las vegas weather: NV, Las Vegas: The Monsoons Have Arrived - 08/07/08 05:45 PM

This afternoon as I left the office around 3pm and sauntered out into the 104°, I was not surprised by the overcast skies, the distant roar of thunder, and an occasional streak of lightening to the southeast..  It's not uncommon for Las Vegas to have monsoon storms during the months of July and August.
The temperature dropped quickly as the storm rolled in (down to 85°).  As I drove towards home the rain started to fall, and it came down fast and furiously.  The roads flood quickly here in these kinds of rains.  2" of rain in 45 minutes is … (11 comments)

las vegas weather: Who Says Global Warming? - 08/01/08 06:01 PM

Las Vegas has always been noted for it's HIGH temps during the months of June, July, and August.  Normally in July Las Vegas has 115º temps at least twice.
The picture to the left was taken during the summer of 2007 in the middle of July.  The time is 5:30 p.m. Now THAT IS HOT!   But it seems July 2008 was unusual cool....the highest 'official' temperature (normally taken at McCarran Airport) for July 2008 was ONLY 111º.
Will the cooling trend continue for the month of August? We'll see....today, the first day of August, the 'official' high was 108º.  … (12 comments)

las vegas weather: Las Vegas NV: West Nile Virus Hits Again - 09/24/07 09:27 AM
Mosquitoes have been an issue in Nevada for many years. More houses with swimming pools, the many golf courses with man-made lakes, and heavy monsoonal rains add to the problem.  The Southern Nevada Health District has detected West Nile Virus in a cluster of mosquitoes in the county. A 50-year-old man, in southwest Las Vegas was diagnosed with West Nile Virus last month.
The virus is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds.  The Health Department strongly stresses the need for individual protective actions to avoid mosquitoes, including the elimination of standing … (2 comments)

las vegas weather: Las Vegas, NV Weather - 07/08/07 05:10 PM
The time was 5:30 P.M. this evening...the temperature in Las Vegas as you can see from the sign was a sizzling 116°.  According to "The Weather Channel thing on my website the current temperature is 101° and it's 10 P.M....ya gotta LOVE it!  It's DRY heat...enough to shrivel one's bones!
Although it's warm in Las Vegas for a few short months out of the year, you can't beat the rest of the year!  Cool nights, sunny days are the norm 8-9 full months a year.  It is not uncommon to see many a tourist in our 'winter months' wearing shorts and tank tops and right … (9 comments)

las vegas weather: Las Vegas-Monsoon Season - 07/04/07 05:40 PM
It's  HOT - The OFFICIAL temperature in Las Vegas yesterday was 115º mark this week. This makes it hard to believe that Las Vegas is now in the monsoon season - lasting from July to September.  The monsoons are desert thunderstorms, which are known to bring downpours of rain in a short time period. This causes flooding in some areas
Many new flood channels have been built over the last few years but it's not enough. More information on flash flooding can be found at Clark County Regional Flood Control District (ccrfcd.org)
Tips to stay safe:
If you can't see the road in front of you because … (2 comments)

las vegas weather: Summertime and the Living is HOT - 06/19/07 09:50 AM
With the tempatures in Las Vegas already hitting close to the 110 mark it's hard to believe that summer is JUST  a couple days away...summer began earlier this week for Las Vegans when the tempatures hit the 107 mark.
Here are some interesting pieces of trivia  for you:
Furnace Creek in Death Valley CA holds the record for highest recorded temperature ever measured in the U.S. - July 10, 1913 - a sizzling 134 degrees! To beat the desert heat, the ancient Egyptians circulated water through the walls of homes to cool them, and ancient Persians cooled buildings using wind and pools of water. … (1 comments)

las vegas weather: Las Vegas - Last Hurrah Before Summer.... - 06/06/07 03:50 AM
As summer quickly approaches (2 weeks from tomorrow) Las Vegas has already felt a taste of what's to come...the temperatures the last week have broken the 100 degree mark, although just barely...but it's a sign of what's to be this summer.  Yesterday...we started the ‘cool down' that the weather people here often talk about... a high in the mid-90's, but very strong winds helped make it seem a little bit cooler.  This morning I woke up at 7 a.m. to 65 degrees...it's BEAUTIFUL outside...this is what Las Vegas is all about!  Our high today is expected to be in the low … (2 comments)
