farms: Wanta-be Farmers wanted - 12/26/08 04:46 PM
I had an interesting conversation this morning with my client who happens to be Amish. He had recently listed his Vernon County area farm and was moving out of state to Maine. With having a first showing and an interested buyer right out of the gate, it sounded very promising. Amish do not have telephones, they will use them but just don't believe in owning one. Many people ask why; it is not a necessity to own one so they just don't. So, as you would expect, it can be very madding not being able to quickly reach your client when selling their real estate. In these situation,

farms: Not in my backyard - 11/16/08 11:22 AM
Saturday morning, I attended a free film presentation at Vernon Square; our locale cinema donated one of their theater rooms for the event. The film's title was "Keeping the Lights On".This documentary film, which has won several local film awards, presented the events that lead to locally defeating a proposed Coal Ash landfill being located in Vernon County. For more than the past year it has been a hotly debated topic. Many homes in Viroqua and around the county, especially in Harmony Township were the land fill was proposed, had protest signs in their yards, all proclaiming their opposition for the

farms: Old Barns - 11/15/08 10:03 PM
A big old red barn is probably one of the first things most people think of when you imagine a farm. Many barns are being torn down each year because they are no longer serving any purpose for the landowner. When I drive by one and the view is just right, I cannot help pulling over and taking a photo. Perhaps they just no longer satisfy the needs of a modern farmer. Keeping an old barn in good condition and preserving them is the goal of the Wisconsin Historical Preservation Society. Help Save a Barn and a cows home.

farms: The Hatfield or the real McCoy - 11/01/08 06:36 PM
Grandmas Kitchen... was it ahead of the times; or is it just a cycle? Farmhouse sinks are really hot right now. From country kitchens to sophisticated contemporary custom homes; they are turning up in both. Before now I actually had never heard of them, so I am paying attention. Here is a sink in a country home that I have listed; I just fell in love with it. It is in perfect condition, no chips no cracks. It is most definitely at least 80+ years old. These sinks are so named because they were found in rural homes; were extra deep

farms: Autumn Harvest in Viroqua - 10/21/08 05:11 PM
Besides Fall Colors, autumn is harvest time and picturesque images of Amish farms, pumpkins and corn shocks come to mind. Right now, in our rural marketplace the country roads are teeming with farm tractors on the way to work. There are even more in the fields; this morning two of the largest corn pickers I have ever seen passed me by. I was on my way to the post office. The local housing market may be slower, but it is a very good year for growing Corn. Corn Shocks the markets in 2008. One of the largest grain storage bins in

farms: Double Double Exception - 09/28/08 10:47 AM
I had once had this experience. I listed a farm where the owner, prior to me, had this property listed with another broker. The property consisted of 160 acres and a farmhouse. The prior broker was able to sell the farmhouse with part of the land, approximately 50 acres. Try as the other broker did, the balance of the land did not sell before the expiration of their listing. For whatever reason, the seller didn't want to continue with the former broker and did what many sellers sometimes do, found another broker. It had been approximately 5 months since the first

farms: Left Behind - 09/01/08 01:24 PM
Owning a little get-a-way place out in the country, what could be better? Often a picturesque old farmhouse with a babbling brook, located at the end of a lane comes to one's mind. Since buying a farm may be a wonderful daydream for some urban dwellers, it can also be a startling education on what I really didn't expect to learn. Farms come with acreage and outbuildings. Back forty's and outbuildings come with stashes of stored and discarded stuff from other days. These are the places that farmers squirrel away all those old things that just might come in handy someday. When

farms: Showing country Land - 05/11/08 04:41 PM
On Saturday, my last appointment of the day was with an enthusiastic city buyer interested in owning a trout stream property. The plan was to meet up at my office around 2 pm, then head out of town to have a look at the Hornby Hollow property This trout stream is a sleeper of a trout stream and is known to fish well. It is not over fished, off the beaten tract and has some pretty unique stretches of water. Working in a rural market is so great; it could hardly be called working. You basically never know what nature scenes might unfold before

farms: Hey Sweeetie - 03/29/08 07:40 PM
Down on the farm there are always plenty of sweet animals. Some just have personality plus; many are at present, farm stock and future food. As this lovely cow posed for my camera lens, she was especially curious and hopeful that I just might have a bucket of grain. Which brings up a question; do you know were your food comes from? Are you at the least, as curious as this cow about food production? Seems lately that organic farming is now a big business and my marketplace is ground zero for anything organic. In 1987 a small company started up

farms: Rusty Relics - 02/14/08 07:33 PM
When it's time to finally sell off the old family farm place, it's by no means a big surprise to discover piles & piles of old rusty things left behind. Some barns & sheds can turn out to be treasure trove for antique dealers and auctioneers. It can also be a clean up site and headache for the Realtor. I have seen both. One thing I do know is that now-a-days not too many city buyers are willing to inherit this debris and remaining rusting junk. They want it "Broom Clean". A vague terms we Realtors use that should leave no
