Haiku Maui Hawaii - it's a great place to grow things. We are blessed with an almost perfect climate here in Haiku - and this spring has been one of those years when we get early morning showers to keep everything green and fresh. It was good timing for a veggie garden, so hubby got the tractor out and made me a nice spot right close to the house this time. Let's see, what do I have growing now.... lettuce, mesclun, cilantro, basil, dill, Vietnamese coriander, lemongrass, marigolds, cosmos, pole beans, brocolli, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, habanero peppers, more kinds of hot peppers, kawelo tomatoes, cucumbers, and sugar peas. And a whole 'nother garden with just corn - which the birds are already enjoying (the sprouts)!
It's all organic, with complehumus fertilizer, bone meal, dolomite lime, chicken manure, composted wood chips with horse manure, and green sand.
The trick is to remember to plant successive crops, every month. Once you start harvesting and eating, it's easy to forget starting some more rows. It takes a lot of space to have multiple garden areas. We are lucky to have lots of space, so no excuses anymore. There are plenty of pepper and tomato starts that I need to get in the ground now... these will produce for months. In fact some of the pepper plants will keep going for years. The Hawaiian chili pepper is a small red pepper that grows prolifically, and it's fiery hot. Good for making chili-pepper water, a local seasoning.
So this is where you'll find me every morning - tending the garden before it gets too hot. Then it's on with the Realtor Hat - get out there and show some properties, and make some offers. If you're looking for a place on Maui where you can have your own garden, please give me a call. I'm here to help you find that perfect Maui home. If you have questions about home ownership on Maui, just contact me by phone or email. Moving to Maui? .... see the HAIKU relocation package

May 5 - it's Boy's Day here on Maui - that's when you see the koi flags (koi nobori) flying in people's yard to signify how many boys they have. The largest carp at the top represents the eldest son, while the smallest at the bottom represents the youngest boy. Koi or carp banners are placed on a high bamboo pole in front of the house to symbolizes strength, perseverance, and long life. It's a tradition that comes from Japan, and has rooted here in Hawaii.

I got these pictures one day while up in Kula Maui - two trucks stopped at Morihara Store and I grabbed my camera and took a bunch of pictures. It was a weekend - that's when a lot of the local pig hunters take their dogs out in the country to "bring home the bacon". These dogs look tired - it's not easy to run down a large boar like this, and hold it until the boys come with their guns. Check out the tusks!
Conservation efforts are underway to remove a large part of the pig population in Maui County. Read what the Nature Conservancy has to say about this. On Maui you can find wild and feral pigs in most of the countryside - and especially up in the forests. They are BAD NEWS on the ecosystem, with their rooting and foraging which disturbs the ground and native plants. Don't cry for this little piggie. Locals are doing a good thing by reducing the pig population, and "living off the land". The truly wild pigs are all black like this. The males have the big tusks, which make nice trophies. Feral pigs are those which have resulted from cross breeding wild pigs with domestic pigs, and they come in all colors including white and red, and spotted. I think the meat is a little tastier than the purely wild ones.
The dogs are crucial for pig hunting here. A good pig dog is very important. The dogs get the scent of a pig and chase it, sometimes for miles. When they get it cornered, one or 2 dogs will grab onto the ears and hold on. Another dog will bark and bark so the hunters can find them. It's a risky business for the mutts, but they love the action. Some dogs get seriously hurt and some get killed by the mean old boars. Those tusks can be sharp! These hunters were showing off their catches, by strapping them onto the trucks. Some guys like to strap them to the hood and drive home... I don't get it. It's a lot easier to just dress the kill on the spot and pack the quarters out... leave all the "junk" behind in the forest. But that doesn't impress the chicks I guess! Aloha from Maui - Georgina M. Kaheawa Wind Power - is a 30 MegaWatt wind farm located in the West Maui Mountains high above Maui's scenic shores, and very visible from the resort areas of Maalaea, Kihei and Wailea. They are owned and operated by UPC Hawaii Wind Partners, a Massachusetts-based wind farm company. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have agreed to join forces with UPC Hawaii Wind Partners to study the integration of wind technology into the Hawai'i utility system. This is the first such partner site for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's wind technology program outside of its base in Colorado. We are lucky to have this opportunity on Maui.
Taken from a beach in North Kihei, this picture shows the 20 wind turbines on the ridge above the strip of Maalaea Bay condos at the shore. We have strong tradewinds on Maui, and they get funneled through the central valley, picking up speed. The location of the wind farm takes advantage of these accelerated winds. About 10% of our energy needs is currently being met with the power produced here at Kaheawa Wind Farm. This translates to saving the island of Maui 600 barrels of oil per day.... and that's what the alternative is... diesel generating plants! Since Maui is such a great place to embrace with power, many homeowners are taking advantage of this sustainable and free resource. What about you? Will windpower work for you?
