Greetings
As a Senior Move Manager, I probably see and work with more hoarders than most people. In fact, if you have never seen a hoarding situation, count yourself lucky; they are unforgettable. The fact is, hoaridng is far more common than you think. About 1% of the population hoards --- that's over 3 million people!
Hoarders are not crazy or lazy, and most see no problem with the way they live. I have worked with young and old hoarders, with rich and poor hoarders. Next Monday (9/22/08) I will be conducting a program on hoarding for the American Society on Aging, in Philadelphia. To register, go to www.asaging.org.
eSMMART, an online training site for move managers, stagers, realtors and anyone interested in working with seniors, offers an inexpensive course on hoarding. (www.esmmart.com).
I haven't figured out how to post photos yet, so I am afraid I can't provide pictures, but please take time to learn about this unusual disorder. Sooner or later, you will encounter hoarders and understanding how they think and why will help you deal with them.
We are working with 5 hoarders right now--it has been an unusual summer. Please feel free to contact me if you are dealing with this type of situation and would like to talk about it.
Regards
Margit
