hokkanen: Combining Traditional Photos with High Dynamic Range Photos - A First Step - 01/28/08 12:55 AM
This is a tutorial to show you how I am combining regular images taken with flashes and high dynamic range images taken with no flashes.  I hope you find it as interesting as I did in learning how to do it.
For those who have looked at my blog recently, you know that I have been testing the waters with high dynamic range photography.  If you don't know about HDR (as it's called), this is where you capture images in RAW mode (with a suitable camera) and typically no flashes used AT ALL.  Then you use software like Photomatix (which is what I use, … (25 comments)

hokkanen: New Listing - Encinitas - Village Creek - 01/21/08 12:25 PM
Here's our newest listing that comes on the MLS later today.  The home is located at 506 Hillock Place, Encinitas.  The neighborhood is a great one - we know it well because we live in the neighborhood (about 400 yards from the home).
How about that kitchen!  Here's the rest of the brochure....
I really liked the photo of the family room...it's very light and bright.  The master bedroom is huge!  The kitchen was both expanded and remodeled.
Call us if you want to get in and see it!

hokkanen: Integrating Photos into Brochures - 12/12/07 01:38 AM
Up until now, I have just tried to focus on what I do to try to take a good picture.  Clean up the room, multiple exposures, retouching, etc.  A lot of effort goes into creating the photographs, but once it is done, then I get to do the really fun stuff - assembling the final brochure.  Most of our photo shoots produce 10-15 final images, so there is usually plenty to use, so you have to pick and choose the best from the worst.
Anyway, rather than just yack on, I thought I would share with you how it all came together … (20 comments)

hokkanen: Street Photos vs. Pole Pics - Side by Side - 12/09/07 11:01 PM
Someone asked me if I had some street photo comparisons of the same homes that we did pole pictures. I did not, but John had to go shoot a video at a new listing today, so I asked him to swing by and get a street picture of a couple of the homes that we sold last year. Here are the results, side by side. We made every effort to size them about the same, and please understand that we couldn't control for cars. But this will give you a pretty good idea of the difference that perspective can make.

hokkanen: Pool Pics by Pole - 12/09/07 03:15 AM
NOTE: If you haven't ever seen a pole system, I recommend taking a look at Lee Jink's artice on the Evolution of His PAP System.   You might also look at my recent article on when to take pole pics and when not to take them.
I love taking pool pictures with our pole camera.  They are some of the most fun pictures to take because the surroundings are usually great and the water and sky makes for great pictures.  So I thought I would just share a few of our pool pole pics! (Say that 3 times really fast.)
The first one is the pool at … (21 comments)

hokkanen: Looking at Field of Views for Different Lenses - 12/09/07 12:57 AM
I know I've referenced my Canon 24mm tilt/shift lens that I put on my 5D back, but I wanted to show in photographs why I like this lens so much.  This lens allows you to DOUBLE your total field of view.  To use it, you shift the lens all the way to the left, snap the picture, then move it to the middle, snap a picture, and move it to the right and take a third.  It requires some fairly minor assembly of the photos, but NO stitching.  I just put the middle picture on top of the other two and … (7 comments)

hokkanen: When to use Pole Photography (PAP) and when not to use it. - 12/09/07 12:38 AM
If this is of interest, you might also like to see some of my Pool Pics by Pole.
Pole photography allows one to create a different kind of image. I've been doing pole shots for a couple of years now, and for those who are interested in this neat area, I have a few suggestions based on experience. Just because you have a tool in the toolbox doesn't mean that you always want to use it. Below are two examples of the actual brochure covers so that you can see the kind of effect that you can get using pole photography. I … (8 comments)

hokkanen: Taking Bathroom Photos to the Next Level - 12/07/07 12:02 AM
This is a continuation of a series that seeks to help agents improve their home photography.  Part one discusses camera backs, Part two discusses the tilt/shift lens used to take the photos in this article.  You do not have to use an expensive camera to implement most of these suggestions--I use the images from from my primary camera/lens only because that's what I use to take my photos, and I prefer to use real-life examples for these articles.  If you like this post, you might also check out the posts on Photographing Kitchens and another on Photographing Family Rooms.

hokkanen: Filming Home Tour Videos - A Review of the Fig Rig - 12/04/07 12:08 AM
We have been making full motion video home tours for about three years.  From the beginning, we decided to do "reality tv" style tours where the camera follows the agent around the home as the agent points out the important features.  This REALLY shows off the home and the real estate agent, and with remote microphones, there are no wires to trip over.   After making four or five of them, I began to get the knack of it, and now we can complete a tour with about an hour or so of video shooting.
The big difficulty with doing this kind of … (6 comments)

hokkanen: Taking Your Home Photography to the Next Level - Part 1 of 3 - 12/02/07 01:48 PM
A NOTE ON COST: If you find that the cost of this sort of equipment is too high to justify today, then try to stack up a couple of listings and rent the equipment. Usually you can get a 7 day rental for the price of 3 days, and that will give you plenty of time to get used to the camera. Then, when at the home, take pictures with the rental and with your current camera and compare the results, and you will immediately understand why I posted this series. Good Luck and Happy Home Photos. We take the photography … (7 comments)
