environment: Earth Hour Photos from South Georgian Bay - 04/02/10 05:00 PM
My favourite photographic contributor is at it again. E.H. Scott, a client of mine who lives atop the Niagara Escarpment to the south of Collingwood, sent these two photos he took on March 27th. The first was taken at 20:53 in the middle of Earth Hour and, the second at 21:45, after Earth Hour had finished. You can clearly see that after Earth Hour, the glow in the sky from Collingwood - Blue Mountain is much greater. According to the president of Collus (our local utility provider), Collingwood's consumption dropped 5.6% compared to 9% last year. This could be due

environment: ecoEnergy Retrofit Program Comes To A Sudden End - 04/01/10 11:05 AM
After allocating an extra $80 million to this popular, energy efficiency retrofit program in the budget on March 4th, the Tory government has suddenly announced yesterday that it has been cancelled without warning. In a media release this morning, Kerri MacDonald from the Collingwood Environment Network said, "With over 85,000 home retrofits conducted since 2007, this proves that homeowners were willing to make the changes necessary to conserve energy and improve energy efficiency of their homes. The announcement of the end of this program is a real setback for the environment and the economy." Over the past several years, The Environment

environment: Ruling Says Wind Farms Affect Property Values - 02/16/10 02:24 PM
Even with the new proposed regulations surrounding their installations, the debate about wind turbines continue to rage in Ontario and certainly here in the Blue Mountain area. A recent column by Bob Aaron in the Toronto Star caught my attention as he described the case of a taxpayer who challenged the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) in September, 2008. (How did we miss that!?) This case set a landmark precedent attaching a dollar value to potential impacts of industrial wind installations on surrounding land owners. A fellow by the name of Paul Thompson of Amaranth Township in the Shelburne area, appealed the

environment: How Would Your Home Score? - 01/23/09 01:15 PM
If you were selling or renting out your property, would you agree to provide the potential buyer or tenant with a report describing the energy efficiency of your property? What would the results of such a report show? In October 2008, the Ontario legislature passed the second reading of Bill 101 known as the Home Energy Rating Act. If approved, this new act will require that owners of detached, semi-detached homes and units in multi-unit, low-rise buildings, who enter into an Agreement of Purchase and Sale on or after January 1, 2011 or into a tenancy agreement on or after January

environment: Is It Lights Out For You? - 01/07/08 05:45 PM
Oh don't worry, I'm REALLY talking about lights. Just lights.Could you commit to turning yours off for just one hour in March? On March 31st, 2007, 2.2 million people and over 2000 businesses in Sydney, Australia turned their lights off for just one hour. That's the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for an hour! Inspired by their collective effort, Earth Hour 2008 is set to go global in just 82 days. Visit the website at http://www.earthhour.org/about to sign up and start spreading the word. Let's push that counter WAY up and let's take a stand. Let's see... 64,360 AR members multiplied

environment: A Real Estate Pioneer To Watch (and Thank) - 11/07/07 07:07 PM
"Ultimate Lifestyle Homes" "Live the good life every day" "Life as it should be!" These are some of the current slogans being used by new homes projects here in our little corner of Ontario. They all try to encapsulate what we love about South Georgian Bay namely, the lifestyle that we are blessed to have thanks to the gifts Mother Nature has given us. But, I wonder... is development the very threat that will take away these gifts or will development find a way to harness and strengthen our bounty? Think of it. We have a beautiful and expansive body of water that not

environment: Is This The Answer to Low Water Levels? - 09/22/07 03:41 PM
When visiting with a client at a cottage in Collingwood on Georgian Bay yesterday, I noted that the waterline was at least 100 feet away from the original break wall. Water levels started to drop in 1999 and since then, some beaches have all but disappeared and real estate purchased ten or more years ago as waterfront, is barely waterfront today. Low water levels persist on the Upper Great Lakes and this is certainly a concern in our area. Not only have people lost traditional beach areas, but navigation, wildlife, fish habitats and water intake systems have all been impacted. Extreme

environment: What is a Green Roof? - 08/13/07 10:00 PM
I'm sure you've noticed that you can barely pick up a paper or magazine without reading about a new green building initiative. Climate change and the environment seem to have shot up to #1 on the national agenda and it's about time. All of a sudden, we're seeing green building go mainstream and that includes municipalities taking a leadership role. Collingwood council recently voted to build the new library to become a LEED® certified building meeting specific goals for environment responsibility and energy efficient design. One of the features being proposed by architect, Henry Wong is to incorporate a green roof on the top
