pine knoll shores: So the cheese moved, now what? - 12/21/11 12:35 PM

So the cheese moved, now what?
I just returned to my office after hearing bad news from my doctor.

I am a runner.  Make that WAS a runner.  At 61 years old I won about 10 gold medals for 5Ks in my age group this year.  I came in number two in the 8K.  I’ve consistently logged approximately 100 miles each month.  Every morning I jump out of bed at about 5:30 a.m. and prepare for my morning run.  I’ve solved many business problems, come up with more wonderful ideas than any other time and place, and forgiven … (55 comments)

pine knoll shores: If the surf roars in the Maritime Forest and there's no-one there to hear, does it still make a noise? - 09/20/10 12:20 PM
If the surf roars in the Maritime Forest and there's no-one there to hear, does it still make a noise?
I am so fortunate to be able to live at the beach.  I live right about the middle of Bogue Banks Island, in Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina.  I live at the beach, in the woods. Most people don't think of the forest as part of the beach.  Here, it is a very big and important part.  Thankfully, when Pine Knoll Shores was being developed by the Theodore Roosevelt family, they were very environmentally aware and set up covenants to … (5 comments)

pine knoll shores: Who says you can never go home again? - 01/16/10 09:53 AM
Who says you can never go home again? Mr. & Mrs. Seller, yes you can.  I know.  It's hard to say you're sorry.  It's hard to admit you were wrong.  I know you hate to call your original REALTOR, the one you really liked but left.
But you can, and perhaps you should. Last year when she told you that you could not get as much for your home as you once could have, you didn't believe her.  You knew she was experienced, honest and good at her job, but other agents told you you could get much more for … (6 comments)

pine knoll shores: Almost wordless Wednesday at the Crystal Coast. - 01/13/10 01:08 PM

Almost wordless Wednesday at the Crystal Coast.
Brightly colored flowers are beautiful but what is more beautiful in the middle of winter than Pampas fronds.  They look so wispy and fragile but majestic.  They're everywhere in my neighborhood including right in front of my house.

Come to the Crystal Coast and walk through Beacon's Reach in Pine Knoll Shores and enjoy the stately plant.

pine knoll shores: Almost speechless Sunday on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina - 12/27/09 04:07 PM
I'm not a bird watcher but pelicans are awesome!
I guess this is the time of year when pelicans fly South for the winter.  This week-end everywhere I went, there were flocks.  My husband and I walked down to the beach on Friday and there were probably about 100 diving for fish.  We stood on the "sittum" mesmerized for the longest time watching them dive.  Then yesterday I was out walking our dog and there were great flocks of them at the Beacon's Reach marina.  Every piling had it's own pelican.  I couldn't believe how close I was able to … (4 comments)

pine knoll shores: Almost Wordless Wednesday on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina. - 12/02/09 08:38 AM
When I took off on my run this morning about 6:30 am here on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, the sun was just beginning to come up.  I had admired the beautiful full (I think) moon to my west but I always start out running due east.  I've been told running toward the morning sun is good for your soul.
It works for me.
About 3 minutes into my run, I had to stop and dig the camera out of my fanny pack in hopes of capturing this scene to share with you.  Awesome!  Have a great day everybody!

pine knoll shores: Not so wordless Wednesday on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina...or froggy porn? - 11/04/09 07:20 AM
Not so wordless Wednesday on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina...or froggy porn?
He's not heavy, he's my brother!
Didn't I tell you to always have your digital camera with you.  I would have hated to miss this shot on my morning walk.
You just never know.

OK, I admit, I have no idea what kind of frogs, what gender...nothing.  Is this a mother carrying her babe?  Is it actually a mating thing?  Is this froggy porn?  I don't know.  But it made me think of love and caring and being helpful, so it's in the eye … (9 comments)

pine knoll shores: Don't leave home without it...Your digital camera, of course - 11/02/09 09:56 AM
You should have your digital camera ready to grab at any given moment.  Shots like this one cannot be 'staged'.  They just suddenly appear and if you're ready you may be able to capture a moment to enjoy and share for years to come.

I should probably stop right here to say that "Yes, I know many of you have one piece of equipment that does multi-tasking to the Nth degree."  My best friend Paula, scoffs at me constantly for my antiquated tools.  But, they work for me.
When I go out for my morning walk or run each … (7 comments)

pine knoll shores: If you love wildlife and peace and quiet and beauty and nature and friendly, happy people, this is where you need to be. - 08/21/09 10:25 AM
Maybe I shouldn't tell you but there's a little known secret just off the coast of North Carolina.  It's a little island called Bogue Banks.  Folks call it the Crystal Coast.  I call it PARADISE.
I took this picture just days ago from the walkway near my house to the beach.  I love the sea grass.  Please don't touch.  From my house this is about a five minute power walk away.

If I walk west, the sound is about a five minute power walk away. How blessed I am to be able to visit both ocean and sound every morning … (3 comments)

pine knoll shores: TAKE A BOY TO WORK! - 05/23/09 06:41 AM
Sometimes I wish I didn't own my own company.  When it's hard to pay the bills, or when it's a holiday and seems like I'm the only one who wants to work, when money is tight and another piece of equipment breaks, oh, how nice if I could just call the boss.  Oh, yeah, that's me.
Most of the time I love owning my own company.  I admit I'm somewhat of a control freak who has a hard time letting others tell me what to do.  And I actually love being in the office where I can get some serious thinking done with … (14 comments)

pine knoll shores: Good-Bye Gloomy Gus! - 05/14/09 03:58 PM
I'm a happy person.  I can find joy in a butterfly in the midst of a pile of garbage.  I have always been able to find the positive in the worst situation and my glass truly is half full at the very worst.
Now, what can we do when we have somebody in our lives who constantly brings us down?  Do you know any of those?  You know, the one who can say "I just met the most fantastic person, secured the best job in the world, have the best health of anyone I know, BUT...(gloom, gloom, gloom)
Come on, Gloomy … (8 comments)
