Seems like many have an excuse for not voting - 'my candidate is not winning in the polls, so why bother?', 'no one stands for all the issues that I feel are important, so I'll not vote', 'my vote doesn't really count, the decision is made before I even have a chance to get to the polls!' There's MANY excuses for NOT voting but lets all remember what our ancestors before us did to make voting a RIGHT, not an option or a chore as so many make it today....especially the women's right to vote.
This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; many of them lived just 90 years ago.
Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.
The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.
And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'Obstructing Sidewalk Traffic.'
They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.
They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.
Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' - November 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.
For weeks, the women's only watercame from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.
So, refresh my memory. Some women (and men) won't vote this year because--why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? We have other things to do? It's raining?
With 'early voting' and with the polls open from 7am to 7pm on election day - there is really NO reason NOT to vote. Get out and make YOUR vote count on November 4.
Recently I 'became of age' and am now eligible for Medicare benefits. Nevada also provides a secondary carrier "Senior Dimensions"....my premiums for both of these are less than $100 a month - which is REALLY nice since I was paying almost $400 per month previously. We were unaware until this year that Nevada even offered a 'no charge' supplement to Medicare....it's true, it's FREE (or at least no more than what you are normally charged for Medicare, which is an automatic deduction from your Social Security check). The premium that is paid through your Social Security check to pay the Medicare premium is transferred to the secondary carrier (has to be approved carrier).
My husband has been eligible for Senior Dimensions for EIGHT years and we were unaware that this was even an option. Because he 'missed' the enrollment period (for those already over 65) he is not eligible to be covered by this Senior Dimensions until January. The enrollment period is November and December of each year. IF you turn 65 during the year you can sign up 3 months prior to your birthday, and the insurance goes into effect the first day of the month of your birthday (so does Medicare). Medicare DOES NOT need to be signed up for, you receive your Medicare card approximately three months before your birthday, at least I did. If you do not receive it please contact Medicare.
Prescriptions are also covered, and I refilled all my prescriptions this month @ $3 per prescription (a savings of $50+ per prescription).....I'm now saving about $250 just for these! Eyes are also covered and I've got an eye doctor appointment this afternoon! $20 co-pay for the exam, plus a co-pay on the glasses (will let you know that amount later).
We have found that since my husband has been on Medicare that the premiums go up yearly....but for next year they will NOT be going up. Amazing since everything else is going up at such a quick rate! Here is the article that was printed recently regarding this:
"Medicare premiums will hold steady in 2009 for the vast majority of the 44 million U.S. beneficiaries, the first time since 2000 that rates haven't gone up.
Monthly premiums for about 95 percent of elderly and disabled Medicare recipients will be $96.40 next year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported Friday (*Sept. 20, 2008).
The announcement may seem surprising, given the fact that medical costs continue to outpace inflation. But Medicare officials said many unusual factors contributed to what will be just the sixth year without a premium increase since Medicare began in 1965.
Premiums have risen in recent years - more than 17 percent in 2005 - in part because Medicare had to build up reserves to offset changes made by Congress to adjust physician payments. Those reserves finally have reached adequate levels.
"It was painful to catch up, but now we have one year in which we can get rid of the catch-up amount and use that to offset the premium increases that otherwise would have happened," said Richard Foster, Medicare's chief actuary, estimating that next year's increases would have been about 8.5 percent.
In addition, the government also discovered an accounting error that benefits next year's rates.
From 2005 to 2007, about $9.3 billion in hospice payments mistakenly had been taken out of the portion of Medicare that beneficiaries pay premiums for, which includes outpatient doctor visits, home health services, physician-administered drugs and medical equipment. Those payments should have come out of Medicare's Part A hospital fund and have been repaid this year to the fund supported by premiums, known as Part B."

On Thursday, September 11th, 2008, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this seventh anniversary of one our country's worst tragedies. We do this in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.
In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.
Action Plan:
So, here's all you need to do ..,fly an American flag of any size on 9/11. Americans should fly the flag year-round, but if you don't, then at least make it a priority on this day.
My son-in-law (John) on the left is probably the best thing that ever happened to our daughter. He's an awesome guy and we love him like a son! His biggest fault is he's NOT a McCain follower - in his opinion he doesn't want more of the same as the last eight years. We've had many discussions over this and I will continue to try to sway him....but for now I've got him good with this one. John is in marketing and the other day someone from McCain Potatoes was in his office, so he managed to get his picture taken with these signs.
So John - this blogs for you! Proof that you are a McCain fan!
So, I'm getting ready to go out and went to put my make-up on and there's NONE left! My husband being the awesome guy he is, volunteered to go to the local, nearby 'better' department store and pick me up some. This makeup is not the cheapest in the world .... it's about $40 a bottle (regular price)....I'm all out, I have a gift certificate so it's worth the price and not driving to the outlet mall to pick it up....or so I thought.
He goes to the cosmetic counter and tells the clerk 'I want one just like this'....same brand, same color, same size, etc. Sales clerk goes away for a couple minutes and comes back and says - 'we don't have that shade'....Howard says 'so give me the closest shade you have to it'.....clerk says = 'can't do that, your wife will have to come in so we can match her up correctly!'
Now mind you, I purchased the last bottle of this makeup at the outlet mall for $10-$15 cheaper - there was no 'matching up' I just took in the old bottle and said give me something close to this. They did. I've also ordered the make-up off e-bay (but only when I've got some to last me until the delivery arrives!)
This big "better" department store announced on Friday they are closing down thirteen stores across the country (one is the store my husband went to) because of the ECONOMY.....I'm thinking though it has nothing at all to do with the economy it has to do with the lack of customer service!
I'm not a happy camper, tomorrow I have to go out and get me a bottle (of make-up that is!!)....and guess where it won't be purchased from.
If I told my buyers they couldn't buy a house because they only saw a picture of it on the internet and they did not let me 'match them up' I'd be out of business too - and so would half the other Realtors in the world!
Several years ago I earned a National Association of REALTORS® designation which better qualified me for working with a growing age group in this world - 55+. The Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) classes taught us about the special needs of the senior citizen. Although I'm in this age group it is still good to be taught and know all of the special needs. There's age restricted communities to think about (the pro's and cons of living in one of these communities), proximity to hospitals and doctors offices; when selling do you want to buy something smaller or move into an Assisted Care Facility; and, oh so many other things. I try to constantly keep myself educated on what's going on with seniors and how to help them. About 60 to 75% of my clients are in this age group. If you need a REALTORS® who specializes in seniors then you need to look no further....here I am. You may e-mail here.
I subscribe to many newsletters that help keep me up-to-date on the latest for seniors. One of these newsletters and website is here. I recently received the following e-mail from them that I felt might be of interest to all seniors and senior caregivers,
“In many cultures in the world, elderly people are revered and their advice is sought and respected. In our culture, the wisdom, the knowledge and the social skills of the elderly are often overlooked and instead we focus on the mental and physical deficits of our older generation. . . . Because of this prevailing attitude, older people in our society are generally regarded as less valuable than younger people. . . . It is inevitable that many medical care providers will unconsciously have this same attitude towards their older patients. As a result, if an older person has a medical complaint and the cause is not readily apparent, a medical practitioner is more likely to accept the condition as a consequence of old age. This attitude causes practitioners to focus treatment on making the elderly more comfortable in their old age as opposed to finding a cure. In younger people, if the medical complaint is interfering with normal daily function, typically a more concerted effort will be made to identify and correct the problem." Just outside of the city of Las Vegas is a little known, but becoming more popular, state park. Spring Mountain Ranch is located in the Red Rock Canyon, between west Summerlin and Blue Diamond (off of highway 160). Originally inhabited by the Paiute Indians who were drawn there by the many springs....it touts 520 acres of hiking trails, a visitor center, a group use area, and an outdoor theater
The park is open from 9am to dusk, the visitor center from 10am to 4pm offers tours at noon, 1pm and 2pm, with a 3pm one added on weekends. Entrance costs are nominal. The Theater is $15 inclusive of entrance fee....or $10 if purchased at a group rate beforehand.
TheSuper Summer Theater sponsors performances in the outdoor theater in June, July, and August. The "Theater under the Stars" features musicals and plays for the whole family. We recently had the opportunity to spend an evening in the park with several friends. We packed picnic lunches, toted lawn chairs and blankets, and made ourselves comfy visiting, watching the sunset, and enjoying the musical rendition of '1776'. No sun and a higher elevation (3,800 feet)
made for a much cooler evening than on the 'ground floor' of the valley of Las Vegas.
This afternoon as I left the office around 3pm and sauntered out into the 104°, I was not surprised by the overcast skies, the distant roar of thunder, and an occasional streak of lightening to the southeast.. It's not uncommon for Las Vegas to have monsoon storms during the months of July and August.
The temperature dropped quickly as the storm rolled in (down to 85°). As I drove towards home the rain started to fall, and it came down fast and furiously. The roads flood quickly here in these kinds of rains. 2" of rain in 45 minutes is A LOT of rain. A couple times I pulled into a nearby parking lot and watched the cars, the rain, and the sirens from paramedics, ambulances and police as they whizzed by. It seemed that every corner was either flooded with water or there was an accident, or even an automobile stuck in the depths of the water. I had to make several U turns in order to work my way through the traffic only to take another street and have the same thing happen again. It took me an hour and a half and and half of tank of gas (well almost) in order to go what should of been a 15-20 minute drive.
I LOVE the rain IF I can stay home and not drive in it. It could rain 24/7 for all I care. And Las Vegas desperately needs rain. So for 45 minutes we had our rain....and although I wasn't home I made it home safely and was able to enjoy the weather as it calmed down and got back to normal
