brookside blog: Brookside (in Kansas City MO) Home Sales Report-March 2020 - 04/13/20 08:39 AM
As I reviewed these stats, I noticed home sales were lagging behind 2019 during the same period.  Normally, April through June is very strong for home purchases--with the pandemic going on, I think we will see a slowdown in the coming weeks.  For now, here's the single family home sales report for Brookside, using the zip code of 64113:

March 2020                                                             March 2019

brookside blog: REMIX-A New Consignment Shop in Brookside - 07/30/19 12:59 PM
Did you know there is a women’s consignment shop in Brookside??  I didn’t!  It’s fairly new, having opened in April.  Remix  is a welcome addition for female shoppers who appreciate a bargain—and want to ‘recyle’ their stylish clothes.

Owner Catherine O’Sullivan moved here from Boston ten years ago.  She has a background in fundraising, having worked for the KC Symphony and UMKC.  But, she says, “I always had the small business bug in me”.  She did a lot of shopping in consignment stores in Boston and decided to open her own shop here.

REMIX  focuses on women’s fashion, ranging in sizes 00 through … (3 comments)

brookside blog: 2018: A Very Good Year for Brookside and Waldo! - 12/31/18 12:58 PM
Welcome to 2019!  I hope you are having a relaxing and healthy holiday season. Since this is the first blog of the year, I'm going to recap some 2018 highlights for the Brookside/Waldo area.  It was a successful twelve months for our neighborhood!

Many new businesses opened, and most of them are locally owned and operated. In the heart of Brookside along 63rd St, Sweet and Simple is a new edible cookie dough treat shop,  and LadyBye offers reasonably priced women’s  clothes and accessories for those interested in classic style.  Brookside Barrio and Brookside Poultry Company are two new popular eateries.    Brookside East … (3 comments)

brookside blog: Check Out the New Wall Mural in Brookside! - 12/02/18 06:29 AM
Have you noticed the new outdoor wall mural in Brookside?? It perfectly reflects the friendly, welcoming spirit of our community.

First Washington Realty, the company that owns the commercial real estate on the north side of 63rd St between Wornall and Brookside Blvd, commissioned the work by Ruthie Ozonoff.  The mural was created is in conjunction with the 100 year anniversary of our neighborhood shops.

Ruthie is from Kansas City and grew up in Brookside.  When she was ten years old, her family moved to Lawrence to be closer to family.  Ruthie went to KU, studying illustration and animation.  She created a few murals … (0 comments)

brookside blog: Kansas City's Sheehan's Irish Imports Closing June 30 - 06/10/18 09:47 AM

After 33 years of serving Kansas City residents, Sheehan's Irish Imports is closing at the end of the month.  It's current location is on the border of Brookside and Waldo, at 410 E Gregory.
Sheehan's Irish Imports is one of those classic, family owned small businesses.  Daughter Katy Sheehan told me her mother Peggy started selling Irish products as a hobby out of her home in 1985. As the business grew, Pryde's offered her a space in the corner of their building in Westport. The next move was to a larger, free standing store at 1412 Westport Road, then a final move … (2 comments)

brookside blog: St Andrew's in Brookside Opens New Community Center - 04/10/18 12:08 PM
If your Brookside/Waldo home has a front porch—you know how relaxing and welcoming the space can be.  For those of us without that amenity, please enjoy the new front porch at HJ’s Youth and Community Center, 6425 Wornall.  The sleek new building joins the campus of St Andrew’s Episcopal Church at Meyer and Wornall.  HJ’s gathering place is open to all area residents, not just members of the church.

Father John Spicer, Rector, at St Andrew’s, has been watching the construction go on the past several months.  He’s so excited about the new space, and eager to show it off to the … (1 comments)

brookside blog: Brookside Farmers' Market Opens for the Season on Saturday 4/14/18 - 03/17/18 01:08 PM

Another sign of Spring!  The Brookside Farmers' Market opens tomorrow, Saturday April 14, 2018 for the season.  Location is the same:  southeast corner of 63rd and Wornall, at Border Star elementary school.

There are many farmers' markets in the metro area; what makes this one a bit different is that all vendors live within 100 miles of the market and the goods they sell are "organic and sustainable".  Besides fresh herbs, vegetables and flowers, there are various meats for sale, baked goods, snacks, and some vegan/gluten free items.  The market accepts KS Vision and MO SNAP forms of payment.  It's helpful if … (2 comments)

brookside blog: Bier Station in Brookside Hosts Fundraiser Saturday 2/10/18 - 02/04/18 10:02 AM
Not only does John Couture of Bier Station run a friendly, neighborhood craft beer bar (with tasty food!)--his establishment is very involved in social issues and non-profit organizations in Kansas City.

This Saturday February 10, 2018 Bier Station (120 E Gregory) is hosting a fundraiser for Youth 4 Change, part of the Restart organization.  ReStart works towards ending homelessness in our area, and Youth 4 Change is dedicated specifically to youth homelessness.  From 2-7pm, proceeds from the sale of Walnut River Beers will be donated to Youth 4 Change.

A silent auction is also scheduled on Saturday, with  gift baskets from Brookside and Waldo businesses.  … (0 comments)

brookside blog: Two New Restaurants Prepare to Open in Brookside - 01/09/18 01:20 PM
Brookside will welcome two new restaurants shortly...Brookside Barrio and Brookside Poultry Company are preparing to open within the next few weeks.  Similar to building a brand new house--one can aim for a firm opening date but usually it's a fluid process, as various vendors and contractors plus new staff have to come together at just the right time before the doors open.   Often a new spot is jammed with curious foodies the first few weeks, so it can be a challenge getting the service and food in sync while everyone is talking about 'the new place to eat' in our neighborhood.  If … (1 comments)

brookside blog: Brookside's Kriskindl Markt Fri and Sat Dec 1-2, 2017 - 11/28/17 12:21 PM
This is the 25th year for the annual Kristkindl Markt at the Country Club Congregational United Church of Christ in Brookside at 205 W 65th St.  Everyone is welcome!

If you've never been to this event--you are in for a good time.  Authentic German food is available for purchase, plus (of course) there is a biergarten!  Local vendors host several craft and gift booths, and the live music and caroling will get you in the holiday spirit. One of the more popular activities is the make-your-own gingerbread house for the little ones, with proceeds going to Operation Breakthrough.

The church is located in … (2 comments)

brookside blog: New Antique Shop in Brookside/Waldo-The Nut Cup - 08/26/17 09:42 AM

Brookside and Waldo are popular places for small business owners...I think this is the third locally owned new business I've written about in the past several weeks.  Today I will introduce you to The Nut Cup, an antique and collectibles shop that opened last month at  7021 Oak, next to Eclectics.

Owner Trish Skidmore has been in the antique and estate sale business for many years.  A friend  approached her about selling the contents of a small two bedroom home in Raytown.  The house was filled with vintage items (signs, toys, knick-knacks, quilts, furniture, etc) from years past.  It was a treasure … (6 comments)

brookside blog: Uniting At Southwest - Proposed New High School in Kansas City - 04/17/17 12:05 PM

You’ve probably seen these yard signs popping up about Uniting at Southwest. What’s going on? A parent-led proposal is underway to reopen the unused Southwest High School as a project-based, public high school with a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) program by 2019.

At one time, Southwest was one of the most well regarded and respected high schools in the Kansas City public school system. The school closed in 2016, and KCPS has no plans to sell or lease it. Uniting at Southwest has the support of hundreds of local residents, former students and prospective SW school families who want … (1 comments)

brookside blog: Natural Juicery in Brookside's Core Shopping District - 01/26/17 10:05 AM

Simple Science Juices opened in Brookside last July…and I just discovered it a month or so ago! I think this spot hosted a custom tee shirt shop many months ago. Natural, organic juice shops are as hot as craft breweries in Kansas City—now our Brookside core has one.

This is the third location for Simple Science Juices; the other two shops are in the Crossroads district and in Overland Park. You may have seen their products sold at the Farmers Markets in Brookside and OP. These cold pressed juices (8 oz and 16 oz) are all created at an Overland Park location, … (2 comments)

brookside blog: Brookside Welcomes Red Door Woodfired Grill - 01/14/17 09:19 AM

It’s finally open…the Red Door Woodfired Grill opened in the old Blue Grotto location on December 29—exact address is 6324 Brookside Plaza, next door to the Brooksider. I haven’t eaten there (yet!) –but did stop by to take a look at the space and menu.

If you’ve been to the Leawood location, you will recognize the menu at the Brookside spot. Specialties include jalapeno dipped fried chicken (served on Thursdays), whiskey soaked prime rib (Sunday’s special), plus meatloaf (owner’s recipe) and wood fired wings (with ancho chili rub, baked, then grilled). McGonigles created a special blend of meat for the burgers ($5 … (1 comments)

brookside blog: JFS Will Open Second Location in Brookside East - 12/31/16 09:50 AM
Welcome to 2017!  It's my first blog post of  the year, and again I'm focusing on the another business opening in Brookside East. This one isn't a restaurant or shop.  It's a non-profit organization: Jewish Family Services, or JFS, is  scheduled to open January 17, 2017 at 425 E 63rd St.

JFS actually started as a support system for immigrants 115 years ago. You may be familiar with their main building at the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park, and they also started Menorah Hospital. They chose Brookside East as a second location to deliver better access to clients who live in this area … (0 comments)

brookside blog: Boutique Shop HAMILTON Opens in Brookside East - 11/16/16 04:38 AM

Another new boutique has opened in Brookside East...just in time for holiday shopping!
Katy Hamilton, owner of Shopgirls at 6245 Brookside Plaza , opened HAMILTON last month at 6215 Oak Street, just south of Season + Square. It's a cozy and welcoming space, perfect for browsing and checking out items you'll want to buy for yourself and others.
The tagline "neighborhood style for all" reflects her products: she features men's and women's clothes from local designers, Charlie Hustle tee shirts, locally made jewelry (including unique necklaces featuring letter charms from the KC Star printing presses), Kansas City skyline socks, candles with surprising scents and other uncommon items. … (0 comments)
