called Google+, and is already available to a small number of people. Soon it will be rolled out to the likes of you and me. You can read about this here.
Of course there will be differences between this new network and all other … (76 comments)

Beauty and the Beast - 06/27/11 11:16 AM
It's prom season all over North America, and last night it was my turn to see my daughter go to hers. Sarah was excited about going. It's a reward for enduring 4 years of high school, and I think a lot of kids look forward to it.
Her prom date seemed like a nice enough young fellow, I had met him a few times in the past, and  he passes muster.
The prom is a ritual that symbolises the end of an era for these kids. Sarah is graduating with most of the same kids who she met in her very … (14 comments)

One Incredible Goal - 06/25/11 01:46 PM
Great moments in Canadian soccer don't happen all that often. Once in a blue moon something noteworthy will occur, but they are so rare that I can't remember the last time I noticed something. Canada has developed some good players, but usually they are lured away and end up playing internationally for the country that their grandparents were born in. As a soccer nation, we need to gain some traction and encourage these players to play for the country of their birth. Maybe if we had a few more highlights, this might happen.
Currently Canada is competing in the under 17 World … (10 comments)

Who Knew? I'm Sitting Across From a World Champion. - 06/22/11 07:20 PM
I guess I should pay more attention to my surroundings. I have worked in this office for a few months now and never noticed the picture in the lobby of the Belleville McFarlands.
The Belleville McFarlands are a local senior hockey team, and back in the days when there were only 6 NHL teams they would have been considered one step below the NHL. They still do compete for the Allan Cup, which is Canada's senior hockey championship, but in this day and age of "professional" sports, few people pay much attention to it.
It wasn't always so, The Allan cup … (22 comments)

Stop Being Such Big Babies - 06/20/11 12:35 PM
The weather has warmed up. Tomorrow is the first day of summer, and yes, it can be a little uncomfortable from time to time.
Stop yer moaning and complaining, we worked through a long hard winter to get here. Take your mind back to the middle of February when you were up at 6 am scraping the ice and snow off your car. Remember that? I bet that you would have traded that for a day like this in a heartbeat.
Grumble, grumble, grumble, the weather's never perfect is it? I don't want to hear any more of that, I like … (14 comments)

Father's Day Weekend - 06/17/11 10:59 AM
My daughter has this little sign hanging from her door.  While it may appear to be a little melodramatic, I smile every time I see it. Even though she is 17 and on the verge of finding her own way in the world, I don't think I will ever stop seeing her as my little girl, and I still have very strong memories of her early childhood.
Fathers day is coming this Sunday, and while I'm going to enjoy the attention, the credit should really go to my kids. They both made my job of being a dad very easy. Who … (18 comments)

Fiddleheads - 06/14/11 06:57 PM
A couple of weeks ago I read a blog post written by Chris Smith, a Remax agent in South Simcoe, not terribly far from where I live.
The post was about fiddleheads, a rather odd plant/vegetable. They are actually the furled fronds of a fern that grows in the North Eastern part of North America. They can only be picked for a couple of weeks a year, after that they unfurl, and can actually make people ill if consumed after a certain time. This is the time of year for them.
I had never actually heard of them before reading about them … (9 comments)

Open House Nascar Sundays - 06/12/11 07:00 PM
One of the jobs that real estate agents have to do is to conduct open houses. Sometimes they go well and lots of people show up, sometimes they don't go so well and I will have to sit around waiting for people. I always bring a book. I guess there's worse ways to spend an afternoon than sitting somewhere and reading a good book.
If the television happens to be off when I get there, it remains off, and if it happens to be on, it remains on. The reason is quite simple. There's usually four or five remotes lying on the … (11 comments)

Poor Little Birdie - 06/10/11 05:47 PM
Just another little animal video I thought I'd share.
The other night the skies really opened up around here. We had little water spouts in the lake and trees were being blown over. I hadn't experiened wind like that for quite some time. There was quite a bit of lightning in the sky, and the clouds were swirling very fast and looked as if they may turn into a twister (which is relatively rare in these parts).
I was leaving work fairly late and I noticed this poor little fellow being blown around like a little tumbleweed. He must have been blown out … (13 comments)

Every Real Estate Agent Should Plant a Tree - 06/09/11 07:46 AM
Yesterday was a pretty busy day. I'm getting two deals together and they are both reaching the final stages. There's been quite a bit of back and forth and I'm pretty sure that by the end of the day I'll have them both in the bag. I'm also just starting the paperwork for a third deal which will hopefully be relatively quick, willing buyers, willing sellers and all that jazz. I suppose that this is what being a real estate agent is all about.
One of the things that has really been obvious is the amount of paper on my desk. … (19 comments)

Life Amazes Me - 06/07/11 01:23 PM
Sometimes I will see things that make me think more than they should. I saw this little plant gowing from the deck in front of the office, and rather than thinking why is it always up to me to pull the weeds around here, I started pondering about life in general.
It's truly amazing. We have all seen those pictures of mighty trees growing out of rocks in the desert or on some precarious place on the edge of a cliff. It just goes to show that life prevails in almost any condition. The life force on this planet is so strong that … (10 comments)

More Squirrel tales - 06/05/11 05:43 PM
Yesterday morning was pretty busy and I had a few houses to see before I made it in to work. It was rainy and miserable, and my friendly little squirrel was waiting for me on the planter under the canopy leading to the building's entrance. I think she doesn't like the rain very much and maybe she was hoping I would bring her inside. I don't think anyone in the office would appreciate that.
She had a very sheepish look, and I can sense that she knew she was pushing her luck by waiting so close to the building, but she was … (14 comments)

The Trenton Farmer's Market - 06/04/11 06:52 PM
I suppose that one of the irritating things about being a real estate agent is that it generally means that I have to work while others are having their leisure time. Summer weekends are a typical example of this, and this weekend I'm particularly busy.
I did, however, get to stop by the Trenton Farmer's Market very early this morning. Most vendors were in the process of setting up their stalls. It was a little dark and gloomy, and it looked as if it was going to turn out to be a rainy Saturday. Well it did rain in the morning, … (6 comments)

My Lunch Companion - 06/02/11 01:37 PM
This little cutie likes to come and say hello when she sees me coming to work and leaving. She also likes to sit beside me when I'm sitting on the bench, she's very contemplative. She's just a little baby and I think she lives in a little hollowed out tree on the other side of the parking lot. Our first meeting didn't go so well, she ran up to me and I was a little frightened as I've never seen a squirrel do that before. I shrieked a bit as she started climbing up my leg. I had visions of rabies … (17 comments)
