A Great Place... That is what I think of living in Viroqua. Now even Mother Earth Newsthinks so too! Our town has made the third annual list of the "9 great place you never hard of." I know the vast majority out there have never heard of Viroqua, WI. For sure, I also know they usually can't pronounce it.  Since the article I have had 3 appointments from people who have read the magazine and would like to come out this way to investigate living here.
Some of the special things that make living in Viroqua interesting is our city is commitment to … (4 comments)

my marketplace: Stoddard, Wiscosnin - 08/02/08 02:55 PM
If you enjoy the great outdoors, then you are going to have a great time if you get a chance to come and visit Stoddard, Wisconsin. It is located right along the edge of the Mississippi River only 10 miles south of LaCrosse, WI.  From this little village, with a population of only 815, you can look clear across the river at one of its widest places and see Iowa's wooded bluffs.  The area offers up some excellent boating, hunting and fishing. No matter which season, there is always something going on that centers around activities out on the river. In … (2 comments)

my marketplace: Hillsboro, WI - 06/08/08 10:58 AM
At the far eastern end of Vernon County is the location of the 3rd largest city in Vernon County, the City of Hillsboro. It has a history that dates back to 1850. The areas earliest industries were lumber, farming and cheese making. Most of the early residents were Czech and German immigrates and settled the area to find a better way of life. Today the population is around 1302 and it still primarily a farming community.  The city takes pride in calling themselves the Czech capital of Wisconsin.  Each second weekend in June, Hillsboro hosts a festival, Chesky Den, to celebrate … (3 comments)

my marketplace: Ontario, WI - 06/04/08 07:35 AM
It's possible you haven't heard of the small village of Ontario Wisconsin, population 475. If so, it is an outdoor recreational heaven and the destination for canoeing enthusiasts. Thousands flock here each summer to enjoy an outing on the meandering Kickapoo River. Bring their own canoes and kayaks or renting them from the outfitters, it is an everyday site, during the summer season to see old school buses shuttling dozens of happy, singing, canoeist customers back to town after a day of paddling down the stream.  The town has an old frontier-like flavor about it; horse lovers will also be in … (0 comments)

my marketplace: La Farge, Wisconsin - 05/07/08 06:14 PM
One of the smaller scenic river towns, which I know quite well, is the Village of La Farge. This quaint little town has a population of approximately 775 people and was incorporated in 1899. Originally named Seeleyburg, the village had its business area located along Plum Run Road. That road name was changed a few years ago to Seeleyburg Road, in memory of the past town's location.  Since the location along the banks of the Kickapoo River was prone to numerous floods, it necessitated a move up to higher ground. So with the move the town name was also changed to La … (4 comments)

DeSoto Wisconsin is a picturesque rural Village located right on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town's population numbers about 366, and is centered between the counties of Vernon and Crawford. Rich with heritage and history, this village can trace its history back to the time of the Black Hawk Indian war. my marketplace: Westby Wisconsin - 04/06/08 09:54 AM
Westby Wisconsin is the second largest city in Vernon County. The population is approximately 2150. The scenic city is located in the coulee region in southwestern part of our state. Evidently the town was named after a Union Soldiers by the name of Ole T. Westby. He immigrated to the area from Norway and opened a general store in the area. Later the town was named after him.
To this day, the city is immensely proud of their Scandinavian heritage, and proudly demonstrates that by hosting several annual festivals each year. In May a Syttende Mia parade to celebrate the past heritage … (2 comments)

my marketplace: Victorians in Soldiers Grove - 03/25/08 09:01 AM
If you have ever travel through Soldiers Grove, you cannot help but glance over at the old Grand Mansions in Grove. They are along Church Street and along Pine Street. Anyone who has been to this picturesque little river town along the Kickapoo will recognize the Old Oak Inn. It has been an establish bed & breakfast and restaurant-lounge for more than 20 years. Recently another home over on Pine, which appears to be a twin in architecture to the Old Oak building, has been freshly painted and rehabbed into The Roth House, B&B. After a year or so of intense … (0 comments)

my marketplace: Viola Wisconsin - 03/23/08 09:03 AM
Viola Wisconsin is a small quiet town located right on the county line. It proudly has ½ of the Village in Richland County and the other ½ in Vernon County. It would be interesting to know some of the fact and history as to how and why the Village developed this way. It just seems like this could cause some problems and extra expenses to keep it all-straight.
Viola is well known for an annual event that has over 78 years of history; it's the Horse & Colt show.  This event features old time country fair with truck pulls, horse pulls, … (0 comments)

my marketplace: Viroqua - 04/30/07 09:04 AM
Viroqua is located in the southwestern portion of our state; it is also the county seat of Vernon County Wisconsin. There are several versions of how Viroqua got its name, of which none are entirely certain.  The most romantic of these stories is that Viroqua was named after a Blackhawk Indian maiden; supposedly she leaped to death over a tragic lost love. A large rock outcropping within the city park, which is not far from the county court house, is reputedly the site of her demise. The city has a population of approximately 4400 and the county population is around 28,000.  … (0 comments)
