It's gardenia season on Maui - spring is in the air.
I love this time of year when the gardenias are blooming and their lovely fragrance fills the air!  We moved to Hawaii in the spring and I remember how wonderful it was to be surrounded with their heady scent.  Now it always reminds me of our first days of living here on this "best island in the world".

It's been 38 years now since we called Maui home and I think it was the best move we ever made.

spring: A cozy starter home for little chickens in Haiku Maui - 10/07/17 05:16 PM
These new chicks will be laying eggs in the spring in Haiku Maui.  We're not waiting until spring to get some new chicks, we're getting them started now so we'll have eggs in time for Easter 2018.  It takes about 6 months before they start to lay.  These are White Rocks and Ameraucanas, and there are many more types of egg laying breeds.

Somebody in Waikapu had ordered day old chicks and had a lot extra, so my husband picked up 8 about a week ago.  He built them a nice outdoor cage with wheels on … (19 comments)

spring: Spring flowers on Maui - ti leaf blossoms - 03/16/17 08:52 PM
Spring flowers on Maui - Yes we do have seasons in Hawaii, and you notice different trees and flowers that bloom at different times of the year.  You may not have heard of ti (pronounced tea) leaves, but they are common and almost every yard will have them.  The leaves grow all year and have many uses in the home and kitchen.  Wrap food in them for cooking, or serve food on them as makeshift paper plates.

Hawaiians considered them good luck and would plant them in every corner of the yard.  You can't really … (11 comments)

spring: Have you ever seen a Maypole dance? Haiku Maui has one. - 05/05/15 02:05 PM
Have you ever seen a Maypole dance? Haiku Maui has one.
We were lucky to be invited to a neighbor's Mayday celebration over the weekend, where they had their 10th annual Maypole dance on a beautiful sunny day in Haiku Maui.

They had a huge pole of bamboo placed into a hole in the yard, with many colorful ribbons attached at the top. Each participant holds a ribbon as they dance around the pole in 2 directions, weaving in and out of each other. An array of hand drummers beat out the time during the process which took well over … (9 comments)

Happy Easter from Haiku Maui - painted goose eggs
Back when we used to have a few geese I would collect the eggs and blow them out for painting. These are some of the results.

We no longer have geese, since having Jack Russell Terriers doesn't make it very easy to have free range poultry. Now I have to settle for chicken eggs... but haven't gotten around to painting any this year.
I hope you have a Happy Easter and spring!

You can raise geese and chickens in Haiku Maui and make your own Easter eggs!

Silent Saturday - Think pink for spring flowers

Spring forward this weekend if you live on the mainland. Here in Hawaii we stay on the same time zone all year round, and we can enjoy these bright colorful flowers all year round too.
Find a home in Haiku Maui and grow beautiful flowers like these.
Spring is just around the corner!
