With all the hoopla about the national park service marking its 100 year anniversary, it's only appropriate to post some pictures of our best known Haleakala National Park here on Maui. It's a highlight of anyone's visit to the island, and I would encourage you all to take a drive up there since it's so easy to do. Where else on this earth can you get in your car at sea level and drive up to a 10,000 summit in about 45 minutes? On a beautiful paved road all the way no less!

Video of 2 nene geese in Haleakala Crater on Maui The nene geese in Haleakala National Park are so tame that I got some pretty good footage of them when hiking through the crater last month. These 2 were just hanging out at the cabin hoping for a handout, but the rules say NO feeding the geese. The nene goose is endemic to Hawaii and is only found on Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. They are endangered and need to be protected. Can you tell that they have evolved from the Canada Goose? The markings are quite similar.

Going camping on Maui - the wilderness cabins in Haleakala crater Maui is not really geared to the camping and backpacking crowd, like some other parts of the world, but there are a few places where you're welcome to camp. One of those places is inside the crater up at Haleakala National Park. That's the very top of the mountain over here! The park has 3 wilderness cabins which can be reserved in advance: Holua; Paliku; and Kapalaoa. Each one has it's own unique location and they are well separated, and can only be reached by footpath. The dominant geological feature of East Maui is the dormant volcano known as Haleakala, rising over 10,000 ft above sea level. Weather at the summit is ever changing and unpredictable. High winds are not uncommon at this elevation. Winter or summer, you are as likely to experience rain as sun, and temperatures can be in the 60's... or below zero. Sometimes on the same day! Snow tops Haleakala Mountain on Maui We got some snow on Maui! And it stayed more than one day this time. On average, we get snow on Maui about every 5 years or so. This time it was quite a lot of snow coverage, much more than the usual dusting. This great shot is by Kevin Ditamore, taken from upcountry Kula Maui. The Maui News reports that the road to the 10,000 ft summit of Haleakala was closed above the 7,000 foot elevation before dawn Monday due to unsafe driving conditions... high winds and ice.
