The last two weekends have been in Gatlinburg, TN and in Virginia respectively.  Most of the color is spotty by now, but driving back through the Winston Salem area from Virginia was still very pretty.  The New River Bicycle Trail had stretches that were covered with yellow leaves, it made you feel you were riding on a trail that only you knew about!  Our cabin we rented on the trail at milepost 20 was delightful, very small, but very nice for two couples.  Kayaking the New River was exhilarating even though we only went through a couple of Class 1 and Class 2 rapids.  We took our 14' kayaks with rudders, and I was glad we used our "skirts" as the nose of the kayak went under water three times in the first and most thrilling of the minifalls.  We were sorry when we spotted our cabin where we had to come back to shore.  Next trip we'll put in and travel about 8 miles on the river.

I have been putting out sugar water and freshening it up two or three times a week for about 6 weeks trying to lure hummingbirds to my feeder. Today I saw the first one cheerfully drinking the sugar water and then for variety getting something out… more
