makawao: Upcountry Realtor Caravan on Maui, Hawaii - Makawao/Pukalani/Olinda - 03/22/08 04:26 AM

Maui Upcountry Realtor Caravan
Here on Maui we have Realtor Caravans every week.  On Thursdays we cover the north shore and upcountry areas.  I blogged about the Haiku Caravan previously, which happens on the 2nd Thursday each month.
Fidelity National Title & Escrow of Hawaii graciously provide this valuable service for us, and coordinate the event.  We meet at Casanova's Restaurant in Makawao at 8:30 in the morning.  They give us a hand-out with the list of new upcountry properties to see, with a map on the back to help find our way to all of these new listings.
Yesterday on Makawao/Pukalani Caravan there … (5 comments)

makawao: Hui No'eau Visual Art Center - Makawao Maui Hawaii - 12/05/07 04:11 AM

This is the Hui No'eau, or "the Hui" as it's known to the local community.  When you approach from the long driveway off Baldwin Avenue, this is the first building you come to - it's the former home of this Kaluanui estate.  Now it offers space for classes, lectures, exhibits, studios, a gift shop and administrative offices.  Future expansion will provide adequate classrooms and new studios for a growing community
Yesterday I blogged about the annual Holiday Fair which was held on Dec. 1st this year.  It has become a tradition on Maui to attend the craft sale for some unique gifts … (2 comments)

makawao: Hanzawa Store - Kaupakalua Road - Haiku Maui Hawaii - 12/02/07 04:23 AM

When you're driving around Maui, in Haiku, you'll sooner or later find yourself driving the twisting mountain spine of Kaupakalua Road, the main artery between the upcountry town of Makawao, and the Hana Highway starting point of the historic Millenium Trail.  Going up or down, there aren't many pit stops along the way, and it's really great to come across Hanzawa's, an old fashioned country store.
Hanzawa's Store serves a large community of people in the countryside, from Haiku to Makawao.  It's the only gas station and store for miles around.  Is it any wonder they do a thriving business, selling gas, hot dogs and cold drinks, beer, … (4 comments)

makawao: Hit and Run Drive-By Shooting on Maui - 11/21/07 09:00 PM

Random MAUI Scenes taken from the car while driving
Okay I admit it's a dramatic title, but this is just a quick post with some drive-by pictures of some Maui scenes.  I always hate to take pics out the car window, but sometimes you get lucky and they're not too bad.  That's a view of the ocean close to Mama's Fish House.
Makawao Town in upcountry Maui has some great old buildings.  And of course, there's always those beautiful rainbows over the sugar cane fields while driving into Paia on the north shore.

Don't worry, I wasn't driving.  Have a great Thanksgiving!  I … (8 comments)

makawao: Fixer with a View - Haliimaile Maui - 10/05/07 06:51 PM
Even in today's market there are still some really good fixer-uppers out there.  I saw one recently that would make an excellent project for the hands-on home buyer who has to have an ocean view.
The quiet town of Haliimaile, on the slopes of Haleakala, is basically a "company town".  Maui Land and Pineapple Company (MLP) base their pineapple farming operations here.  Back when the sugar and pineapple plantations ruled this island, the companies would build worker housing, known as camps.  Haliimaile has a lot of those camp homes still standing, though most have seen better days.  When a Haliimaile house comes … (1 comments)
