architecture: Not so Ordinary Homes - 11/12/08 03:11 PM
Have you ever noticed that in real estate, listings frequently tend to run in streaks? The streak is not the numbers of listings an agent gets. It is more about the type of listings that come in at the same time. Once you list a property that is out of the ordinary, or one which runs more toward the bizarre or different; it's funny how you often get a lot more of them right away. Unexpectedly and all of a sudden you're the neighborhood expert on Dome Homes, Atypical A-Frames, and Yurts. Right now I'm on an Earth-home Extravaganza for the

architecture: The Hatfield or the real McCoy - 11/01/08 06:36 PM
Grandmas Kitchen... was it ahead of the times; or is it just a cycle? Farmhouse sinks are really hot right now. From country kitchens to sophisticated contemporary custom homes; they are turning up in both. Before now I actually had never heard of them, so I am paying attention. Here is a sink in a country home that I have listed; I just fell in love with it. It is in perfect condition, no chips no cracks. It is most definitely at least 80+ years old. These sinks are so named because they were found in rural homes; were extra deep

architecture: Special places - 10/30/08 09:57 PM
Anytime you see a gazebo, thoughts of graceful living from a past Victorian era most likely will come to mind. I have observed that most of the gazebos I have ever seen; no one is ever in them. Wondering what's up with that? I would guess that is because the ones I usually spot are located in very public places. Like in Village Parks, Town Squares and Cemeteries. No surprise, who would want to sit around in those places? We have one at our community golf course and next Saturday, weather permitting; a little wedding ceremony is scheduled there. It's a

architecture: General Motors of Housing - 10/28/08 10:49 PM
Just think... we could have all be car salesman, not Realtors. For those of you who might not know what Lustron Homes are, they were prefabricated porcelain enameled steel houses built in the late 40's. Small, affordable and billed as maintenance free homes, they were going to be the answer to that era's housing shortage. The builder and designer had big plans to sell thousands of these a week. These distinctive small ranches stood out from other housing of the day, as being futuristic for the time. Every inch of the interior was planned out with built-in bookcases, sliding pocket doors,

architecture: Round Barns of Vernon County - 05/10/08 03:48 PM
Vernon County Wisconsin is known for their many historical round barns. I took this photo of one barn located only 1 mile or so outside of Viroqua. If you are interested in a round barn road tour the link to the map will help, as you will find many more of the remaining round barns on the eastern side of Vernon County than the western side. It is believed that the reason round barns were built, is because it was more economical to build one, they used less lumber, and were also believed to be more efficient to run and maintain. Are you searching

architecture: Victorians in Soldiers Grove - 03/25/08 09:01 AM
If you have ever travel through Soldiers Grove, you cannot help but glance over at the old Grand Mansions in Grove. They are along Church Street and along Pine Street. Anyone who has been to this picturesque little river town along the Kickapoo will recognize the Old Oak Inn. It has been an establish bed & breakfast and restaurant-lounge for more than 20 years. Recently another home over on Pine, which appears to be a twin in architecture to the Old Oak building, has been freshly painted and rehabbed into The Roth House, B&B. After a year or so of intense

architecture: Sold: S7793 Aspen Ridge Road DeSoto, WI 54624 - 03/16/08 12:32 PM
Perched & delicately jutting over a hidden hillside... this "Treetop House" echoes artistic living and enjoys glorious and unobstructed, breathtaking natural surroundings plus a full view of the Mighty Mississippi River. The clean modern design of this uniquely contemporary retreat style property is reminiscent of the much-admired Eichler Homes popularized on the west coast in the mid 50's and early 60's. This home's features included straight lines, steep pitched steel shed-roof lines, tongue-and-groove ceiling planks and ample sized glass patio doors giving a sensation of free-flowing space. All of which makes this 1000-square-foot house seem twice the size by extending

architecture: 604 Independence Street Viroqua, WI 54665 - 03/15/08 09:13 AM
From 1908 to 1940 Sears, Roebucks and Co sold homes by mail order, and this home in Viroqua is just one of 447 different house plans that were sold back then. The home is a classic cement block style home with a modified colonial roofline. The full front sun porch leads you into the front door of this home. With hardwood floors and original woodwork this home is certainly going to appeal to an investor or home buyer who would like to do some rehab. SOLD and CLOSED The front has the living room and parlor. There
