Tennessee Williams in Key West

In the early twentieth century, Key West hosted a fascinating mix of fishermen, spongers, rumrunners, and cigar manufacturers. Located more than 100 miles from the mainland – and before the overseas highway simplified the trip – it also attracted many artists and writers with its untamed, tropical frontier attitude.

Tennessee Williams was 30 years old when he first came to Key West in 1941. He lived in a boarding house in town until he found and purchased a clapboard Bahamian cottage just outside of town at 1431 Duncan Street. He gradually turned the lot into a compound complete with guest cottage, swimming pool and a small writing studio that he named “the Mad House.”

Life in Key West was not always easy for Williams. One late night in 1979 he was mugged while walking down Duval Street singing a Protestant hymn at the top of his lungs. His house had been robbed and vandalized, and later his gardener was found murdered. During the course of the investigation, police discovered that the man had been systematically stealing outtakes from Williams’ wastebasket. This was especially disturbing for Williams because he considered these to be substandard work, and knowing they had been stolen did little to help his notorious case of writer’s block.

Despite these troubles, Williams loved Key West. In a letter he wrote just a few years before The Glass Menagerie was first staged, Williams referred to Key West as “the real stuff,” and “the most fantastic place that I have been yet in America.” Although he spent a good deal of his time living and travelling through Europe and the US, Williams was embraced as a true Key West resident. When he died in 1983, an alternative cinema on Duval Street screened The Rose Tattoo, a movie based upon his life, non-stop throughout the afternoon and evening.

Much of our history here in Key West revolves around our setting in the Gulf of Mexico, and a good deal of our culture springs from the same source. The sea is part of our daily life – you can hear it, you can see the waves break on sandy beaches, and best of all, you can even taste it!

Historically, sponges were the primary fishing industry here in Key West; we were even considered the sponge capital of the country in the early 1900’s. Then, in 1949, huge beds of pink shrimp were discovered just off the Dry Tortugas, and suddenly the shrimp industry took off. So many shrimp were caught at this time – and so much money was made – that it was called “The Pink Gold Rush.”

Today, island restaurants and markets are stocked with supplies of local Key West pink shrimp, conch, hogfish, yellowtail snapper, grouper, mahi-mahi, wahoo, cobia, stone crab and lobster in season. Many of our traditional dishes have Cuban roots, and spicy conch chowder, chock full of garlic, onions, green peppers, tomatoes and potatoes, is a complete meal in a bowl.

Key West: Best in the US!

Those of us who live here already knew it, but the 2013 Farmer’s Almanac has confirmed that Key West is the best place in the US to spend the winter! Due to our fortunate location, we enjoy a mild, tropical maritime climate that’s just right.

Each year the Farmer’s Almanac selects a list of the top five winter cities in the US. This year’s list was based upon the highest average temperature, humidity levels, dew point, and other factors. The top three choices this year – Key West, San Diego, and Phoenix – are all places with comfortable temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Key West placed first for a number of reasons, but most noticeably because it has no known record of frost, ice, sleet or snow.

Winter residents in Key West can expect average afternoon winter temperatures in the 70s with the thermometer only dipping to a low of 60 at night. From December through April we have lots of sunshine – about 70 percent in December, rising to 83 percent by April – and receive slightly less than 25 percent of Key West's annual rainfall total during this time period. The rain that we do have usually comes in advance of cold fronts in the form of a few heavy showers, or maybe five to eight light showers during a given month. The term “cold front” may be misleading as well, because any cold front that does blow in is modified by the warm Gulf waters flowing underneath it. In fact, our winter temperatures are typically only 15 degrees lower than our summer temperatures.

Three Times the Fun in Key West

While most American cities have their own New Year’s Eve traditions – maybe a parade, or a concert, or a disco ball drop – Key West doesn’t settle for less than three great ways to welcome in the New Year.

The excitement starts on Monday, December 31, when about 200 short-legged dogs and their owners participate in the annual Key West Dachshund Walk! You will not want to miss the fun as these adorable pets parade down Fleming Street between Whitehead and Duval Streets. There is no entry fee, although donations of pet food are requested to benefit the community pet food pantry, run by the St. Mary Star of the Sea Outreach Mission.

The Southernmost Beach Café at the end of Duval Street is offering an open bar and hors d’oeuvres cocktail party from 8:00 until 10:00 p.m., capped off by a fireworks display. Advance reservations are suggested and tickets are $65 per person. Call them at 305-295-6550 for more information.

The city’s midnight celebrations are not limited to a single countdown. Revelers can take their pick of venues to ring in the New Year. Sloppy Joe’s Bar at 201 Duval Street offers its 20th Annual Conch Shell drop. The Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House complex at 724 Duval Street will have a descending 6-foot, red high heel shoe carrying drag queen Sushi. At the Historic Seaport, a pirate wench will descend from the mast of a tall ship to the accompaniment of booming cannon. Additional Seaport attractions are to include live music, dancing and general frivolity at the Schooner Wharf Bar.

Tropical Holidays in Key West

There is nothing quite like a tropical holiday, especially when the rest of the country is shivering in its boots! Here in Key West we make the most of our warm weather during the holiday season, and we keep the party going even as the year winds down.

On Saturday, December 8, the annual Key West Holiday Parade kicks off at Truman Avenue and White Street at 7 p.m. with marching groups as well as floats entered by churches, civic organizations, businesses, neighborhoods and schools. The marchers head down Truman as far as Duval Street, where they turn right to continue on to Eaton Street.

All through the month of December, the Key West “Bight” Before Christmas Holiday Celebration lights up the Key West Bight Marina and Harbor Walk at the Seaport. The Harbor Walk of Lights stretches from the ferry terminal to Green Street and is lit every night through New Year’s Eve. Live holiday music, kids’ games, and a chance to catch up with Santa complete the festivities. The gala, produced by the Key West Bight Preservation Association and the tenants of the Key West Bight, is a gift to the community.

On Saturday, December 15, the lights at the Bight move to the water with the Schooner Wharf Bar 22nd Annual Lighted Boat Parade. Anything that floats – from kayaks to tall ships – will be decked out for the season and paraded around the Seaport and harbor areas. The flotilla can be viewed from bars, restaurants, and resorts in and around the Seaport.

The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition, but here in Key West we have our own spin on it since 2005. From December 19 through 22, producer and artistic director Joyce Stahl offers Nutcracker Key West, with a nationally-cast corps de ballet supplemented with local children, adults, and community leaders, set in the Keys environment. Clara and her Prince encounter snowy egrets on shining salt ponds, a wicked Rooster King, a lovely Sea Star Fairy, and stunning underwater sequences. Key West’s San Carlos Institute

Part of what makes Key West such a fascinating place is its diversity. Along with its identity as a balmy island paradise, the Conch Republic also enjoys a rich Caribbean history. Founded in 1871 by Cuban exiles dedicated to Cuban independence from Spain, the Instituto San Carlos preserves not only the story of their efforts but also the artistic, literary, and musical heritage of Key West.

The San Carlos Institute has weathered many storms. Located in Key West’s historic district at 516 Duval Street, it was destroyed by fire in 1886, flattened by a hurricane in 1919, and condemned to the wrecking ball in the 1970s. It survived all of these setbacks and reopened in 1992 after extensive restoration as a multi-purpose facility housing a museum, a library, an art gallery, a theatre, and a school.

Named after Cuba’s Seminario San Carlos, Key West’s San Carlos is founded firmly on the belief that education is fundamental to independence. The school has embraced children of all backgrounds since its inception, making it one of the South’s first truly integrated schools, with classes taught in both Spanish and English. Today the Institute continues to seek the establishment of a true Cuban republic that respects individual dignity and the right of self-determination.

Prominent Cuban exiles José Dolores Poyo and Juan María Reyes first proposed establishing an organization dedicated to promoting Cuban ideals and cultural values. Cuban tobacco workers made substantial contributions from their modest salaries to support the Institute, and Cuban patriot and poet José Martí addressed a massive gathering at the Institute that eventually coalesced into the Partido Revolucionario Cubano, which planned and organized the War of Independence, freeing Cuba from Spanish rule.

Today the non-profit Instituto presents an array of artistic, musical, and literary events throughout the year to finance operations. It is open to visitors from Friday through Sunday from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. with free admission, and groups are welcome. In addition, the Amigo program welcomes annual tax-deductible donations of $20 to meet its operational costs.

On Saturday, November 10, ValnChz Productions presents the International Latin Arts Festival, ¡Esperando Nacer! It takes place at the San Carlos Institute and features folkloric dance and percussion workshops, artists’ exhibits, tours of the institute, and an exclusive afternoon preview show of the evening’s main event. At 8:00 p.m., a theatrical concert takes place in the San Carlos Theatre Auditorium with guest musicians Rolando Rojas, Andrés Cisneros, Roberto Barton, Dave Parker, Melody Cooper, and Ray West and featured dancers Oscar Caballero and Roxana Garber of Miami's Tango Times Dance Company. The fun continues on Sunday, November 11, with a visit to the Sheriff’s Animal Farm. The Farm is open for visitors every second and fourth Sunday of the month between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. The Farm houses horses, a cow, pigs, goats, bunnies, alligators, tropical birds, a kinkajou, sloths, a lemur, Kramer the emu, tortoises, turtles, snakes and more! Event festivities include the 15th Annual Jersey Boyz Welcome Party on Thursday, November 1 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Conch Republic Seafood Company on Greene Street and the Margaritaville Street Fest, which is open to the public and will be held on Friday, November 2, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Duval and Fleming Streets. There will also be a charity auction on Saturday, November 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Casa Marina ballroom, followed by an all-day beach bash on the West Lawn.

Our warm ocean waters are one of the most treasured natural resources of Key West. There is always something to do on the water in the Keys, and the 32nd Annual Super Boat Key West World Championship will add its own brand of hydro-fun when Super Boat International brings its final event of the 2012 racing season to Key West. This offshore power boat race takes place on a six-mile long rectangular course, part of which dips into Key West Harbor. On some sections of the course, boats can reach speeds of up to 200mph! The fun begins on Sunday, November 4, with race boats on display at the Truman Annex from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and a Boat Parade on Duval Street at 4:00 p.m. Registration, races, and other events continue through Sunday, November 11, and culminate with the awards presentation at the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel for racers and their guests. October Fun in Key West

There are always plenty of exciting things to do year-round in our island paradise of Key West – and October is certainly no exception. Much of the tourist traffic has slowed down, but the island community is ready to party! While the rest of the country starts to button up their winter coats, here in the Conch Republic we are still in our shorts and flip-flops, enjoying the warm, tropical sunshine.

Key West loves a party, and Halloween gives us another great reason to get together. The annual Haunting of Fort Taylor is currently underway! The haunted house, featuring showings of classic black-and-white horror films, is open every weekend (except during the parade on October 27) and on October 30 and 31. Admission is $13 for adults, $10 with a military ID, and children ages 5-12 are $8. Adults-only fun happens on Saturday, October 20, with the Vampire’s Ball costume party in the Salley Port of Fort Zach. Come in costume for a chance to win a prize! The event runs from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. for everyone 18 and older. A cash bar and food concessions are available. Proceeds for the Haunting of Fort Taylor events go toward maintaining and restoring Fort Taylor, an important Key West historical site.

From October 19 to 28, Fantasy Fest will take over the island! Fantasy Fest is one of the largest events of the year in Key West, where venues across the island will host a multitude of fun, Halloween-themed parties and special events. This weekend, check out the family-friendly Bahama Village Goombay Festival street party on Friday and Saturday, October 19 and 20. Enjoy Caribbean food, crafts and music from noon to midnight each day on Duval and Petronia Streets. This event is free! The Fantasy Fest Royal Coronation Ball is Friday night, October 19, at 6:00 p.m. at the "Mayan Empire." Vote for the King and Queen of 2012; donations are suggested to benefit AIDS Help. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, October 20 to 22, the Waterfront Playhouse will present The Battle of Bone Island: The Ultimate Showdown of Good vs. Evil burlesque show, starting at 8:00 p.m. each evening. The fun keeps rolling on Sunday, October 21, with the Sheraton Suites’ Second Annual Blue Pool Party from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Festivities include live music, complimentary hors d'oeuvres, cash bar, free giveaways and raffle prizes. Tickets are $10 and include a complimentary $5 raffle ticket, and proceeds benefit AIDS Help. Additional Fantasy Fest activities from the week of October 22 to 26 include the Pinking of You undergarment-inspired art action at the Westin Key West Resort and Marina, the Reddy Ice Fantasy Facade Competition for festive home and business decorations, the 30th Annual Headdress Ball at the Southernmost Hotel on the Beach, and much more! Festivities will reach a fever pitch by the final weekend of the festival. On Friday, October 26, join the Masquerade March through Old Town, starting at 5:00 p.m. at the Key West Cemetery’s Frances Street entrance. Revelers are welcome to join the madness anywhere along the route; it’s free and open to the public. On Saturday, October 27, the Duval Street Promenade will fill up the entire day – and most of the night – with street entertainment and food and drink galore! The Fantasy Fest Parade will cap off the day with a 7:00 p.m. start and feature floats, marching bands, and dance groups. Fantasy Fest wraps up on Sunday, October 28, with a Children’s Day from noon until 5:00 p.m. at Bayview Park. The kids can enjoy great food, fun games, exciting arts and crafts, and a costume contest. Finally, you will know this year’s festival is over when the “Fat Lady Sings” Tea Dance kicks off at La Te Da from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Duval Street. Admission for this event is $5.

The Key West Maritime Heritage

In Key West, we are fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Key West’s shores have long been an attraction to mariners, contributing to our island’s rich and diverse historical heritage. Anyone interested in naval ships should not miss the Fifty-Third Annual UNITAS Naval Ships Exercise, which continues tomorrow, Wednesday, September 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Our United States and allied Navies will open their ships for free public tours at the Naval Air Station Key West’s Mole Pier on the Truman Waterfront. Group tours are available on Wednesday for up to 25 people. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing, as the tours will lead through several ladders and staircases.

For professionals who have been working to discover and preserve our maritime heritage, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum will sponsor the Second Annual Florida Keys Maritime Heritage Symposium on Saturday, September 22 at the Westin Key West Resort from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Symposium is an opportunity for archaeologists and historians to share research, discoveries, and adventures from Key West and the Florida Keys. All history enthusiasts can visit the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, which is located at 200 Greene Street and open daily to 5:00 p.m. One of its current exhibits showcases treasures from the Spanish Galleons of 1622, including gold bars, jewelry, coins, and important artifacts from the seventeenth century.

Lighthouse enthusiasts will always enjoy the Key West Lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters Museum, located at 938 Whitehead Street. The lighthouse was originally built in 1847 and extended to 86 feet high in 1894. Both the tower and its Keeper’s Quarters have been fully restored and furnished with historical pieces and photographs. Visitors can climb the 88-step circular iron staircase and enjoy breathtaking views of Key West from the lighthouse deck. The museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and admission is $10 or less, or free for Key West Art & Historical Society members.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to participate in an international volunteer effort to clean up all of the world’s coastal areas. Children in Kindergarten through fifth grade will be able to play games and create fun craft projects designed to teach them about the conservation of native birds and their natural habitats in south Florida. The center is located at 35 East Quay Road, with free parking available. There is no better place for a weekend motorcycle ride than the beautiful coastal highway of Florida’s Key West. When you add in some wild party fun, contests with fabulous prizes, and a commitment to community charities, you have the recipe for the perfect island paradise weekend!

Phil Peterson’s 40^th Key West Poker Run festivities kick off on Thursday, September 13^th with the 5^th Annual Bike Week Bar Stroll & Upper Duval Crawl, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Southernmost Beach Café. An event t-shirt and map to participating bars (each offering a free drink) can be purchased for $25. Cowboy Bill’s Saloon will host the Fast Wheels & High Heels event on Friday night at 9:30 p.m., featuring several contests for cash and prizes, including the Biker Babe Sexy Bull Riding Contest.

The Poker Run ride takes place on Friday and Saturday from Miami to Key West, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Peterson’s Harley-Davidson South, 19825 South Dixie Highway, Miami or at Peterson’s Harley-Davidson of Miami, 19400 NW 2^nd Avenue, Miami. Purchase event t-shirts, raffle tickets and other memorabilia at Peterson’s and at stops throughout the ride, including at the Conch Republic Seafood Company at 631 Greene Street, Key West. Participants who draw cards at all five stops are eligible to enter the Furthest Traveled Contest. Duval and Greene Street are closed to traffic for this event, with the Vendor Village on Greene Street offering plenty of motorcycle accessories and apparel for sale throughout the event.

Friday night fun starts at 5:00 p.m. at Schooner Wharf Bar’s Welcome Party and Hog Roast, featuring Schooner’s famous pork barbeque and live music. Saturday’s events include the Rick’s/Durty Harry’s Bike Show at Duval and Greene Streets, with awards offered in 24 classes. A $25 registration fee benefits the Diabetes Research Institute and the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club. The Southernmost Hotel Collection will host the Biker Bash Pool Party at the Pineapple Bar from noon to 4:00 p.m. at 1319 Duval Street, and Sloppy Joe's Bar will host the Biker Bash Beer Garden from noon until 11:00 p.m. with live music, contests and games. The 18th Annual Blessing of the Bikes will be held at Indigenous Park on White Street at 1:00 p.m. Head back to Schooner Wharf Bar Saturday night for their Paradise Tattoo Show and Contest and the Biker Babes burlesque show.

The Poker Run contest’s Texas Hold’Em Grand Finale will be held at 11:00 p.m. Saturday night at Cowboy Bill’s Saloon. Participants with the ten best poker hands will compete to win a brand new Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 Iron or $6,000 in cash! Winners of other contests and the event raffle will also be announced at Cowboy Bill’s. Memorial Day in Key West

The people of Key West love to have fun, and this Memorial Day is no exception! This year, the fun includes one activity that will support our local naval personnel and another that celebrates our island sport fishing heritage.

The First Annual Southernmost Car Show will be held May 26 through 28 at the Naval Air Station in Key West from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The show is free to the public and will take place near the Truman Annex section of the base, in the parking lot of the Key West High School. The FCPOA (First Class Petty Officer Association) will have a barbeque concession stand in the food court available at lunch time. Entertainment includes live music by The Doerfels. Proceeds from entrance fees and concessions benefit the members of our naval forces stationed at the Key West Naval Air Station. The FCPOA hopes to raise enough money to defray all costs of the annual Gala Birthday Celebration Ball, held each year in celebration of the birth of the Navy.

Automobile enthusiasts who would like to enter their car in the show must pre-register with an entrance fee of $40 per vehicle. The entrance fee admits the driver and three guests to the welcome reception and orientation, as well as tours of the Naval Air Station, Coast Guard ship, and any other Navy ship in port, if available. The Doerfels are offering a discount on their CD when purchased through Amazon for all registrants; information is available on the car show registration form.

The 11th Annual Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational will be held May 26. Headquartered at Key West's Historic Seaport, prizes include $13,000 for the highest total combined weight of three dolphin catches, a four-night tropical fishing vacation for four, and much more. One of the many advantages of living in the island paradise of Key West is the ability to explore the rest of the Keys and participate in a wide variety of entertaining activities. Marathon is home to one of the prettiest beaches in the Keys; located two miles off the beaten path of Highway One, it lends itself to a more relaxed, exotic feel – that is, unless you are there for the annual Battle in the Bay Dragon Boat Festival.

If you are a local here in the Keys, you are likely already familiar with the Dragon Boat Festival. This year, the 4th Annual Battle In The Bay Dragon Boat Festival is being held on May 12. This is an action-packed racing event that features the only beach-launch boat race of its kind and takes place along a nearly 400-meter course parallel to Sombrero Beach.

Each year, every dragon boat team is encouraged to gather pledges for their favorite charity; to date, 17 different charities have been recipients of team pledges totaling $40,000.

What you may not know is that this year’s event will include a great new fundraiser featuring pink Solo cups and Toby Keith, in collaboration with the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. Participants can help raise money for this great cause in exchange for the chance to win memorabilia signed by Toby Keith.

In what began as a joke during a toast by the festival’s operations manager has now turned into an awesome fundraiser. Using the hit single “Red Solo Cup” by Toby Keith, the Solo Cup Company has generously provided race organizers with 500 pink Solo cups to be used for this fundraiser. In addition, TKO Artist Management in Nashville, Tennessee has contributed a memorabilia trio to be used as the fundraiser prize.

You can purchase your pink Solo cup for a minimum contribution of $20. The cup will hold a beverage of your choice on the day of the race and also serves as your entry into the contest. The prize includes a greatest hits CD, photo, and pink Solo cup – all signed by Toby Keith.

Simply visit the Cancer Foundation’s booth on race day to purchase your cup. The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys is a nonprofit organization that offers financial assistance to local Florida Keys cancer patients undergoing treatment. Outdoor Recreation in Key West

Mary Immaculate Star of the Sea School’s 2^nd Annual Mariners March 5K Walk/Run and Children’s Fun Run will be held on Saturday, April 28th. The race begins at the school, located at 700 Truman Avenue, at 8:00 a.m. Post-race activities include refreshments, a raffle and awards for each age bracket. Advance entrance fees, available on Active.com, are $20 for adults and $10 for participants under age 18. The half-mile Children’s Fun Run (for ages 9 and under) is free. Sponsorships and volunteers are also needed for the event.

If you love the water, you will not want to miss the final race of the 2012 Schooner Wharf Bar Wrecker's Cup Race Series on Sunday, April 29th. The seven-mile race to Sand Key begins at 1:00 p.m. and is open to five different vessel classes. The race reenacts the historical tradition of Key West when wreckers would race to a disabled ship to rescue the crew and claim the cargo. The entry fee of $30 includes free rum punch and hors d'oeuvres at the Captain's Meeting on Saturday, April 28th, at 7:00 p.m. An awards ceremony and barbeque dinner will follow the race on Sunday. Golfers will love the Key West Chamber of Commerce’s 7^th Annual Tiger in the Woods Golf Tournament, which will be held on Sunday, April 29th, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Enjoy golfing in paradise at the Key West Golf Club on College Road. All skill levels are welcome, and participants can enter as individuals or as a team. Prizes will be awarded on every hole, with special $500 prizes on select holes. Celebrate Easter in Key West

Key West offers special and unique ways to do everything, and Easter is no exception. This year’s events will put a smile on faces young and old, and some even support the environment!

On Saturday, April 7, the Key West Library will hold its annual egg hunt at 1 p.m. in the Children and Young Adults section. Kids up to age 18 can participate, and there will also be candy, face painting, and crafts.

Combining Easter fun and care for nature, the Key West Botanical Garden will hold The Great Egg Hunt on April 7 to kick off this year’s Migration Mania. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include many “bird-themed” activities such as a children’s egg hunt (featuring 7,000 eggs), live bird shows, bird crafts, bird face painting, and a puppet show.

Four different egg hunts, divided by age, will be held throughout the day starting at 10:15, 11:00, 12:30 and 1:15. There is also a bounce house for kids to work off any extra energy they may have left.

If you happen to miss the April 7 event, they will be doing it again on April 14. Admission is free for members and $5 for non-member adults and children. This fun, family-friendly event is a great way to learn about and care for the migrating birds that come to our area.

For a more relaxing time, head to The Gardens Hotel on April 8 for Easter Sunday Jazz in the Garden from 5 to 8 p.m. Lenore Troia will provide an afternoon of great music and entertainment, featuring songs from her new CD. The New York Times List called The Gardens Hotel “The Prettiest Hotel in Key West,” and it makes a perfect setting for this wonderful music.

Key West Art and Architecture

The island paradise of Key West has attracted artists for years; our lush, tropical setting has inspired many famous works. Today, some of our local artists showcase their work in unique historical buildings; this complements the exhibits and creates a unique setting in which to enjoy their work and get a taste of island history.

For one such gallery, the final weekend of February is particularly special. The Key West Art Center will hold its 47th Annual Old Island Days Art Festival on Saturday and Sunday, February 25-26. Over 100 painters, sculptors, photographers, and other fine artists will display their work along Whitehead and Caroline Streets; these blocks will be closed to traffic for the duration of the event. Artistic themes range from contemporary to traditional, with a particular emphasis on tropical subjects. The show was originally conceived as a fundraiser for 301 Front Street building renovations; this historic building was once a grocery store, originally built in the 1850’s, rebuilt after a fire in 1886, and finally restored by the efforts of local artists and businessmen in 1960. It is the current home of the Key West Art Center, a non-profit organization that supports and showcases the work of local artists.

The Audubon House Gallery, located at 205 Whitehead Street, features a collection of art and prints by legendary artist John James Audubon. Adjacent to the gallery is the historic Audubon House Museum and Tropical Gardens. The house was constructed by Key West’s first harbor pilot, Captain John Huling Geiger, in the American Classic Revival architectural style, and a beautiful tropical garden was created on its grounds. This appealed to Audubon during his visit in 1832; he used cuttings from the garden as background themes in many of his works. The building was scheduled for demolition in 1948 but was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, restored, and furnished with antiques. Visitors can tour the home daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

The Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House features the work of several local artists as well as historical exhibits, one showcasing the life of Ernest Hemingway. The Custom House was constructed in 1891 and was home to the local post office, courthouse, and government center until it was abandoned in the 1930’s. The Custom House has undergone a $9 million restoration and now stands as a unique addition to the Key West art gallery community. Located at 281 Front Street, the museum is open daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

For those interested in history, the Civil War Heritage Days event at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park will be fun and exciting. Over 100 re-enactors will provide an inside look at life at Fort Zachary in the 1860’s, including artillery demonstrations, campsite visits, sea battles, land skirmishes, and other performances. The event is free with park admission and runs from February 10-12, 9:00am to 5:00pm daily. The park is located at 601 Howard England Way, at the end of Southard Street on Truman Annex.

Art lovers will enjoy artist Fran Decker’s beautiful Key West scenes. Her work is featured at the “Journey” with Fran Decker event at the Frangipani Gallery, 1102A Duval Street, from February 3-15. Fans can meet the artist at the opening night reception, February 3 from 6:00 to 9:00pm.

The beautiful Curry Mansion Inn will host the 29^th Annual Valentine’s Day Gala benefitting Wesley House Family Services on February 14 from 6:30 to 9:30pm. The event stars Master of Ceremonies Howard Livingston and features music by Raven Cooper and Honey Mouth. I love to talk to people about the fabulous community spirit in Key West. It is easy to be enthusiastic when you live in an island paradise comprised of a diverse mix of people and cultures, all joining together to create one friendly community. An important part of the character of Key West is our collective commitment to helping others.

One Key West organization that has supported that spirit for years is the American Red Cross. Its Key West Chapter was founded in 1917 by Florence Spottswood and has been saving lives in the Florida Keys ever since. This year’s Florence Spottswood Humanitarian of the Year Award Gala will take place on Saturday, February 4 at the Marriott Beachside Resort Key West. All contributions for this evening of fun, food, and music will benefit the lifesaving programs of the Red Cross in the Florida Keys.

On Saturday, February 18, the 200 block of Duval Street will be dedicated to the American Cancer Society’s Rockin’ Away Cancer event from noon to 6:00pm. I hope that you are able to join the party and support this important cause.

For those interested in American history, there are several upcoming events that benefit the Harry S. Truman Little White House museum. The Presidential Families Presentation: First Ladies Speak event will be held on Saturday, February 25 on the lawn of the Little White House. This is a unique presentation by presidential family members as they speak of the First Ladies as mother and grandmother. A fundraising cocktail party hosted by Clifton Truman Daniel will follow the presentation. On the following Monday and Tuesday, February 27 and 28, the Little White House will present Sentimental Journey, The Songs of the Truman Era, a benefit for the museum featuring singer/pianist Bobby Nesbitt and singer Carmen Rodriguez performing songs from the Truman era, 1945-1952. Key West Food and Wine Festival 2012

Key West is the place to be for fabulous food and fun! The final weeks of January are especially exciting as we enjoy the Key West Food and Wine Festival 2012, which will run from January 26 through 29. Several fantastic events are planned for each day, including competitions, wine tasting, and delicious seafood events!

For those interested in wine tasting, the Wine Tasting Seminars with Candela Prol will be held in the evenings at Studios of Key West, 600 White Street. Attendees will learn how to assess various types of wine along with learning the vocabulary of wine tasting. On Thursday, you will not want to miss the Kick off Your Flip-Flops Barefoot Beach Party at the Southernmost Beach Café, 508 South Street. Enjoy a party on the beach featuring fresh island cuisine, Barbancourt rum cake bites, and music provided by DJ Jimmy Jamz. Tickets are $40 at the door and advance tickets can be purchased at Etix.com or at the event’s Hospitality Suite.

If you love gourmet food, you will not want to miss the 18th Annual Master Chef Classic on Sunday, January 29 from 4:00 to 7:00pm. This premier culinary competition and tasting will be held at the Westin Key West Resort & Marina Pier at 245 Front Street. Competition categories include appetizers, entrées and desserts, so those attending will have a fantastic assortment of food to taste! Shrimp lovers will love the Shrimp Boil 2012 at Hogfish Bar & Grill, 6810 Front Street, on Saturday, January 28. Key West Cultural Activities

With our fabulous year-round weather, outdoor activities usually get top billing on local Key West event calendars. However, I never miss a chance to tell everyone about the world-class cultural events on our island. Key West has a wonderful selection of award-winning theatre productions throughout the year, and our local art galleries feature top collections by contemporary artists.

The quaint Red Barn Theatre is located at the rear of 319 Duval Street. Its Forbidden Broadway production runs through January 14 and features satirical spoofs of popular Broadway show tunes, plots, and characters using smart, snappy lyrics and fabulous costumes. This production has been seen in over 200 domestic cities as well as London, Tokyo, Singapore, and Sydney. Red Barn Theatre’s production of the 2010 Tony-award winning play Red will run from January 18 through 28. Red, a portrait of master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and his young assistant, candidly demonstrates the inescapable link between ambition and vulnerability. Tickets range from $30 to $65 per person for each performance and can be purchased on the Red Barn Theatre website.

August: Osage County has just a few shows left before its close January 14 at the Waterfront Playhouse, 312 Wall Street. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize as well as the Tony Award for Best Play, August: Osage County is a hilarious and stinging look at the American family as they gather for an evening reunion filled with secrets and extremely inappropriate behavior. Tickets range from $20 to $50 per person and are available on the Waterfront Playhouse website.

Art lovers can enjoy fabulous exhibits on Duval Street at the Key West Gallery (601 Duval Street) or Wyland Galleries of Key West (623 Duval Street). The Key West Gallery specializes in investment-quality originals, collectible hand-embellished limited editions, and selected bronze work by over fifty internationally published artists. Wyland Galleries of Key West features fine art by Wyland and other well-known contemporary artists. Upcoming events for the Key West Art Center include the 27^th Annual Key West Craft Show on January 28 and 29; the center is located at 301 Front Street and is open daily with free admission.

Key West New Year’s Eve Celebrations

With its lush tropical greenery and warm, fresh ocean air, Key West is the perfect place to welcome the New Year. The people of the Keys know how to throw a party, and Key West offers the ultimate New Year’s Eve experience!

The center of the action is on Duval Street, which is closed to traffic so that tens of thousands of New Year’s Eve revelers can party well into the first morning of 2012. The mild weather here in the Keys means celebrating island style; you can even join the party right off the beach, still wearing your swimsuit and flip-flops!

This year, Sloppy Joe’s Bar will host the 19^th Annual Dropping of the Conch Shell. Stop by early at 201 Duval Street in Key West and join the celebration! Live entertainment starts at noon on December 31 and includes Nick Norman, The Pete and Wayne Show, and the Hyjinx Band. All eyes will be on the rooftop as the clock strikes midnight and the Conch Shell is finally lowered – confetti, streamers and lights fill the night sky! There are no reservations taken for this event and a door charge is in effect for patrons of Sloppy Joe’s.

If your tastes lean more toward the fashion scene, you will not want to miss the World Famous Shoe Drop at the Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House at 724 Duval Street. At the stroke of midnight, world famous drag queen Sushi will descend in her giant high-heeled red shoe! Live entertainment and special guest appearances happen all night. With a VIP Pass, a lucky few will join the VIP party on the balcony for a New Year’s Eve to remember! Balcony tickets are $100 and sell out very quickly; if interested, phone 305-293-9800.

The history buff should not miss the celebration at Key West’s Historic Seaport. Here the New Year’s Eve Madness celebration gives a nod to the seafaring history of our island; midnight on the ship America 2.0 brings the lowering of the pirate wench to a background of cannon fire and cheers from the ship’s pirate crew. Live music and dancing happen all night at Schooner Wharf Bar, 202 Williams Street. There are no reservations required and everyone will feel at home at the “last little piece of Old Key West.”
